Rockstar acknowledged that some Xbox players could not claim the free Red Dead Redemption Xbox Series X|S upgrade at launch and said it was working with Microsoft to fix the issue. The reviewed reporting does not substantiate the specific claim that Xbox Support blamed Rockstar. The upgrade is for owners of the digital backward-compatible Xbox 360 version; Xbox 360 discs are excluded.
What happened with the Xbox upgrade?
When the Xbox Series X|S version arrived on December 2, 2025, some players who owned the digital Xbox 360 edition said the free upgrade was not appearing. Rockstar Support acknowledged the problem and said: “We are aware of an issue where Xbox players are unable to upgrade their digital Xbox 360 version of Red Dead Redemption to the Xbox Series X|S version and are working with Microsoft to resolve it. Thank you for your patience.” The statement was reproduced by GamesRadar+ and GameSpot.
That is an on-record acknowledgment from Rockstar, not a statement from Xbox Support assigning blame. The reviewed coverage does not include a direct Xbox Support exchange or other evidence establishing the headline’s claim that Xbox blamed Rockstar.
Who is eligible for the free upgrade?
Eligibility depends on the format of the Xbox 360 license. Rockstar’s support instructions distinguish digital ownership from physical-disc ownership:

| Xbox 360 copy | Free Series X|S upgrade | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Digital backward-compatible version | Eligible, if owned on the Microsoft account being used | Sign into that same account and download the upgraded version from the Microsoft Store. |
| Physical Xbox 360 disc | Not eligible for this free upgrade, according to Rockstar | The disc does not qualify for the digital entitlement claim route. |
How do eligible digital owners claim it?
- Sign in on Xbox with the Microsoft account that owns the digital backward-compatible Xbox 360 version.
- Open the Microsoft Store and locate the Xbox Series X|S version of Red Dead Redemption.
- Claim or download the upgraded version using that account. Rockstar’s instructions say to use the same account that owns the digital Xbox 360 copy.
If the Store still shows a purchase option rather than allowing a download, first check that the signed-in account is the one that owns the Xbox 360 digital license. A physical disc will not make the account eligible for this free upgrade.
Was the problem later fixed?
Rockstar’s launch-day statement said it was working with Microsoft. On December 11, 2025, Gameranx reported that Rockstar said the digital-upgrade issue had been resolved. That followed continuing player reports: Pure Xbox reported on December 8–9 that access was improving for many, while some users still said they could not claim it. Those reports describe user experiences; they do not establish how many accounts were affected or that every eligible player had the same outcome.

Can you get a refund if you bought the game again?
Pure Xbox reported on January 13, 2026, that Xbox was automatically refunding some customers who had already owned the eligible digital Xbox 360 copy but purchased the Series X|S version during the entitlement problem. The report does not establish that every repurchaser qualified or received a refund. If you bought it again, check your Microsoft account’s order and refund status rather than assuming a refund is guaranteed.
