To reduce controller delay, check the display’s Game Mode, verify whether a wired controller is actually communicating over USB, and test wireless and game settings one at a time. Delay can come from the controller connection, game processing, or the display—not just a faulty controller. Work through those sources separately before replacing hardware.
What controller input delay is—and what it is not
Microsoft Learn defines input lag as “the delay between the time that a physical input occurs and an output is sent” in its Xbox Game Development Kit documentation. In practice, the path from pressing a button to seeing the result can involve controller communication, the game’s processing, and the screen’s processing. A slow or interrupted wireless connection is one possibility; a game that is struggling to render or a display adding processing time can also make controls feel late.
That is different from network latency, which affects communication with an online game or server, and from visual stutter, where frames appear uneven or skip. They can feel similar while playing, but changing controller settings will not necessarily fix a network or frame-rate problem. There is no universal diagnostic or measurement protocol established for every platform, game, and display, so use comparisons to narrow down the source rather than relying on a single millisecond target.
Start with the display’s low-latency settings
Enable Game Mode for the TV or monitor input used by the console. Sony recommends Game Mode in applicable BRAVIA guidance, but the menu path and available options vary by display model. Consult the display’s own instructions if the setting is not obvious.

- Impressive gameplay: Provides a pulsating vibration trigger and an asymmetric vibration grip motor for intense tactile feedback.
If both the console and display support Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM), check that it is enabled or set to automatic. On supported PS5 and display combinations, ALLM can switch the screen into a low-latency mode automatically. It does not eliminate delay elsewhere in the chain, and availability depends on the equipment and configuration. See Sony’s BRAVIA guidance and PlayStation’s PS5 display settings guidance.
Check whether a cable is really using a wired connection
A USB cable can charge a controller without carrying data, and connecting a data-capable cable does not always switch the controller from Bluetooth to USB communication. For a wired test, use a cable compatible with the controller that supports data, then confirm the platform is actually using the wired connection.
On PS5
On PS5, open Settings > Accessories > Controller (General) > Communication Method and select Use USB Cable for a wired connection. If Use Bluetooth is selected, the controller can continue communicating over Bluetooth even while plugged in. PlayStation explains the setting in its controller connection instructions.

- With broad game support, the Logitech Gamepad F310 works with old standbys to today's biggest titles, so it's easy to set up and use with your favorite games.
- Profiler software allows the gamepad to be programmed to perform keyboard and mouse commands for games without gamepad support.* * Requires software installation.
- A familiar control layout that doesn't require a learning curve to be able to use, with all the same buttons as on an Xbox 360.
- The unique floating D-pad rests on four switches-instead of a single pivot point-making it responsive to quick changes in direction.
- The six-foot cord lets you lean back and play a comfortable distance from your PC monitor.
On other platforms
Menu names and wired-connection behavior differ by platform and controller. Check the manufacturer’s instructions to confirm the controller supports wired data communication and how to select it. A cable-only test is inconclusive if the cable is charge-only or the platform remains in wireless mode.

Before replacing a wireless controller, try basic connection checks:
- Charge the controller and test with it closer to the console or PC.
- Reconnect it using the platform’s pairing instructions; if practical, remove and pair it again.
- Check for nearby sources of wireless interference or obstructions, then compare behavior in the same place.
- On Windows, consider installing available Windows updates or updating the Bluetooth driver when connection problems suggest a driver or update issue. Microsoft’s Bluetooth troubleshooting guidance covers connection fixes.
Epic’s Fortnite support also discusses supported 2.4 GHz wireless and polling-rate settings where available. Those options depend on the controller, receiver, PC, and game; they are not universal fixes. Follow the relevant device and game instructions rather than applying unofficial polling-rate changes or overclocking as a blanket solution. Epic’s page is specifically about controller input lag in Fortnite, not every game.

Test one change at a time to isolate the cause
Make a single change, then compare the same game and situation before changing anything else. This is a practical way to distinguish connection, display, and game effects; it is not a vendor-validated universal test protocol.
- Enable Game Mode on the display input you use. Retest in the same game and scene.
- If possible, test a confirmed wired data connection. On PS5, first verify that Use USB Cable is selected.
- Test wireless again after charging, moving closer, and reconnecting the controller.
- Try another game or another supported controller/platform combination, if available. Note whether the delay follows the controller, one game, or one display setup.
- On PC or in a game that exposes relevant settings, check the game’s own input options and supported polling settings. Change only options the device supports.
If the result changes only when using a particular display, game, connection mode, or PC setup, investigate that part of the chain before buying a controller. Persistent delay across games and connection modes can still come from game performance, display processing, or platform issues; it does not by itself prove the controller is defective.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsUnderstand frame-rate figures in context
In a 2020 explanation of Xbox Series X latency design, Xbox Wire gives frame-transmission timing examples of 16.6 ms at 60 Hz and 8.3 ms at 120 Hz. These are frame timing examples, not measurements of every controller or game. The same article says that moving from 60 FPS to 120 FPS halves internal latency in the context of Xbox Series X decoupling its rendering and input pipelines; that is not a guarantee for every game or system. See Xbox Wire’s latency explanation.

Reset the controller only after the basic checks
If connection, display, and game checks have not helped, reset the controller using the instructions for its exact model, then reconnect it and retest. PlayStation identifies resetting as a common first troubleshooting step, but reset procedures differ by controller. Follow the relevant PlayStation hardware support instructions or the controller maker’s documentation rather than assuming one model’s button sequence applies to another.
When buying a cable or display makes sense
A compatible USB data cable can be useful for testing or wired play, but check its connector, data capability, length, and compatibility with both the controller and platform. A charge-only cable may not provide controller data, and on PS5 a cable alone may leave Bluetooth selected.
Consider a different display only if testing points to display processing as a contributor. Compare Game Mode or ALLM support, console compatibility, resolution, refresh rate, ports, and price. Neither a new display nor a new controller is the first step when a setting or connection check could isolate the problem.
