Start by identifying the exact Resident Evil game and PC release: Capcom’s fixes are title-specific, and advice for the original Resident Evil 4 does not necessarily apply to the 2023 remake. Check that game’s PC requirements, make sure it is using the right graphics card, and then troubleshoot settings, competing apps, files, and crashes in that order. Steam’s performance figures are estimates, not guarantees of a steady frame rate in every scene.
Why is Resident Evil running slowly on my PC?
“Resident Evil” spans multiple PC releases, so first note the game and edition, where you own it (such as Steam), and your Windows version. Lower settings that strain graphics memory
Change one or two settings at a time, then test the same area or activity so you can tell whether the change helped. For Resident Evil 2, Steam specifically advises lowering texture quality, shadow quality, or resolution if the selected graphics settings exceed available graphics memory. Reducing resolution can improve performance, but it also makes the image less sharp; lowering textures or shadows may preserve resolution with a different visual trade-off.

Steam lists the following expected performance figures in the requirements for these games. They are publisher/store estimates, not independently measured benchmarks or promises of constant frame rate. The newer-title listings warn that frame rate may drop in graphics-intensive scenes.

These figures describe different games and settings and should not be treated as directly comparable tests. In particular, a listed frame rate does not establish how a specific PC will perform at a different resolution, with ray tracing enabled, or in a demanding scene.

Check which GPU the game is using
On a laptop with integrated and dedicated graphics, confirm that the game is assigned to the high-performance GPU. The available controls differ by system, so follow the directions in the guide for your game and laptop rather than assuming one universal Windows or graphics-driver menu. Close resource-heavy apps while testing
Temporarily close video recording software, performance overlays, and other resource-intensive applications, then see whether the symptom changes. Capcom’s general Steam troubleshooting page warns that apps using system resources can affect performance and stability; its Resident Evil 4 (2023) guide specifically notes possible CPU, GPU, memory, and I/O load. This is a diagnostic step, not evidence that any particular background app is necessarily the cause.

Restore title-specific defaults or investigate shader cache
If frame rate became unstable after changing settings, Resident Evil 4 (2023)’s Capcom guide includes restoring the game’s default configuration as a troubleshooting option. Follow the instructions for that release and preserve or back up configuration files before changing them.
For Steam games, Capcom’s general guide also identifies game-generated shader.cache and shader.cache2 files as possible items to delete when investigating damaged shader-cache data. Use the guide’s title-relevant directions, and do not treat cache deletion as a guaranteed stutter fix. The game may need time to rebuild shader data after it is removed.

What should I do if the game will not launch or keeps crashing?
- Update Windows and your graphics driver. Use the normal update route for your PC and graphics hardware, then restart and retest. Capcom includes update checks among its general troubleshooting steps.
- Verify the Steam installation. For Resident Evil 4 (2023), Capcom describes using Steam’s file-verification feature to check for missing or damaged game files. Follow the instructions in the game-specific guide; do not delete or replace unrelated files.
- Check security software only when relevant. Capcom’s game-specific guides include security-software troubleshooting. If a trusted game file is being blocked, consider a narrowly scoped exclusion for that file or folder only after confirming it is legitimate. Do not disable antivirus or other protections broadly.
- Capture useful crash details. Record the location, action, and steps that reliably trigger the crash. If the game creates a CrashReport folder, keep the report identified by the relevant Capcom guide before contacting support.
If the failure continues, use the support page for the exact game and release. A fix written for one title or storefront may not match another PC edition.
Does advice for the original Resident Evil 4 apply to the 2023 remake?
No. Capcom says the original Resident Evil 4 PC release is hard-coded to run at 30 or 60 frames per second and identifies 60 Hz display compatibility as a possible issue in that release’s troubleshooting information. That limitation is specific to the older PC version; do not apply it to Resident Evil 4 (2023), which has its own requirements and troubleshooting guidance. Should I upgrade my PC or keep lowering settings?
Compare the specific game’s minimum and recommended requirements with your current GPU and graphics memory, then factor in the resolution, frame rate, texture and shadow quality, and ray tracing settings you want. If lowering settings makes performance acceptable, an upgrade may not be necessary. If the system falls short of the relevant requirements or cannot meet your target settings, a hardware upgrade is one possible response—but these requirements alone do not identify a universally suitable graphics card or guarantee a particular performance gain. Treat Steam’s numbers as estimates, especially for graphics-intensive scenes.
Check the game’s current store requirements and Capcom support guidance before changing hardware or troubleshooting files. Requirements and fixes can change with game patches, drivers, and operating-system updates.
