If you see “denied server 0x800070422,” first check the digits. Microsoft documents 0x80070422—without the extra zero—as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. Microsoft says, “This issue occurs when the Windows Update service stops working or isn’t running.” The longer string 0x800070422 is not established as a standard Microsoft error in the documentation reviewed, so it may be a transcription mistake.
There is a second possibility: the message may be a browser scare page rather than a Windows error. A page that claims Windows Defender found a virus, displays a phone number, or demands that you install software is not proof of an infection or a genuine Defender alert. Close it and follow the browser-safety steps below. For a real Windows dialog or a failed update, use the manual service repair first.

The same text can lead to two very different responses. Determine where it appeared before changing Windows services.
A Windows dialog, Settings page, or Microsoft Store message
If the code appeared in Windows Update, the Microsoft Store, or a normal Windows notification, compare it with the documented form 0x80070422. The condition associated with that code is a disabled or stopped Windows Update service. Repairing the service state is the appropriate first step.

A web page or browser pop-up
If the warning appeared inside Chrome, Edge, Firefox, or another browser tab, treat it as untrusted content. A browser page can print any code it chooses, including the malformed 0x800070422, and can imitate Windows branding. The Microsoft Q&A case that records this spelling describes a browser presentation that falsely claimed a virus; it was treated as a scam page rather than a genuine Defender error.
- Do not call a phone number shown in the page.
- Do not give a stranger remote access to the computer.
- Do not install a utility because the page says it is required.
- Close the tab or browser window. If it will not close normally, end the browser from Task Manager and reopen it without restoring the suspicious tab.
- Run a scan with your established security product after the page is closed.
A browser scare page and a disabled Windows Update service can occur on the same computer, but they are separate problems. Fix the service only when Windows itself reports the error.
What 0x80070422 means
The documented code is a service-state error, not a product name and not a diagnosis that your files are infected. Windows Update depends on background services. When the Windows Update service is disabled or cannot run, update checks and some Store operations can fail with 0x80070422.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems| String shown | What is established | How to proceed |
|---|---|---|
0x80070422 |
Microsoft identifies it with ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED and a Windows Update service that is stopped or not running. |
Inspect Windows Update and related services in services.msc, then retry the operation. |
0x800070422 |
The extra zero is not established as a standard Microsoft code in the cited documentation. | Check whether it is a typing or transcription error. If it came from a browser page, follow the scam-page precautions instead of treating it as a Defender diagnosis. |
Do not infer more than the code tells you. It does not identify the reason a service was disabled. A policy, damaged configuration, or security software can prevent a service from starting, and those cases need different follow-up.
Prepare before changing service settings
Service changes affect the operating system, so make the change deliberately.
- Save open work and connect the PC to reliable power if it is a laptop.
- Sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts. If you do not have administrator access, ask the device owner or administrator to perform the steps.
- Write down the exact code, the app that displayed it, and any accompanying text. The distinction between
0x80070422and0x800070422matters. - If a browser page was involved, do not follow its instructions. Close it and scan with your existing security product before continuing.
Fix the documented condition through Services
1. Open the Services console
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog.
- Enter
services.mscand press Enter. - Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
The Services console lists the background components that Windows and applications use. Changes take effect on the computer, so select only the service you intend to inspect.
2. Check Windows Update
- Find Windows Update in the list. The entries are usually easiest to locate by clicking the list and typing the service name.
- Read the Status and Startup type columns. A service set to Disabled cannot start normally.
- Open the service properties by double-clicking it, or right-click it and choose Properties.
- If the startup type is Disabled, change it to a non-disabled setting available on your Windows installation. Do not choose a setting at random if your organization manages the computer; record the existing value and ask the administrator.
- Use Apply, then choose Start when the control is available. If the service is already running, leave it running and close the properties window.
Microsoft lists checking that Windows Update is not disabled and can start as the first mitigation for 0x80070422. If Windows refuses the change, note the exact message rather than repeatedly forcing it.

3. Inspect the related update services
Windows Update work can also depend on other services. In the same console, inspect these entries:
- Background Intelligent Transfer Service (BITS)
- Update Orchestrator Service
- Delivery Optimization
- Windows Modules Installer
For each one, open Properties, check whether it is disabled, and start it when Windows permits and the service is needed for the update operation. Startup behavior differs by Windows version and workload, so the safe objective is to remove an unintended Disabled state and confirm that the service can run—not to impose the same startup setting on every PC.

