Persistent crashes require additional checks for DirectX files, permissions, antivirus exclusions, and mods. None of these steps guarantees a fix, but the sequence moves from reversible, low-cost checks to more disruptive diagnosis.
First identify the platform and the exact failure
The support procedures in this guide are for Windows PC. Bethesda’s documented steps use Windows settings, Steam, or the Xbox App and should not be presented as fixes for Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch 2. On a console, use the platform maker’s support process instead of changing Windows or PC launcher settings.

Before changing anything, classify what is happening. A crash to desktop, a game that will not launch, a repeatable crash while loading a save or entering a quest area, intermittent hitching, a consistently low frame rate, and a long load or black screen can have different causes. Write down when the failure occurs, whether it happens every time, and whether it began after a driver, graphics-setting, mod, or game update. That record makes later testing much more useful.
Use a simple symptom test
- Crash to desktop: start with requirements, the installation drive, driver and GPU selection, file verification, then the DirectX, permissions, antivirus, and mod checks.
- Launch failure: check the same baseline, then focus on damaged files, DirectX runtime files, administrator permissions, antivirus interference, and altered or modded files.
- Stutter or hitching: reduce scene and texture load, close background applications, disable overlays, update the driver, and consider a frame-rate cap.
- Low average frame rate: lower quality and resolution, verify that the discrete GPU is being used, and compare the PC with Bethesda’s requirements.
- Long loading or a black screen: confirm the game is on an SSD, verify files, and distinguish a loading delay from a crash. Bethesda’s Update 1.2 addressed some loading symptoms, but not every possible cause.
Check the PC baseline before changing advanced settings
Bethesda lists the following PC requirements. They are comparison points, not proof that buying a component will solve a particular crash or frame-time problem. Bethesda also states that performance scales with better hardware.

| Requirement | Minimum | Recommended | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 version 21H1 or higher | Windows 10 version 21H1 or higher | Confirm the installed Windows version is supported. |
| Graphics API | DirectX 12 | DirectX 12 | Ensure the system and driver support DirectX 12. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 32 GB RAM | Close other programs if available memory is being consumed. |
| Graphics card | Radeon RX 5700 or GeForce GTX 1070 Ti | Radeon RX 6800 XT or GeForce RTX 2080 | Compare the installed GPU with the relevant tier; a requirement match is not a performance guarantee. |
| Storage | 125 GB and an SSD required | 125 GB and an SSD required | Check the actual drive containing the game, not just the drive containing Windows. |
If the machine falls below the published baseline, instability or poor performance may be expected. If it meets or exceeds the baseline, continue with configuration and software checks before assuming that a new GPU, more memory, or a new drive is necessary.
Confirm the game is installed on an SSD
Bethesda’s crash guidance specifically advises against installing the game on a hard disk drive. In Windows File Explorer, find the library folder that contains the game and identify which physical disk it uses. Steam users can move an installation from the game’s storage-management controls; Xbox App users should use the app’s installation-management controls. Check the existing installation first. The documented requirement does not establish a particular SSD capacity, interface, brand, or expected frame-rate increase.
PC troubleshooting sequence: start with reversible changes
Perform one group of changes at a time and test the same save, area, or action after each group. That gives you a chance to identify the change that mattered instead of making several untraceable alterations.
1. Close applications that compete for memory or CPU time
Exit unused browsers, chat clients, music players, recording tools, launchers, and other programs before starting the game. Bethesda identifies applications using substantial memory or CPU resources as a possible contributor to performance problems. Do not close essential security or Windows processes blindly; close programs you recognize and can reopen safely.
2. Update the graphics driver from its manufacturer
Install the current driver offered by the manufacturer of the GPU in the PC. Use the vendor’s present instructions rather than relying on an old driver number quoted in a support article. Restart Windows after installation if the installer requests it, then retest the game. A driver update can change both performance and stability, so note the driver date and version in your troubleshooting record.

3. Make sure the game uses the intended GPU
Laptops and systems with more than one graphics processor can launch a game on integrated graphics instead of the discrete or primary GPU. Bethesda warns that laptop power-saving settings can cause this switch.
- Open Settings > System > Display > Graphics in Windows.
- Add the game executable if it is not already listed. If Windows offers more than one entry, use the entry associated with the installed game.
- Open the game’s Options and choose High performance, or the equivalent setting that names the discrete GPU.
- Save the choice, restart the game, and test the same scene.
Driver control panels can provide another per-application choice, but their labels vary by vendor and driver release. The important diagnostic question is whether the game is actually rendering on the GPU you intended, not whether a control-panel setting exists.

