PCGamingWiki documents this as a workaround for a specific exclusive-fullscreen limitation; it is not a universal fix for crashes or other launch failures. For other symptoms, first identify when the failure happens, then use Steam’s basic troubleshooting steps and support route.
Check whether the black-screen workaround fits
This guide covers Dementium II HD, the 2013 Steam PC release—not the original Nintendo DS game. PCGamingWiki reports that the game cannot run in exclusive fullscreen at resolutions above 2560×1440 and documents -popupwindow as a way to launch in windowed mode. A black screen by itself does not establish that this resolution limit is the cause.

- Check whether the game is trying to use exclusive fullscreen above 2560×1440. If not, this documented limitation may not explain the problem.
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Dementium II HD, choose Properties, and enter
-popupwindowunder Launch Options. - Launch the game. If it becomes visible, try a supported resolution or display mode in the in-game options before removing the launch option.
- If nothing changes, remove
-popupwindowand continue troubleshooting. The workaround is not documented as a fix for crashes with other causes.
PCGamingWiki’s Dementium II HD page also describes editing DII_settings.db for ultrawide resolutions. That is an advanced configuration change, not the first step for a standard-resolution launch problem.
Use the symptom to narrow down the failure
Note exactly when the problem occurs before changing more settings. These observations help make a support request useful, but they are not proof of a particular cause.
#1 Best Overall
- Detailed 3D Tokens Compatible with Cthulhu: Death May Die
- 117-piece set: 60 tokens for the base game, 21 Elder Ones tokens and 36 for Season 2 expansion
- Enhance the gaming experience and enrich the atmosphere
- Easy to grip and colour
- PLA Bioplastic - an environmentally friendly and durable material
- No game window appears: record whether Steam shows the game as running and whether any error message appears.
- The screen goes black at launch: note your display resolution and whether you were using exclusive fullscreen. Try the documented workaround only if its resolution condition fits.
- The game reaches the menu but later crashes: note the menu or gameplay point where it happens and whether you can reproduce it.
- The problem is intermittent: record what you were doing and whether the failure occurred before or during gameplay.
Try basic Steam troubleshooting
If the documented display workaround does not fit or makes no difference, use these general checks. They are ordinary diagnostic steps; the available sources do not establish them as Dementium II HD-specific fixes.
- Exit Steam and restart your PC, then try launching the game again.
- In Steam Library, right-click Dementium II HD and open Properties. Find the installed-files option and run Steam’s file verification.
- Retry with the launch options you intend to use, changing one setting at a time so you can tell whether the symptom changes.
- Write down whether the failure happens before a window appears, at a black screen, after the menu, or at a repeatable point during play, along with any displayed error.
What the old patch notes can—and cannot—tell you
The developer-pinned Steam thread records fixes made shortly after release: a December 20, 2013 patch addressed display settings that failed to apply or reverted, as well as a performance issue in the hotel. Notes for version 1.266 on January 7, 2014 added Alt+Enter windowed mode and fixes for 2560×1200 resolution. The initial notice also said a small number of users had crashes under investigation and asked them to provide DxDiag details.
These are historical notes, not evidence of a current universal fix for launch errors or crashes. The pinned notice says, “One thing that is always a big help is if you can provide your DxDiag along with the issue you are experiencing.” Treat that as historical support guidance; the post’s email address has not been confirmed as current.

Use Steam’s Dementium II HD support page as the game-specific support route. Steam’s listing also gives an external support email and website, but their current availability is unverified; if an address bounces or appears stale, use Steam’s support flow instead.
Include the details needed to distinguish a display issue from a crash with another cause:
- Windows version, graphics card and driver version
- Display resolution and whether the game was in fullscreen or windowed mode
- Any Steam launch options you tried and what changed
- When the failure occurs and the exact error message, if one appears
- The game version shown on the main menu, if you can reach it
A recent Steam Community post describes one player’s in-game crashes, but an individual report cannot establish how common the problem is, what causes it, or which fix works for other players.
Keep compatibility expectations realistic
Steam lists the game’s minimum requirements as Windows XP/Vista/7, a Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66 GHz or AMD Athlon II X2 245e, 2 GB RAM, a GeForce 8800GT or Radeon HD 5700, DirectX 9.0c, and 4 GB of storage. The recommended listing names a Core i3-2500 or Athlon II X4 650, 4 GB RAM, a GeForce GTX 285 or Radeon HD 5830, DirectX 9.0c, and 4 GB of storage. These are the store’s historical published specifications, not a current compatibility guarantee or benchmark. Steam’s separate note that its client supports Windows 10 and later beginning January 1, 2024 does not establish that this older game will run on every modern PC.
Steam’s store page identifies the title as Dementium II HD, developed by Memetic Games and published by Missing Link Games, with a release date of December 17, 2013.