4. Restart and test
- Close the Services console.
- Restart Windows from Start > Power > Restart.
- After signing in, open Windows Update and select Check for updates. On a Store-related failure, reopen the Microsoft Store and repeat the action that originally failed.
- Record whether the operation completes, returns
0x80070422, or produces a different message. A changed error is useful evidence that the service issue was only one part of the problem.
Use Windows’ update troubleshooting after the service check
If the services can start but the update still fails, use the Windows Update troubleshooter supplied with your edition. The exact labels vary:
- On current Windows 11 builds, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, then run Windows Update.
- On Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot and open the additional troubleshooters list to select Windows Update.
Follow the prompts, allow the check to finish, and restart if Windows requests it. This does not replace checking a disabled service: the troubleshooter can report a condition, while Services lets you verify whether Windows Update and its supporting components are actually able to run.
What to do when a service cannot be changed
“Access is denied” or the controls are unavailable
Confirm that you used an administrator-capable account and approved the UAC prompt. If the account is managed by a school, employer, or family administrator, a policy may intentionally prevent service changes. Do not download a registry file or an unofficial script that promises to unlock the setting. Record the exact Windows message and ask the administrator to review the policy.
The service starts, then stops
Check the related services listed above and retry after a restart. If Windows reports a dependency or configuration error, preserve that wording. A service that immediately stops can indicate damaged system configuration, a policy, or interference from security software; the original code alone does not identify which one applies.
The error returns after every restart
Reopen services.msc and verify the Windows Update startup type and status after the restart. If the setting reverted to Disabled, something is applying that change. Common possibilities include organization policy, a damaged configuration, or security software. Escalate with the exact service name, startup value, and message instead of repeatedly changing the same control.
Browser pop-up recovery and account safety
A fake warning can be persistent because a notification permission or a restored browser session keeps reopening the page. The code itself does not prove that the computer has malware.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Close the tab. Do not interact with phone numbers, “scan” buttons, download prompts, or remote-support requests on the page.
- If the browser is locked, press Ctrl + Shift + Esc, select the browser process in Task Manager, and choose End task. Reopen the browser without restoring the previous session when prompted.
- Review the browser’s site-notification permissions and remove permission for the suspicious site. The wording and menu location differ by browser, so remove only the site you do not recognize.
- Run a scan with your established security product and install Windows updates once the genuine Windows Update service is working.
- If you entered a password or allowed remote access, change affected passwords from a clean device and contact the relevant service provider.
Legitimate Windows alerts do not require you to call a number displayed in a random web page. A real Defender notification is delivered by Windows or the security product’s own interface, not by an arbitrary browser tab.
Compare the available repair approaches
| Approach | Authority | Reversibility | Privacy and access | Can you verify the result? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Services console | Native Windows administration; Microsoft’s documented first mitigation for 0x80070422. |
High if you record the original startup setting and change only the affected service. | Uses built-in tools; administrator approval may be required. | Yes. You can read the service status and retry Windows Update or the Store. |
| Windows Update troubleshooter | Microsoft’s built-in diagnostic path; labels vary by Windows version. | Generally reversible, but review any suggested change before accepting it. | Built into Settings; some checks require administrator approval. | Partly. It can report findings, while Services confirms whether components run. |
| Third-party repair utility | Not the primary Microsoft diagnosis for this code; outcomes depend on the program and configuration. | Varies. Create a restore or recovery plan and review proposed changes. | May require installation, permissions, and review of what is scanned or changed. | Only if you retest Windows Update and inspect service state yourself. |
For this error, the native path is the most transparent: you can see the service named by Microsoft, change its state directly, and test the result. A utility should be considered only after you understand the service condition and have a way to undo changes.
Quick Recap
Final verification checklist
- The displayed string has been recorded accurately, including whether it is
0x80070422or0x800070422. - You identified whether the message came from Windows, the Microsoft Store, Windows Update, or a browser page.
- Windows Update is not unintentionally set to Disabled, and Windows allows it to start.
- BITS, Update Orchestrator Service, Delivery Optimization, and Windows Modules Installer were inspected when relevant.
- You restarted the PC and retried the operation.
- If a service could not be changed, you saved the exact Windows message and avoided random registry downloads.
- If a browser displayed a virus warning, you closed it, refused remote assistance, and scanned with your established security product.