4. Lower the graphics workload
Bethesda’s graphics guidance states that lower quality increases performance. Lower settings are a diagnostic tool as well as a possible long-term compromise: if the stutter disappears at reduced quality, the system is likely running into a graphics, memory, or frame-pacing limit.
| Change | Likely benefit | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Lower overall quality preset | Reduces the combined rendering workload. | Less visual detail. |
| Lower display resolution | Improves GPU performance by reducing the number of pixels rendered. | A softer image, especially on a high-resolution display. |
| Lower texture quality | Reduces memory and processing demand. | Surfaces look less detailed; Bethesda notes that higher texture quality consumes more memory and processing power. |
| Set a frame-rate limit | Can improve frame pacing and stability when the system cannot sustain a higher rate. | Caps peak frame rate instead of maximizing it. |
| Restore auto-detected settings | Removes an aggressive manual setting that may have triggered instability. | May select a conservative configuration. |
If the problem began immediately after changing video options, return the game to its auto-detected values. Steam users can also choose Launch in Safe Mode when that option is offered, then reapply settings gradually rather than restoring every change at once.
5. Disable overlays while diagnosing performance
Bethesda recommends disabling the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar when frame rate or general performance is poor. Turn off only the overlay you are testing, restart the game, and compare the same location or action. An overlay is convenient for chat, screenshots, and recording, so re-enable it later if it is not involved in the problem.

6. Verify or repair the game files
Corrupted or incomplete files can produce launch failures, repeatable crashes, and unusual loading behavior.
- Steam: open the Library, right-click the game, choose Properties, open Installed Files, and select Verify integrity of game files.
- Xbox App for PC: open the game’s installation or management page and use its Verify and Repair control if available.
- Allow the process to finish before launching. If files are reacquired, retest without adding mods or changing several graphics options at the same time.
Verification repairs the installation; it does not fix a PC that is below the requirements, using the wrong GPU, or running out of memory.
What to do when crashes continue
Once the low-risk sequence has been tested, move to checks that affect system permissions, runtime files, security rules, or the game installation. Change one item at a time and keep a note of how to undo it.
Check DirectX runtime files
Bethesda says that reinstalling the required DirectX runtime libraries may resolve some issues. Use Microsoft’s current DirectX runtime guidance and restart Windows when instructed. This is a repair attempt, not evidence that every crash is caused by DirectX; if the runtime is already healthy, reinstalling it may make no visible difference.
Confirm administrator permissions
Make sure the Windows account and the game’s installation location allow the launcher and game to read and write the files they need. If you test running a launcher or game executable with administrator privileges, use that as a diagnostic comparison rather than permanently elevating every program. A permissions change can affect security and file ownership, so return to the normal setting if it does not help.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview antivirus exclusions without disabling protection wholesale
Bethesda includes antivirus exclusions among its crash checks. Security products can quarantine or block a game file, but disabling protection for the entire PC creates unnecessary risk. Instead, consult the security vendor’s instructions, review its detection and quarantine history, and add only the game or launcher folder to an exclusion if you trust the files and understand the risk. Remove the exclusion if it has no diagnostic value or after the conflict is resolved.
Remove mods before reinstalling or repairing
If mods are installed, remove them and return the game to an unmodified state before reinstalling or repairing files. A mod can alter assets, scripts, saves, or configuration files in ways that survive a normal launch. Bethesda’s crash guidance calls for removing mods, reinstalling, and repairing the game when necessary. Back up saves according to the launcher’s or platform’s documented process before deleting files, and test a clean installation before adding modifications back one at a time.
Targeted fixes for stutter, frame pacing, and low frame rate
Stuttering is not the same as a low average frame rate. A system can produce a high average while delivering uneven frame times, and a frame-rate cap may make that experience steadier. Bethesda identifies a cap as a possible aid to pacing and stability, so choose a limit the PC can sustain rather than an arbitrary maximum.
- Close CPU- and memory-heavy background programs.
- Confirm the discrete GPU is selected on a laptop or multi-GPU system.
- Lower the overall preset, resolution, or texture quality and test the same route through the game.
- Disable the Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar.
- Apply a reasonable frame-rate limit and compare frame pacing, not only the displayed average.
- Verify files if the behavior began after an update, crash, or interrupted installation.
Do not report a percentage improvement unless you measured the same scene, settings, driver, and frame-time conditions yourself. No independently published benchmark or representative failure rate establishes a universal FPS gain for any of these changes.

