Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWindows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread

These are separate setup layers. Change one thing at a time: check device detection, correct the mapping, then tune steering or force feedback as needed.
Start by identifying the problem
Check that your computer recognizes the controller or wheel, then open ATS’s controls setup and see whether the game responds when you press a button or move an axis.
- The device is missing or ATS does not respond: focus on detection and the input layer.
- The device appears, but the wrong button or axis responds: focus on control mapping.
- Steering works but feels too abrupt, or small movements do not register: inspect the steering axis and deadzone.
- Steering input works but force effects do not: troubleshoot force feedback separately.
SCS support discussions describe both detection and mapping problems, including reports after updates, but individual forum reports do not establish a defect that affects every player or device. See SCS’s controller support discussion and its controller detection discussion.
Check Steam Input if you play through Steam
Steam Input can affect how ATS receives controller inputs. In Steam, open the game’s Properties and find the per-game Steam Input setting. The exact interface labels may change; test the available choices one at a time. After changing a choice, reset ATS’s control configuration and complete the in-game input wizard again, as SCS support has recommended. This is a troubleshooting step, not a guaranteed fix for every controller.

- Immersive Gaming Experience: Perfect for Xbox and PC gaming titles, the Driving Force simulates the feeling of driving a real car with precision steering and pressure-sensitive pedals
- Premium Control: The Driving Force feedback racing wheel provides a detailed simulation of driving a real car, with helical gearing delivering smooth, quiet steering and a hand-stitched leather cover
- Customizable Pedals: These pressure-sensitive nonlinear brake pedals provide a responsive, accurate braking feel on a sturdy base - with adjustable pedal faces for finer control
- 900-Degree Rotation: Lock-to-lock rotation of the Driving Force means you can turn the wheel around two and a half times, hand over hand on wide turns - just like a real F1 race car
- Up Your Game: Take your racing simulation to the next level with Driving Force accessories like the Driving Force Shifter or desk and rig mounts
If you use a Steam Input layout, try the official SCS layout as a clean starting point before customizing it. SCS’s Steam announcement documents a configuration-file issue tied to the ATS 1.43 controller update in December 2021. SCS said restarting the Steam client would fetch its fix, which did not require a game update, and warned that some manually customized configurations would reset. That was a version-specific historical incident; it is not evidence that the same issue explains a current problem.
Reset a confused mapping and run the input wizard again
- Open ATS’s controls settings and restore the controller selection or configuration.
- Choose the appropriate device type and complete the input wizard, following its prompts for buttons and axes.
- Test the result before making further changes. If a binding is still wrong, adjust that binding rather than changing several settings at once.
- Check the controls in a safe, low-consequence test drive.
These are troubleshooting recommendations, not a verified fix for every device. SCS’s controller support discussion provides the support context for resetting controls and rerunning the wizard.

Tune a detected steering wheel and pedals
If ATS detects the wheel but steering feels wrong, confirm that the steering axis is assigned to the wheel’s rotation axis. Then inspect the steering deadzone: a large deadzone can leave small movements unregistered, while an overly sensitive response can make steering feel abrupt. Adjust incrementally and retest rather than assuming a particular value suits every wheel.
ATS’s input configuration documentation describes analog inputs and deadzone settings, including separate throttle and brake deadzones, but does not prescribe a universal setting for every hardware model. If only acceleration or braking is affected, inspect the pedal axes independently of steering. See SCS’s input configuration documentation.

- PREMIUM BUILD: Look, feel and durability of a real race car wheel, pedals and shifter. Wheel cover, knob and boot are covered in high-quality, hand-stitched leather with a solid steel gear shaft and polished metal pedals
Troubleshoot force feedback separately
Force feedback is distinct from steering input: a wheel can steer in the game even when its force effects are not working. SCS Software’s Force Feedback FAQ (2021) states: “Currently, we support any wheel that has support for constant force application through DirectInput on Windows and evdev on Linux.” This describes supported interfaces, not a model-by-model compatibility guarantee or an exhaustive list of wheels.
If steering works but force effects do not, check the wheel’s driver or software and ATS’s force-feedback settings independently. If the problem persists, seek help through the SCS support forum.

Choose a controller or wheel based on your setup
| Option | Setup effort | Steering feel | Space and equipment |
|---|---|---|---|
| Controller | Usually the simpler route if you already own a compatible PC controller; setup may still require mapping or Steam Input troubleshooting. | Analog steering through the controller’s stick or other controls. | Uses existing controller hardware; no wheel mounting space required. |
| Steering wheel | Requires device and axis setup; force feedback may need separate configuration. | Wheel-based steering, with force effects where the hardware and interface support them. | Requires a wheel and room to position it; pedals or a shifter matter only if included in the setup. |
The available SCS documentation establishes general controller and wheel support categories, not a current compatibility ranking of specific models. Neither device type is a universal fix for an input configuration problem.

Before asking for support, note your operating system, controller or wheel model, connection type, Steam Input state, ATS version, and the steps you have tried. Include the game logs when posting about an unresolved issue, as SCS forum guidance requests them. Steam’s ATS support listing directs technical support to SCS.
