CurseForge Error 1 is not one specific problem. The same short code can appear when Forge fails during installation or when a modded Minecraft profile installs successfully but crashes as it launches. The correct fix depends on when the error appears.

Start by identifying the failure:
- During installation or download: follow the installation branch below. Network access, security software, Java, permissions, and the installation path are common areas to check.
- After you press Play and Minecraft immediately closes: follow the launch-crash branch. Mods, dependencies, the modloader, Java, drivers, memory, and profile configuration are more likely.
- After the Minecraft window opens: inspect the latest log and crash report before changing anything. The first meaningful error usually gives you more information than “Exit Code 1.”
First: protect your saves and profile
Before reinstalling anything or deleting a modding folder, make a backup of your worlds, screenshots, resource packs, and custom profile files. A repair or duplicated test profile is safer than immediately deleting the entire Minecraft or CurseForge directory.
In CurseForge, the exact labels can vary by app version, but the relevant controls are generally available from the affected profile’s menu—often the three-dot menu—or from the Minecraft installation settings. Use Repair Profile or the equivalent repair option first. If the whole managed installation is affected, use the app’s Minecraft installation repair option.

1. Restart CurseForge and repair the affected installation
- Close Minecraft.
- Exit CurseForge completely rather than leaving it running in the notification area.
- Reopen CurseForge and try the profile once.
- If it fails again, open the affected profile’s menu and choose its repair option. If the problem affects multiple profiles, repair the Minecraft installation from CurseForge’s Minecraft settings.
Repair is a useful first step because it can correct damaged or incomplete managed files without immediately destroying saves or profile customizations. If repair fails, duplicate the profile and use the copy for testing.
2. Run the vanilla Minecraft test
Try launching an unmodded Minecraft installation from the same general Minecraft version family, if one is available. This separates a shared installation or system problem from a modpack problem.
- Vanilla also crashes: investigate the shared Minecraft installation, Java or the runtime, launcher permissions, graphics drivers, and the operating system environment.
- Vanilla works: concentrate on the modloader, mods, dependencies, Java settings for that profile, and the profile’s configuration.
This test is more informative than repeatedly reinstalling individual mods. It tells you whether the failure exists before the modded layer is loaded.
3. Read the log instead of treating “1” as the diagnosis
An exit code is a result, not necessarily the cause. Open the profile’s Minecraft directory and inspect:
logs/latest.log- The newest file in
crash-reports, if Minecraft created one - The installer or app log if Forge fails before the game starts
In CurseForge, open the profile’s folder using its Open Folder or similarly named control. You can also reach the profile’s configured Minecraft directory through the installation settings. Look at files created or modified at the time of the failure, not an old crash report from a different attempt.

Search the log for:
Caused by:Mod loading error,missing dependency, orrequires- A named mod immediately before the crash
Incompatible,Mixin, or loader-version errorsOutOfMemoryError- Java exceptions, native-library errors, or graphics-driver messages
The first useful cause is usually more valuable than the final stack-trace lines. Do not assume the last mod mentioned is automatically guilty: a dependency or loader conflict can make another mod appear near the failure.
4. Check Minecraft, modloader, mod, and dependency compatibility
Every item in a profile must be compatible with the profile’s Minecraft version and modloader. CurseForge profiles can use Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, Quilt, or Vanilla, but those are not interchangeable environments. A Forge mod is not automatically usable on Fabric or NeoForge, and a mod built for one Minecraft release may fail on another even when the name looks similar.

Check the profile’s:
- Minecraft version
- Modloader and its exact version
- Mod versions
- Required libraries and dependencies
- Optional dependencies that the pack expects to be present
If the log identifies a mod, library, or dependency, temporarily disable that item rather than deleting the entire profile. Launch the copy of the profile. If it starts, install or restore compatible versions in small groups until the conflict returns.
Common patterns include a mod downloaded for the wrong Minecraft release, a Fabric mod placed in a Forge profile, two incompatible versions of a library, a missing dependency, and a modloader version that is too old or too new for the pack. If the profile came from a third-party pack author, check that pack’s documented version and known-issues page before changing its files.
5. Check Java—but do not assume Java is always the cause
Java matters when the selected runtime is missing, incorrectly configured, blocked, or incompatible with the Minecraft/modloader combination. It is not safe to conclude that every Error 1 means “reinstall Java.” CurseForge normally bundles or manages a Java runtime for its supported Minecraft setup, so manually overriding that runtime should be a deliberate troubleshooting step, not the default response.

