How to Fix Controller, Audio, and Performance Issues with Non-Steam Games on Steam Deck

Fix most non-Steam game problems on Steam Deck by working from the Deck outward: install updates, restart, test the hardware, verify the game’s Steam Input layout and audio output, then reduce graphics load. Non-Steam launchers can limit Steam Overlay and controller features, so a setting that works for one game may not work for another.

Start with the short recovery sequence

Before changing a Proton version, rebuilding a controller layout, or reinstalling a launcher, do the steps below. They clear many temporary problems and establish a clean baseline.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Install available SteamOS and Steam updates. Use the Deck’s normal system-update controls and allow downloads and installation to finish.
  2. Restart the Steam Deck. A full restart can restore input services, audio routing, the Steam Overlay, and a launcher that stopped responding.
  3. Close third-party desktop applications. If you installed utilities or other applications through Desktop Mode, exit or disable them temporarily and retest the game.
  4. Launch the game again through Steam. Keep the Deck in the same handheld or docked configuration while testing so you do not introduce another variable.

If the problem remains after this sequence, use the matching controller, audio, or performance branch below. Steam’s troubleshooting guidance does not promise that an update and restart will fix every non-Steam title. If the application is still unstable after third-party software is removed, contact that application’s support team.

Fix controller problems

1. Test the Deck’s physical controls first

Open Steam’s controller settings and run Test Controller Inputs. Press every face button, shoulder button, trigger, D-pad direction, stick, and the buttons you use to open menus. Watch for a control that never registers, registers continuously, or moves erratically.

  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
  • If an input fails in the test, the issue is below the game layer. Check for dirt, a case pressing a control, or a hardware fault before editing layouts.
  • If every input passes, the Deck is reporting the control correctly and the likely problem is the game’s layout, its launcher, or the input style it accepts.

Testing prevents a common mistake: trying to repair a game configuration when the same stick or button is failing in Steam itself.

2. Inspect the per-game layout

From the game’s library details, open its gamepad or control settings and inspect the active layout. Steam lets you edit a layout and browse community layouts. Choose a layout that matches the game’s actual control scheme, then test it in a menu and during play.

Look for these specific symptoms:

  • Nothing responds: the game may be receiving keyboard and mouse input while Steam is presenting a gamepad layout, or the launcher may have taken exclusive focus.
  • Some buttons work but menus do not: the layout may lack bindings for navigation, or the game may require a different input style.
  • Prompts show keyboard keys: the title may be detecting a keyboard/mouse mapping rather than a native gamepad. That is not automatically a fault; use a layout that maps the Deck controls to the keys the game expects.
  • A “Playable” classification still needs setup: that label can mean manual controller configuration or mouse/touchscreen use is required.

Save a copy of a working layout before experimenting. Change one binding at a time so you can identify which edit helped or hurt.

3. Add the game and launcher to Steam when possible

Steam’s Desktop FAQ explains how to add a non-Steam application to the library. Launching the executable through Steam can expose Steam Input and controller-configuration features that are unavailable when you start it directly from the desktop.

This is not a guarantee. A separate launcher may open first, switch focus, or start the game as a different process. If the launcher accepts input but the game does not, create or select the layout for the game process that actually receives focus. Some launchers also replace the game’s controller detection, so test both the launcher screen and the game itself.

4. Check the Steam Overlay, without treating it as a universal fix

Steam’s controller troubleshooting identifies the Steam Overlay as important to configuration functionality. Confirm that the overlay can open while the non-Steam game is running. If it does not, Steam Input changes may not be applied to that process.

Non-Steam and retail games, especially those using a separate launcher, may not accept the overlay correctly. Also verify that the selected input style is supported by the game. For example, a title that only reads keyboard events may ignore a layout that outputs gamepad events, while a gamepad-only title may ignore keyboard mappings.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Start the game from the Steam library entry.
  2. Use the Deck’s overlay shortcut to open Steam’s overlay.
  3. Return to controller settings and confirm the intended layout is active.
  4. Resume the game and test a movement control, a menu button, and an action button.

If the overlay never appears or immediately disappears, keep the layout troubleshooting focused on the game and launcher rather than repeatedly changing bindings.

5. Troubleshoot an external Bluetooth controller

For a Bluetooth gamepad, work through the connection before changing the game’s layout:

  1. Confirm the controller is paired in the Deck’s Bluetooth settings and has charge.
  2. Check whether the controller manufacturer provides a firmware update.
  3. Disconnect and reconnect the controller.
  4. If it still behaves incorrectly, forget the device and pair it again.

Docked play adds radio variables. Keep the controller and Deck with a clear line of sight, move them away from crowded wireless equipment, and reduce nearby 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi or USB 3 interference where practical. Test the same game with the Deck’s built-in controls; that comparison separates a Bluetooth link problem from a game-layout problem.

Fix missing, distorted, or delayed audio

1. Select the intended output in Steam

Open Steam > Settings > Audio and confirm the output device. A non-Steam game follows the audio route exposed by the system, so a game can be silent even when its own volume slider is correct.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the output every time you change hardware. The Deck’s speakers, a 3.5 mm headset, a USB-C device, Bluetooth headphones, a television, and a monitor connected through a dock can all become the selected audio destination.

2. Restore the built-in speakers

If the speakers are silent, disconnect other devices that could be claiming audio:

  1. Turn off or disconnect Bluetooth audio.
  2. Unplug USB-C audio hardware.
  3. Remove the 3.5 mm plug.
  4. If docked, check the television or monitor as a possible output.
  5. In Steam’s audio settings, switch to another output and then back to the default speakers.
  6. Confirm that Steam interface sounds are enabled.
  7. Restart the Deck if the speakers remain silent.

