First, identify what is actually failing
Before changing settings, record the symptom and its scope. This prevents you from treating a network problem as an app problem or reinstalling an app when only one episode is affected.

Crunchyroll’s general troubleshooting guidance asks for your device type, country or region, whether other devices are affected, a description of the symptom, and any displayed error message when you escalate. Keep those details while you test.
Think of these comparisons as a way to narrow the fault, not as proof of a single cause. For example, if the same episode fails on one device but other titles play, the issue may be specific to that episode or track. If all titles fail only in one browser, that points more toward the browser profile than the catalog. Change one thing at a time and retry the same episode so you can tell which step made a difference.

Run the reversible checks first
- Close the episode and reopen it. Refresh the browser page or force-close and relaunch the app. If the player is stuck on a spinner, wait for the page or app to close completely before reopening it.
- Restart the device. A full restart clears temporary playback and network states that a simple pause may not.
- Test a different connection. On a phone, compare Wi-Fi with mobile data; elsewhere, use another available network. Do not run the comparison on multiple devices at once if you are checking whether the account session is at fault.
- Sign out and back in on the affected device. This refreshes the account session. Test that single device after signing in so the result is unambiguous.
- Try another title. If only one episode fails, note the exact season, episode, language or dub/subtitle selection, and region instead of immediately reinstalling anything.
These checks are deliberately low-risk. They also create a useful baseline: if changing networks fixes playback, continue with the network section; if only one platform fails, use that platform’s procedure below.
For the account check, keep the test focused on the affected device: sign out, sign back in, and retry there before starting a simultaneous playback test elsewhere. This avoids confusing a session change with a device or network change. If the problem remains, the combination of title, device, and network tests will give you a clearer next step than repeating the sign-in process.
Fix Crunchyroll in a desktop browser
Update the browser and perform a hard refresh
Install the latest available update for your browser, then reload the episode. A normal reload can preserve a broken page state, so use the hard-refresh shortcut: Ctrl+F5 on Windows or Shift+Cmd+R on Mac. Restart the browser after the refresh and try the episode again.
Crunchyroll’s browser guidance listed Chrome 117 or newer, Firefox 117 or newer, Edge 117 or newer, and Safari 16.1 or newer as supported thresholds when that guidance was retrieved on October 13, 2026. Browser requirements can change; treat those numbers as a dated compatibility reference and check Crunchyroll’s current browser-support page before diagnosing an otherwise up-to-date browser as unsupported.
Clear site data, then sign in again
Clear the browser’s cache and cookies for Crunchyroll, close the browser, and reopen it. You will normally be signed out, so sign in again before testing. Clearing only a general cache may leave a stale site cookie behind; use the browser’s site-data controls when available.
Rule out extensions and browser-specific conflicts
- Temporarily disable extensions, especially ad blockers, privacy tools, script filters, and video-related add-ons.
- Open Crunchyroll in a private or incognito window. If playback works there, an extension or stored site data is a likely cause.
- Try a second supported browser. A working second browser narrows the fault to the original browser profile rather than your account or connection.
Restore extensions one at a time after playback returns so you can identify the conflicting extension without leaving every protection disabled.
Check the computer and wired-connection path
Restart the computer and close other programs using the connection. Crunchyroll’s browser-quality guidance recommends Ethernet as a useful way to test a compatible computer when Wi-Fi is unstable. A wired test is diagnostic, not a guarantee: it cannot repair an episode-specific catalog problem, an account-session error, or a browser rendering fault.

You do not need to buy equipment just to troubleshoot. If you already have a compatible wired connection available, compare it with Wi-Fi while playing the same episode. If the wired test works and Wi-Fi does not, focus on the wireless path, router placement, and network congestion; if both fail in the same browser, return to the browser and title checks.

Fix the Crunchyroll app on a phone or tablet
Android and general mobile steps
- Force-close Crunchyroll and open it again.
- Restart the phone or tablet.
- Install pending operating-system and Crunchyroll app updates.
- Close background apps that are consuming memory or network bandwidth.
- Test another network, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi, while playing the same episode.
Reinstall the app only after these steps fail. Reinstallation removes local app data and requires you to sign in again, but it can replace a damaged app installation.
When you compare Wi-Fi and mobile data, keep the device and episode the same. If playback works on mobile data but stalls on Wi-Fi, investigate the home connection rather than reinstalling the app immediately. If it fails on both networks but works on another device, the phone or tablet app is the more useful branch to troubleshoot.
Additional iPhone and iPad checks
Crunchyroll’s iOS guidance also recommends updating iOS, closing background apps, restarting the device, and reinstalling the app if simpler measures do not help. Temporarily turn off any VPN during diagnosis. Crunchyroll states in its browser quality guidance, “Using a VPN is not supported.” Its iOS guidance further notes that a VPN can affect speed, compatibility, or content availability, so disabling it is a diagnostic step rather than a permanent security recommendation.
If you need support for iOS, record the device model, iOS version, Crunchyroll app version, country or region, affected show and episode, and the selected dub or subtitle track. Include a screenshot of any error message.
Fix Crunchyroll on a smart TV or streaming device
- Exit the episode and restart the Crunchyroll app.
- Restart the TV or streaming device.
- Install available system and Crunchyroll app updates.
- Perform a full power cycle: turn the device off, unplug it briefly, reconnect it, and start it again.
- Reinstall Crunchyroll if playback still fails after the restart and updates.
TV menus differ by manufacturer, so use the device’s own instructions for app removal, cache clearing, and updates. If the same account plays correctly in a browser or on a phone using the same network, concentrate on the TV app or device software rather than changing router settings first.
If the TV app has a cache-clearing option, follow the TV maker’s instructions for that model rather than guessing at a menu sequence. Restarting and updating are simpler first steps; reinstall only if playback still fails. Test another episode after each change, especially if the original symptom was limited to one title.
Fix Crunchyroll on a game console
Restart and power-cycle
Close Crunchyroll, restart the console, and retry the episode. If a normal restart does not help, shut the console down completely, disconnect power briefly, reconnect it, and start it again. This full power cycle is different from leaving the console in a standby state.

