Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFortnite’s “Checking for Updates” screen does not automatically mean the game is corrupted. On Windows, the Epic Games Launcher may be unable to reach an Epic service, complete a download, read its cache, or process local Fortnite data. Check Epic’s service status first, then work from the least destructive fixes—fully restarting and updating the launcher, clearing its cache, resetting Windows networking, checking security software, and verifying Fortnite—before deleting local data or reinstalling anything.
1. Check whether Epic is having an outage
Open Epic Games’ public status page and look for incidents affecting the Epic Games Store, authentication, downloads, or Fortnite. A normal web connection does not prove that every Epic service, CDN, login endpoint, or update service is working.

If the status page shows an incident, stop local troubleshooting and retry after the affected service returns to operational. Reinstalling Fortnite cannot repair a server-side outage.
2. Fully restart and update the Epic Games Launcher
- Close Fortnite.
- Click the Epic Games Launcher icon in the Windows system tray and choose Exit. Closing only the launcher window may leave its background process running.
- Restart Windows, then open the launcher again.
- Click your profile icon, choose Settings, and look for Restart and Update. Install the launcher update if it is offered.
- Start Fortnite and stop once it passes the update check.
Epic includes server checks, launcher updates, cache clearing, administrator mode, and reinstalling in its launcher troubleshooting guidance: Epic Games Launcher troubleshooting.

3. Clear the Epic Games Launcher web cache
This is the targeted cache reset; it is not the same as uninstalling Fortnite.
- Exit the Epic Games Launcher completely from the system tray.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Open
EpicGamesLauncher\Saved. - Delete
webcache,webcache_4147, andwebcache_4430if they are present. - Reopen the launcher and try Fortnite.
One or more folders may be absent. Delete only those listed folders—not the entire EpicGamesLauncher directory. The launcher rebuilds the cache at startup; you may need to sign in again or see some launcher display settings reset. Epic’s path and folder list are documented at its cache instructions.
4. Test the network before changing game files
Restart the network and compare connections
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for them to reconnect.
- Try wired Ethernet if available.
- Test a different connection, such as a phone hotspot, only long enough to diagnose. If Fortnite works there but not on home Wi-Fi, investigate the router, ISP DNS, filtering, VPN, proxy, or security software rather than reinstalling the game.
Reset Windows networking
Open Start, search for Command Prompt, right-click it, choose Run as administrator, and run these commands one at a time:

netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
Restart the computer afterward. Winsock reset repairs the Windows networking catalog; release and renew obtain a fresh DHCP address; flushdns clears locally cached DNS records. These commands are intended to correct stale or damaged local network state, not to increase internet speed. Epic’s procedure is at its Windows DNS/network guidance.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Use another DNS resolver only as a secondary test
If the reset does not help, test a different DNS provider through your router or Windows network-adapter settings. Record the original values first so you can restore them. DNS changes can help when an ISP resolver returns stale or failed lookups, but they cannot fix an Epic outage, blocked traffic, or damaged files. Epic lists DNS changes among broader connection checks at its connection troubleshooting page.
5. Check VPN, proxy, firewall, and antivirus interference
- Disconnect a VPN temporarily and retry.
- In Windows 11, open Settings → Network & internet → Proxy. Windows 10 uses the same general Network & Internet → Proxy area, although labels can vary by build. Disable an unintended manual proxy or setup script.
- Allow the Epic Games Launcher and Fortnite through Windows Defender Firewall.
- Check third-party antivirus web shields, firewalls, ransomware protection, and application-control features.
- If you disable security software for a test, do so briefly, test once, and immediately re-enable it. Never leave protection disabled as a permanent fix.
Epic identifies firewall, proxy, hosts-file, background-application, and security-software interference as possible causes: connection troubleshooting and PC ESP troubleshooting. On a school, work, or otherwise managed network, contact the administrator rather than changing controls without permission.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

6. Verify Fortnite’s files
- Open Epic Games Launcher and select Library.
- Find Fortnite, click its three-dot menu, and choose Manage.
- Click Verify and wait for validation to finish.
- Launch Fortnite again.
Verification compares the installation with the expected files and repairs differences. It can take time and does not replace a complete reinstall. Epic says saved data is not affected by this process: file-verification guidance.
If Verify is unavailable, Fortnite may still be running, the library may not have loaded correctly, or launcher metadata may be damaged. Exit the launcher fully, reopen it—optionally as administrator—and clear its cache before considering launcher repair.

Keep working space available
Epic’s PC troubleshooting guidance says to maintain at least 10 GB free on the drive where Fortnite is installed. Updates can need temporary space beyond their displayed download size for unpacking, replacement, and verification. Ten gigabytes is a troubleshooting minimum, not a guarantee that every future update will fit comfortably. See Epic’s PC ESP guidance.

Synchronize the clock
Open Settings → Time & language → Date & time, enable automatic time and time-zone detection where appropriate, and select Sync now if available. Restart the launcher afterward. A clock error is a low-risk check, especially when authentication or verification also fails, but it is not the most likely explanation for every update-screen hang.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Use the advanced local-data reset
Only try this after the launcher cache, network, security, and verification steps.
- Close Fortnite and exit the Epic Games Launcher.
- Press Windows + R, enter
%localappdata%, and press Enter. - Delete the
FortniteGamefolder. - Restart Windows.
- Run Epic Games Launcher as administrator.
- Open Library, use Fortnite’s three-dot menu, select Manage → Verify, and let the process finish.
This folder is local Fortnite data—not necessarily the main installation directory. Removing it can erase local configuration, shader, log, or other cached data, so note or back up custom settings first; rebuilding or redownloading data may follow. If Windows refuses to delete it, restart and try again. Epic documents this as an advanced PC troubleshooting step at its ESP article.

9. Reinstall only after the earlier steps fail
Reinstall the Epic Games Launcher
Choose this when the launcher itself will not update or load correctly, multiple Epic games fail, or cache clearing and administrator launch do not repair it. Epic’s Windows reinstall procedure can remove installed titles, so read its warnings and be prepared for additional downloads: launcher troubleshooting.
Reinstall Fortnite
Reserve this for repeated verification failures, a demonstrably damaged installation, or an issue that follows the game despite network and security tests. Reinstallation consumes substantial time, disk space, and bandwidth; it is not an appropriate response to a live Epic outage.
Consider the installation drive
Epic reports that installing Fortnite on the same drive as the Epic Games Launcher has resolved some ESP errors. That is a documented workaround for certain errors, not a universal Fortnite requirement. Consider it only after less disruptive fixes and explain the download cost before moving or reinstalling the game.
Use the symptom to choose the next step
| Observed symptom | Most useful next action |
|---|---|
| Epic status page reports an incident | Wait for service recovery; do not reinstall. |
| Launcher will not update or load, and other Epic games fail | Exit fully, clear webcache, test administrator launch and security settings, then repair or reinstall the launcher. |
| Fortnite works on a hotspot but not home Wi-Fi | Restart the router, test DNS, remove VPN/proxy interference, and inspect router filtering or ISP routing. |
| Only Fortnite fails while other Epic games work | Verify files, check storage, then consider the advanced FortniteGame reset. |
| Verification reports no problems | Continue investigating outage, DNS, firewall, VPN/proxy, cache, clock, or network filtering; a clean verification does not rule these out. |
When to contact Epic Support
Escalate through Epic Games Support when the status page is operational but the problem persists across multiple networks after cache clearing, network reset, verification, and any necessary reinstall. Include the exact error code if one appears, whether other Epic games work, and which network and security tests changed the behavior. Managed-network users should involve their administrator before altering firewall, proxy, DNS, or router policy.