Test a Steam interface sound or another known-working application before reopening the non-Steam game. If those sounds are also absent, continue treating this as an output-routing problem rather than a game-specific bug.

3. Re-pair Bluetooth audio when latency or quality is poor

A Bluetooth headset that connects can still produce delay, dropouts, or degraded quality. Disconnect and reconnect it first. If that does not help, forget the device and pair it again.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Steam’s troubleshooting guidance also describes trying another A2DP codec, such as SBC or AptXLL, through Desktop Mode sound settings. Treat codec selection as an experiment, not a guaranteed improvement: the available codecs depend on the Deck and the audio device, and a change that reduces delay can alter quality or stability.

4. Configure multichannel audio while docked

When the Deck is connected to a television or monitor over HDMI or DisplayPort and you need multichannel sound, connect the dock first, switch to Desktop Mode, and choose the channel count in the Desktop Mode sound settings. Recheck Steam’s selected output afterward.

For a silent docked setup, test the display’s own speakers or audio receiver with another source, then try another cable or display input if appropriate. A game’s audio setting cannot correct a display connection that is not delivering an audio device to the Deck.

5. Know the LCD and OLED microphone difference

Steam Deck model Built-in microphone while using the 3.5 mm jack
LCD Unavailable
OLED Can be used simultaneously with 3.5 mm audio

This distinction matters in games that use voice chat or microphone input. On an LCD model, a headset connected through the 3.5 mm jack prevents use of the built-in mic; use an input supported by your headset or another connection instead. Steam documents simultaneous built-in-mic and 3.5 mm operation for OLED.

Fix poor performance, stutter, or low image quality

1. Establish a clean performance baseline

Install updates, restart, and close third-party Desktop Mode applications before changing graphics settings. Record whether the problem occurs in handheld mode, docked mode, or both. A title that is smooth handheld but stutters on an external display has a different troubleshooting path from one that performs poorly everywhere.

2. Reduce graphics load in the game

Start with the game’s graphics preset, then adjust demanding settings individually if you want to preserve image quality elsewhere. Lower resolution, shadows, effects, view distance, or other heavy options only as needed; the correct combination varies by game.

Change one setting, load the same area or reproduce the same effect, and compare. This gives you a useful result instead of changing several options and losing track of the cause. Do not assume a particular frame rate or preset is achievable across all non-Steam games: the launcher, engine, compatibility layer, and display mode all affect performance.

3. Use Proton carefully when the title is in the Steam library

For a title launched as a Steam library entry where Proton is relevant, open the game’s Properties > Compatibility settings, enable the option to force a Steam Play compatibility tool, and try the latest Proton version available there.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Those directions apply to Steam library applications. Do not present Proton selection as a universal fix for every non-Steam launcher: a launcher may use its own runtime, may not expose the same compatibility controls, or may require a title-specific configuration. If switching Proton changes behavior, keep the version that works for that game and document it so a later update does not leave you guessing.

4. Account for docked display limits

Docking introduces an external resolution, refresh rate, cable, input connector, and audio path. The Deck may render a higher-resolution display than it does handheld, increasing the load even when the game’s preset is unchanged. Steam’s docking guidance notes that in-game adjustments may be needed for image quality or performance.

  • Try a lower in-game resolution or a less demanding preset on the external display.
  • Check the display’s selected refresh rate and input.
  • Try another cable or connector if the image flickers, drops out, or negotiates an unexpected mode.
  • Retest undocked to determine whether the external display path is the trigger.

Bluetooth interference, USB devices, and cable placement can also affect a docked setup. Change one physical variable at a time, just as you would with a graphics setting.

A decision path for mixed problems

Controller, audio, and performance symptoms can overlap. Use this order when a game appears to have several faults:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Update and restart. Remove temporary software state before deeper changes.
  2. Test physical controls. A failed input test points to hardware or the device connection, not the game.
  3. Verify output and input devices. Confirm Steam audio output and whether a launcher or display has taken focus.
  4. Launch through the Steam library entry. This is the most practical route to Steam Input and Overlay features for a non-Steam application.
  5. Inspect the per-game layout and overlay. Match the layout’s output type to what the game supports.
  6. Separate handheld from docked testing. External displays, Bluetooth devices, USB accessories, and HDMI/DisplayPort audio each add variables.
  7. Reduce graphics demand. Change the game’s preset or individual settings after the input and output paths are known to work.
  8. Escalate to the application’s support team. Individual launchers, anti-cheat systems, and compatibility behavior are title-specific.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Changing several things at once: you cannot tell which change solved the problem, and a later update may recreate it.
  • Assuming “Playable” means plug-and-play: the classification can still require manual layout work or mouse and touchscreen input.
  • Treating every controller issue as hardware failure: run the input test before troubleshooting the game.
  • Treating every silent game as a game bug: another connected device may be the selected Steam output.
  • Expecting the Overlay to work with every launcher: separate launchers and retail builds can limit overlay and Steam Input behavior.
  • Applying Steam-library Proton instructions to every non-Steam launcher: compatibility controls and runtime paths differ.
  • Judging handheld performance from a docked result: resolution, refresh rate, cable, and display processing can change the workload.
  • Promising a universal frame rate: non-Steam games vary too widely for one preset, Proton version, or performance target to fit all of them.

When the problem needs game-specific support

After updates, a restart, hardware tests, output checks, layout verification, and a clean handheld/docked comparison, a remaining fault may belong to the game or launcher. Note the Deck model (LCD or OLED), whether you were handheld or docked, the launch path, the active controller layout, the selected audio output, and any compatibility tool you changed. Give those details to the application’s support team. They can confirm title-specific launcher behavior, anti-cheat requirements, or known compatibility limitations that Steam’s general troubleshooting cannot establish.
