Bungie says it is commonly caused by a graphics-driver crash—not proof that your GPU is physically broken. Work through the low-risk fixes first, then isolate laptop GPU selection, tuning, overlays, heat, power, files, and hardware.
Fastest checklist: restart Windows, install Windows and GPU-driver updates, remove overclocks and overlays, select the high-performance GPU on hybrid laptops, verify the game files, and cap the frame rate.

What the BROCCOLI code means
Bungie describes BROCCOLI as a GPU-detection problem commonly caused by a driver crash. A Windows graphics timeout or reset can therefore produce the same code as an unstable overclock, laptop using the wrong adapter, overheating, insufficient power, a software overlay conflict, corrupted files, or failing hardware. Destiny 2 may simply expose a marginal system that appears stable elsewhere.
Start with reversible changes. Do not assume that reinstalling the game, editing the registry, or buying a driver-updater utility will repair a driver or hardware fault.

Apply these safe fixes first
- Restart Windows completely.
- Install pending Windows updates.
- Update the graphics driver from the GPU manufacturer. If crashes began immediately after a driver update, clean-install or test the previous known-stable driver.
- Return GPU and CPU clocks, voltage offsets, power limits, fan profiles, and memory profiles to default.
- Disable Steam, Discord, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA/AMD overlays, recording software, RGB tools, and hardware-monitoring overlays.
- On a laptop or hybrid-graphics PC, force Destiny 2 to the high-performance GPU.
- Verify the game files through your launcher.
- Set a conservative frame-rate cap before testing demanding activities.
Update or roll back the graphics driver
Identify the adapter with Windows key + X → Device Manager → Display adapters, or press Windows key + R, enter dxdiag, and inspect the Display tab. Download the driver directly from the appropriate vendor:
- Choose the driver matching your exact GPU and Windows edition.
- Use the installer’s clean-install or factory-reset option when offered.
- Restart Windows.
- Run Destiny 2 with overlays and tuning software still disabled.
Laptop owners should also check the laptop manufacturer’s support page if a generic vendor driver causes display or power-management problems. Avoid unofficial driver-updater programs. A rollback after a newly introduced crash is a diagnostic test, not evidence that an older driver is permanently best.
Force Destiny 2 to use the dedicated GPU
Bungie lists crashes on some laptops with Intel 12th-generation Iris integrated graphics and recommends selecting the discrete adapter. In Windows 10 or 11:

- Open Settings → System → Display → Graphics.
- Add Destiny 2 if it is not listed, then select the executable used by your platform.
- Choose Options, select High performance, and press Save.
- Connect the charger, select the laptop maker’s performance mode if available, and restart the game.
Labels vary by Windows release. This setting has no effect on a system with only one GPU. Launch through Steam, Epic, or the Microsoft PC/Xbox app rather than running the game executable directly; Bungie’s BattlEye support guide warns that direct launching can create separate anti-cheat errors.

Reset tuning
Temporarily return GPU core and memory clocks, voltage offsets, power limits, custom fan curves, CPU overclocks, and automatic tuning to default. Close MSI Afterburner, EVGA Precision X, ASUS GPU Tweak, AMD Adrenalin tuning, NVIDIA tuning utilities, and laptop performance software while testing. If XMP, EXPO, or DOCP memory profiles are suspected, disable them later as a system-stability test rather than making that your first change.
Disable overlays one at a time
Turn off Steam Overlay, Discord Overlay, Xbox Game Bar, NVIDIA App or GeForce overlay, AMD Adrenalin overlay, MSI Afterburner/RivaTuner, OBS hooks, RGB utilities, antivirus game overlays, and browser hardware acceleration if crashes occur when switching applications. If the problem disappears, re-enable each component individually to identify the conflict.

Cap FPS and reduce graphics load
Open Destiny 2’s video settings and set a limit below your normal peak: try 60 FPS on a 60/75-Hz display, or 90–120 FPS on a high-refresh display. Lower the limit again if necessary. Bungie support has suggested keeping GPU usage below roughly 90%; treat that as a troubleshooting target, not a universal rule.
For a controlled test, reduce render scale or resolution, texture quality when VRAM is near full, shadows, depth of field, ambient occlusion, foliage, environmental detail, field of view, HDR, and other advanced display features one change at a time. Lower load can reduce heat, power spikes, and clock fluctuation, but it cannot repair a bad driver, defective memory, or inadequate cooling. If BROCCOLI continues at low settings and a low frame rate, simple GPU load is less likely to be the whole cause.

