If Company of Heroes 3 crashes, freezes, will not launch, or opens to a black screen, start with the reversible checks: verify the Steam installation, update Windows and your graphics drivers, compare your PC with Relic’s minimum requirements, and temporarily disable mods. Reinstalling or changing local game files comes later—and back up your saves before clearing the “My Games” folder.
Start by identifying when the problem happens
Note whether the failure occurs before the main menu, during a cinematic, or only in a campaign or match. That distinction can help narrow down the next check, but it does not by itself identify a cause. Relic’s troubleshooting guidance covers launch failures, crashes, and blank screens; the steps below put its lower-risk checks before reinstalling or changing local files.

Try these checks before reinstalling

Verify the Steam game files
In Steam, open your Library, right-click Company of Heroes 3, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files. Let Steam finish, then try launching the game again. Relic recommends this for launch failures: Game Fails to Launch Troubleshooting.

Update Windows and graphics drivers
Install available Windows updates and current drivers for your graphics hardware, then restart the PC and test the game. Relic includes operating-system and driver updates among its crash checks: Crash on Startup or In-game.

Temporarily disable mods
Deactivate mods and try to reproduce the problem without them. If the game works, re-enable mods one at a time to see whether a particular mod is involved. Relic recommends deactivating mods as part of crash troubleshooting.

Check for a game update
Make sure Steam has installed any available CoH3 update. Relic’s patch archive includes fixes for particular stability and black-screen issues in past versions, so a historical symptom match does not establish that the same defect affects the current build: Company of Heroes 3 Patch Notes Archive.

Compare your PC with Relic’s published requirements
Relic lists these PC requirements for Company of Heroes 3. The specifications are published minimum and recommended tiers, not a guarantee of smooth performance or a diagnosis of any particular computer. The requirements page states that a 64-bit processor and operating system are required: CoH 3 – PC System Requirements.

Check the whole system rather than judging by one component. These figures do not determine whether an upgrade is compatible with your motherboard, power supply, case, or memory type.

Check runtimes without downloading installers from third-party sites
Relic says Steam installs the required C++ runtimes for Company of Heroes 3. Its launch troubleshooting article lists the runtime files for reference, but for this check, rely on Steam’s installation rather than downloading runtime installers from unrelated websites: Relic’s launch troubleshooting guidance.
Use local-folder changes only after protecting saves
Relic’s blank-screen guidance includes clearing the “My Games” folder, but warns that saves and progress can be lost if they are not backed up first. Copy any saves you want to keep to a safe location before changing or clearing that folder. Do not treat every file in it as disposable.
Relic’s same page also mentions a -refresh launch option, but that tip is specifically for Company of Heroes 2. It is not established as a Company of Heroes 3 fix: Blank Screen After Startup or Cinematic.
Reinstall only if the earlier checks do not help
Relic lists uninstalling and reinstalling as an option for launch failures and crashes. Because this is more disruptive than verifying files or updating drivers, try it after those checks. Follow Steam’s uninstall and install flow, then test the game before restoring mods or making other local changes.

What past patch notes can—and cannot—tell you
Relic’s versioned archive records past changes involving GPU-related crashes, a black screen after missions in the North African Operation, and a Windows 10 issue that stopped some players from launching. Those entries document fixes associated with particular versions; they do not prove that the same issue remains in the current version or that it explains a new failure.