For a manually configured installation, verify the Java executable and the major version required by the specific Minecraft and loader combination. CurseForge’s Forge guidance states that manual installations for Minecraft 1.18 and later require Java 17 or later. That does not mean the newest Java release is automatically best for every older modpack: the loader and pack may document a narrower requirement.
Eclipse Adoptium lists Java 17, Java 21, and Java 25 among its long-term-support lines, but choose based on the pack’s documented requirements and the loader version. Changing from a known-working bundled runtime to a newer system Java can introduce another compatibility variable.
If a log reports an invalid Java path, an unsupported class version, a Java exception, or a runtime that cannot be started, correct the path or select a compatible runtime in CurseForge’s Minecraft installation settings. Restart CurseForge after changing the setting and test again.
6. Check graphics drivers when every profile crashes
If vanilla and multiple modpacks all fail, or the log points toward rendering, native libraries, or a graphics driver, check the driver through the GPU manufacturer’s official support channel:
- NVIDIA: use NVIDIA’s official driver support and installation tools.
- AMD: use AMD’s official support and driver tools.
- Intel: use Intel’s official Driver & Support Assistant or download page.
Do not assume that installing the newest driver must fix the problem. If Error 1 began immediately after a driver update, a manufacturer-supported rollback or an earlier stable driver may be more appropriate. Record the current driver version before changing it so you can reverse the test.

7. Adjust memory only when the log supports it
Large modpacks can fail when Java runs out of heap or Windows is under memory pressure, but increasing the allocation is not a universal Error 1 fix. First look for OutOfMemoryError, an explicit memory-allocation failure, or clear evidence that the pack is exhausting the configured heap.
If the evidence points to memory, raise the profile’s allocation conservatively in CurseForge’s profile or Minecraft settings. Leave enough RAM for Windows and other running applications. Assigning nearly all physical memory to Java can make the computer less stable and can worsen performance through system-level paging. Test after each change rather than repeatedly increasing the value.
8. If Error 1 appears during Forge installation or download
Installation failures have a different troubleshooting path from a game that crashes after launch. Work through these checks:
- Retry after restarting CurseForge. A partial download or temporary app state can be cleared by a complete restart.
- Check the network. Temporarily test without a VPN, proxy, or private-relay feature. Confirm that the network can reach the services CurseForge and the installer need.
- Check antivirus and firewall rules. Security software can block CurseForge, Java, the launcher, or an installer. Use the security product’s documented allow-list process rather than permanently disabling protection.
- Check the installation folder. Prefer a normal user-writable path. Avoid Desktop, OneDrive-synchronized folders, the root of a drive, and paths containing unusual special characters when path or permission errors are reported.
- Check permissions and available storage. Make sure the account running CurseForge can write to the selected directory and that the drive has sufficient free space.
- Repair and retry. If the app offers installation repair, run it after resolving the network or security interference.
These checks are for an installer that cannot complete. They are less useful when the profile installs correctly and Minecraft then crashes, in which case the launch and log branches should take priority.

- Duplicate the CurseForge profile or make a full backup.
- Remove or disable recently added or recently updated mods in the test copy.
- Launch the copy.
- If it works, restore half of the disabled items and test again.
- Continue dividing the suspected group until the failing mod or combination is isolated.
This “small groups” approach is faster and safer than deleting every mod. Keep the original profile unchanged so you can compare configuration, versions, and logs. Some conflicts occur only between two individually valid mods, so a single-mod test may not reveal the problem.
10. Decide who should handle the problem

Include the exact error text—not just “Error 1”—the Minecraft version, modloader and loader version, operating system, affected profile, whether vanilla works, what changed immediately before the failure, and the relevant latest.log or crash report. Include timestamps so support can distinguish the current attempt from older logs. Remove personal paths, account details, and other sensitive information before posting logs publicly.

- “Reinstall Java and it will be fixed.” Java is only one possible branch, and CurseForge may already be using a compatible bundled runtime.
- “Delete every mod.” This can remove the evidence and put saves or custom configuration at risk. Back up first and isolate changes in a duplicate profile.
- “Install a generic PC cleaner.” Registry cleanup and general optimization do not resolve a missing dependency, wrong loader, or incompatible mod.
- “Update every driver automatically.” Use official GPU support first, and consider rollback when the timing points to a recent driver update.
- “Increase RAM as far as possible.” Do this only when the log supports a memory problem, and preserve headroom for the operating system.

- Have you completely restarted CurseForge and tried its repair option?
- Have you backed up saves and duplicated the profile before destructive changes?
- Does an unmodded installation launch?
- What does the current

Once you identify the failure branch and the first meaningful log message, Error 1 usually becomes a more specific problem: a failed installer, a runtime mismatch, a loader or dependency conflict, a driver issue, or a profile configuration error. Treat the code as a starting point—not as proof that one particular fix will work.