Verify Destiny 2’s files
Steam
- Open Steam → Library.
- Right-click Destiny 2 → Properties → Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files, wait for completion, restart Steam, and test.
Epic Games Store
- Open Epic Games Launcher → Library.
- Open Destiny 2’s three-dot menu.
- Choose Manage → Verify, if shown, and allow repairs or downloads to finish.
Microsoft PC/Xbox app
Open the game’s Manage or Files page and use Verify and Repair or Repair when available. Controls differ by app version; if no repair option exists, reinstalling through that same platform may be required.

Verification fixes missing or damaged game data only. It cannot correct a GPU driver, overheat, unstable tuning, or failing hardware. Repeatedly damaged files point toward storage health, permissions, antivirus interference, or broader system instability.
Use NVIDIA Debug Mode as a diagnostic
On an NVIDIA system, right-click the desktop, open NVIDIA Control Panel, open the Help menu, and enable Debug Mode if available. Test Destiny 2 with default settings.
Debug Mode makes the card use reference-clock behavior instead of certain factory-overclocked settings. If BROCCOLI stops, investigate the factory overclock, cooling, power connections, and power supply; keep the card at stable default settings or use the manufacturer’s supported controls. This is not a permanent repair. Bungie forum guidance also mentions a reported workaround of approximately −100 MHz core and −50 MHz memory, but safe values vary by model, firmware, cooling, and tuning software, so treat it only as a temporary, model-dependent experiment.

Try Game Mode only as a reversible experiment
Bungie support responses have suggested enabling Windows Game Mode when it is disabled, or disabling it when enabled. Change it once, test, and return to the previous state if there is no improvement. It is not an established BROCCOLI-specific fix.
Decide whether the problem is system-wide

Check temperatures, memory, power, and Windows logs
- Monitor GPU temperature and utilization during the crash scenario.
- Look for colored blocks, flicker, corrupted textures, black screens, or driver recovery.
- Reseat GPU power connectors and confirm the power supply is appropriate for the card.
- Run Windows Memory Diagnostic or a reputable memory test; temporarily disable XMP/EXPO if RAM stability is doubtful.
- Test another demanding game. A successful stress test does not prove every workload is stable.
- Open Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System and check for repeated display-driver or hardware errors.
Escalate to the GPU, system builder, or hardware manufacturer when multiple games fail, the machine restarts or powers off, artifacts appear, or crashes persist after a clean driver install and default clocks.
When to reinstall Destiny 2
Reinstall late, after updates, default clocks, correct GPU selection, disabled overlays, file verification, and load testing. Record settings and keybinds that are not synchronized, ensure adequate free space, uninstall through the same platform, restart if the launcher or anti-cheat installation appears damaged, then reinstall. Reinstallation can replace damaged game data; it cannot fix overheating, unstable power, a bad driver, or defective hardware.
What to send Bungie support
If the error remains, include your GPU model, driver version, Windows version, platform, whether the card or CPU is overclocked, crash frequency, activities that trigger it, whether other games fail, crash logs, and relevant Event Viewer entries. Keep launching through the official platform and distinguish BROCCOLI from BattlEye codes such as PLUOT or PLUM; those are separate error families.
Final decision tree
- Only Destiny 2 crashes: disable overlays, reset settings, and verify files.
- All games crash: investigate driver installation, temperatures, power, RAM, and hardware.
- Hybrid laptop: force the discrete/high-performance GPU.
- Started after a driver update: clean-install or test the previous stable driver.
- Debug Mode helps: investigate factory overclock and cooling/power stability.
- Still crashes at default settings: collect logs and contact Bungie or the hardware manufacturer.
Do not use registry edits such as increasing TdrDelay as a routine fix. They can postpone Windows’ response to a hung GPU while leaving the underlying driver, cooling, power, or hardware fault untouched and harder to diagnose.