Install pending console-system and Crunchyroll app updates. Reinstall the app if playback continues to fail. Some consoles provide a platform-specific option to clear temporary cache or storage; use the console maker’s exact support instructions rather than deleting unrelated saved data. Test the same title after each change so you know which action altered the result.

Do not remove unrelated saved data in an attempt to clear a temporary playback fault. Cache and storage controls vary by console, so use only the platform’s documented steps. If the same title works on another device on the same network, that comparison helps keep the focus on the console app or system rather than the router.
When buffering points to the network
Buffering, quality drops, and freezes commonly occur when the connection is unstable or congested. The decisive test is whether the episode plays on another network. If it does, work through the home-network checks below.
Reduce congestion and improve the Wi-Fi path
- Pause large downloads, cloud backups, video calls, and other streams while testing.
- Disconnect unused devices that are consuming bandwidth.
- Move closer to the Wi-Fi router or place the router in a more central, open location.
- Restart the router and confirm that its power and internet indicators show a working connection.
- On a compatible computer, test Ethernet to separate Wi-Fi interference from the wider internet connection.
If Crunchyroll exposes a playback-quality setting, temporarily choose a lower quality while diagnosing an inconsistent connection. A lower setting can reduce the amount of data needed per second; it will not fix a failed login, unsupported browser, or broken individual episode.

If playback becomes steady at a lower setting, the connection may not be maintaining the higher-quality stream consistently. If the episode still will not start, return to the device, session, and title checks instead of assuming the connection speed is the only issue.
Do not treat a router replacement as the first fix
The official troubleshooting guidance emphasizes placement, restart, congestion, and connection testing. It does not establish that replacing a router is normally necessary. Change hardware only after you have shown that the existing network remains unreliable for other services and that basic placement and restart checks do not resolve it.
Before considering hardware, compare another network, check whether other devices are using the connection heavily, and test closer to the router. These steps are free and help establish whether the problem is Wi-Fi coverage or congestion rather than the Crunchyroll app, account, or a particular episode.

DNS changes are optional and should come after restarts, alternate-network testing, updates, and congestion checks. They can change how a device finds online services, but they do not diagnose or repair every account, app, catalog, regional-availability, or service-side problem. Write down the original DNS settings before changing them so you can restore them if other services behave differently.

A DNS change is most relevant when the earlier tests point toward connectivity, not when only one episode or one device app is failing. Because the menus differ across operating systems and connected devices, do not copy instructions for a different platform. If you are unsure how to restore the original setting, skip this optional step and include your test results in a support request.
Separate an episode problem from an account, region, or service problem
Only one episode or language track fails
Try another episode of the same show and then another show. Record whether the failure occurs only with a particular dub or subtitle selection. Do not infer that an error code identifies the cause; note the exact text or code and send it to support with the title and episode details.
Every title fails on one platform
If playback works elsewhere on the same account and network, the failing browser, app, TV, or console is the relevant branch. Complete that platform’s update, cache, restart, and reinstall steps before changing network settings.
Several devices fail on one network
Compare Wi-Fi with mobile data or another network. A successful alternate-network test makes router placement, congestion, Wi-Fi interference, or DNS worth investigating. If both networks fail, preserve the error details and escalate rather than repeatedly reinstalling every app.
Availability differs by region
Include your country or region when contacting support. Catalog and content availability can vary by region, and a VPN can affect compatibility or availability. When the issue is limited to a title, the useful details are the show, season and episode, region, and dub or subtitle selection. That information helps support distinguish a playback symptom from a title or availability question. It is more reliable than interpreting a spinner or error code on its own.

- Device type and exact model.
- Browser name and version, or Crunchyroll app version; include the operating-system version.
- Country or region.
- Show title, season and episode, and whether the problem affects a specific dub or subtitle track.
- Whether every title fails or only selected episodes.
- Whether another device works on the same network.
- Whether another network works on the affected device.
- The exact symptom: endless spinner, black screen, freezing, audio-only playback, or another behavior.
- Exact error text or code, plus a screenshot when possible.
- Every troubleshooting step you already completed and what happened after each one.
This evidence is more useful than a general statement that “Crunchyroll is broken.” The available guidance does not support a universal interpretation for individual error codes, so let support evaluate the code in the context of your device, title, region, and session.

Include results, not just the steps: say whether the same episode played on another device, whether another network changed the symptom, and whether the failure affected all titles or one track. If the symptom changes from a spinner to a black screen or audio-only playback, describe that precisely. A screenshot can preserve the exact error wording that is easy to misremember.

- Refresh or restart, then sign out and back in.

Will clearing cache or reinstalling the app delete my account?