Bethesda’s Update 1.2, dated July 16, 2025, listed a fix for occasional very long fast-travel loading and a separate fix for a long blackout during loading screens. The same update listed shader-preloading improvements. Those notes document issues addressed in that release; they do not diagnose every current loading delay. A remaining problem still warrants the SSD, file-verification, driver, and configuration checks above.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Use a new Windows profile as a diagnostic test
Bethesda recommends testing under a new Windows user profile if the preceding PC performance steps fail. This can reveal a damaged per-user setting, permission problem, or background application conflict. It is a diagnostic branch, not a guaranteed permanent fix.
- Create a temporary local Windows user through Settings > Accounts > Other users and give it only the permissions needed for testing.
- Sign into that profile, launch the game, and reproduce the same stutter, crash, or loading action.
- If the problem also occurs there, the cause is less likely to be limited to the original profile.
- If the game works in the new profile, use Windows System Configuration and Selective startup to identify a conflicting program or service in the original environment.
- Restore normal startup behavior after each controlled test and remove the temporary profile when it is no longer needed.
How the main options compare
| Option | Best symptom target | Effort and reversibility | Constraint addressed | What is documented |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Close background applications | Stutter, low frame rate, launch pressure | Low effort; fully reversible | CPU and memory availability | Bethesda recommends closing unused or resource-heavy applications. |
| Lower quality, resolution, or textures | Low frame rate and GPU-related hitching | Low effort; reversible in settings | GPU, memory, and rendering load | Bethesda documents the performance trade-offs. |
| Select the discrete GPU | Very low performance on laptops or multi-GPU PCs | Low to moderate effort; reversible | GPU assignment and power-saving behavior | Bethesda warns that integrated graphics may be selected. |
| Disable overlays | Performance interference and frame-time problems | Low effort; reversible | Overlay hooks and capture features | Bethesda recommends testing without Steam Overlay or Xbox Game Bar. |
| Verify or repair files | Launch failures, crashes, and damaged installations | Moderate wait; installation remains intact | Missing or corrupted files | Bethesda recommends verification through Steam or the Xbox App. |
| DirectX, permissions, or antivirus checks | Persistent crashes and launch failures | Moderate effort; system-impacting | Runtime availability, access rights, or security blocking | Bethesda lists these as possible crash checks; results vary by system. |
| Remove mods, reinstall, and repair | Mod-related or persistent installation crashes | Highest effort; may alter saves and files | Modified content and damaged installation state | Bethesda instructs users to remove mods before this recovery path. |
| New Windows profile and Selective Startup | Conflicts tied to a user profile or background service | Diagnostic effort; not itself a permanent fix | Per-user settings and startup conflicts | Bethesda recommends it after other PC performance steps fail. |
What Update 1.2 does—and does not—tell you
Bethesda’s July 16, 2025 Update 1.2 introduction said the release focused on fixes for quests, gameplay, and performance. Its performance-related notes included GPU and autosave crash fixes, reductions to frame-rate drops in several specific areas, fewer open-world hitch events, general frame-time improvements, shader preloading, a fix for occasional very long fast-travel loads, and a fix for a long blackout during loading screens.

Patch notes are a history of addressed defects, not a promise that every similar symptom has the same cause. If your crash or hitch remains after the update, use the current configuration and installation checks rather than assuming that the patch should have eliminated it.
Platform caveat: Switch 2, Xbox, and PlayStation
The procedures above are PC-specific. The available evidence does not establish a current, equivalent troubleshooting sequence for Xbox, PlayStation, or Switch 2. A GamesRadar report dated August 11, 2026 quoted Bethesda saying it was looking into bringing some Switch 2 optimizations to other platforms and would share more when able. That statement is not a release date and does not confirm that a patch has shipped to PC, PlayStation, or Xbox. Console players should use the support channel for their platform and check a current official announcement before treating cross-platform optimization as available.
When to contact Bethesda Support
Escalate when the game still fails after a clean, unmodded installation, verified files, current driver, correct GPU assignment, and the relevant runtime and permissions checks. Include information that lets support reproduce the problem:
- Platform and launcher, such as Steam or Xbox App for PC.
- Windows version, CPU, GPU, installed RAM, and whether the game is on an SSD.
- GPU driver version and the game version shown by the launcher.
- Whether the failure is a crash to desktop, launch failure, stutter, low frame rate, long load, or black screen.
- The exact save, location, quest, fast-travel action, or sequence that reproduces it.
- Whether the problem occurs every time or intermittently.
- Whether mods were installed, even if they have since been removed.
- Which troubleshooting steps changed the behavior, if any.
This information separates a hardware or configuration mismatch from a repeatable game defect and prevents support from asking you to repeat checks you have already completed.
