Fix Valheim desync in this order: identify whether the server uses Steam or Crossplay, verify the matching network path, validate the launch script and firewall, inspect logs, and then measure host load and route quality. Steam-backend servers need the configured port and the next port reachable from the Internet; Crossplay uses a relay and does not need inbound router forwarding. Start with those facts before changing game files, installing mods, or applying operating-system tweaks.

What Valheim desync and lag actually look like
“Desync” describes a disagreement between the server’s authoritative world state and what one or more players see. The visible result can be rubber-banding, delayed interactions, creatures snapping to earlier positions, doors or chests taking several seconds to respond, or a brief freeze followed by a burst of movement. “Lag” is broader: it can come from Internet delay or packet loss, a server process that is busy, a saturated upload connection, or a single player’s local route.

Classify the symptom before changing a setting. The pattern does not prove a cause, but it determines which checks are sensible.
Everyone freezes or rubber-bands together
If every connected player sees the same pause at approximately the same time, suspect the server process, the host machine, or the network path between the host and the group. Check the host’s CPU, memory, disk activity and upload use while reproducing the hitch. A common event seen by all players is less likely to be caused by one person’s Wi-Fi or graphics settings.

Only one player has high latency
If one player is delayed while others continue normally, begin with that player’s route: Wi-Fi interference, local VPN or security software, a congested home connection, or an ISP path problem. Compare the same player from a wired connection or another network if possible. Do not open additional server ports solely because one client has a bad route.
The problem appears near one base or terraformed area
A hitch that occurs near a heavily built or extensively terraformed location points toward the simulation work required in that area or a host that is approaching its practical capacity. Reproduce the issue in an unbuilt area and note whether the timing changes. This comparison is a diagnostic observation, not a published performance threshold.

Valheim’s network path depends on the backend selected in the dedicated-server launch configuration. Iron Gate’s dedicated-server guide documents both approaches.
Steam backend
With the Steam backend, players connect through the server’s reachable network address. Iron Gate documents a configured port and the immediately following port: the default pair is 2456 and 2457. Both must be accessible from the Internet. If you change the launch script to another starting port, the required pair becomes that port and port+1.

Crossplay backend
Iron Gate states in its Crossplay FAQ that Crossplay transmits data through a relay server and therefore does not require port forwarding to be accessible from outside the local network. You still need to allow the server application through the host firewall and maintain a stable connection from the host to the relay, but you should not create inbound router rules merely to make Crossplay work.
Use a backend switch as a controlled test
Record when the hitch occurs, who experiences it, and which world area is involved. Schedule a restart when the group can tolerate an interruption, change only the backend setting, and repeat the same activity. Improvement after a backend change demonstrates that the network path changed; it does not establish that Crossplay is universally faster or that Steam is inherently faulty. Restore the previous configuration if the test introduces connection problems.

Steam backend: verify the two required ports
Port forwarding fixes only an unreachable inbound path. It cannot correct a saturated upload link, a stalled server process, or a single player’s poor route. Work through the checks in this order so that each layer is consistent.
- Read the launch script. Open the supplied Windows or Linux server script and find the configured
-portvalue. If it remains at the documented default, the pair is 2456-2457. If it is set to another number, use that number and the next consecutive port. Do not add a third port from habit; the documented requirement is the configured port and port+1. - Match the router rule to the script. In the router’s port-forwarding page, create rules for both ports and point them to the host machine’s current local IP address. Choose the protocol options offered by the router that match the dedicated-server documentation, and reserve the host’s local address so the rule does not silently point to a different device after a reboot.
- Allow the server through the host firewall. Permit the dedicated-server executable or the two configured ports in the operating system firewall. Check both the active network profile and any security suite that can apply a second firewall. A router rule cannot bypass a blocked host firewall.
- Check for an upstream NAT barrier. Cable or fiber equipment may sit in front of a second router, creating double NAT. Carrier-grade NAT (CGNAT) can also prevent unsolicited inbound connections even when your own router appears correctly configured. If the router’s Internet-facing address is private or differs from the address shown by your ISP account, ask the ISP whether CGNAT or an upstream gateway is involved. Port forwarding on the inner router cannot solve a forwarding rule that never reaches it.
- Confirm the server reached its connected state. Watch the dedicated-server console for the “Game server connected” message described in Iron Gate’s guide. A missing message, repeated startup error, or immediate disconnect means you should resolve the launch or network error before testing in-game rubber-banding.
Iron Gate’s guide also explains that the original launch file can be replaced during a Steam update. Keep a copy of your edited script and recheck its -port value after updates; a reset to the default can make the router rule and the running server disagree.

Crossplay: what the relay changes
Crossplay is useful when the host cannot accept inbound connections, when players are on different platform ecosystems, or when router administration is unavailable. The relay removes the need for an Internet-facing port-forwarding rule, so an unopenable home router is not by itself a reason to abandon a Crossplay configuration.
A relay is not a guarantee of lower latency. The route now includes the relay service and its location relative to the host and players. Compare the same reproducible activity after a planned backend switch rather than judging from one short session. If Crossplay connects but still freezes for everyone, continue with host-load, firewall, log and uplink checks; the absence of port forwarding does not eliminate those causes.

The supplied launch script is the supported control point for a dedicated server on Windows or Linux. Iron Gate’s guide describes configuring the server through that script. Make a backup copy before editing it, because updates can restore the original file.
Check the arguments that affect diagnosis
- Confirm the backend selection is the one you intend to test.
- Confirm the
-portvalue and derive the second required port from it. - Confirm that the world name, save location and server identity are unchanged so a backend test does not accidentally start a different world.
- Add a logfile argument when collecting evidence. The Valheim Dedicated Server Help FAQ documents
-logfileas a way to capture server output.
Change one argument at a time, restart cleanly, and record the result. Editing several values at once removes the comparison that tells you which change mattered.

Read logs and remove network-interfering software one change at a time
Use the logfile option while reproducing the issue, then correlate timestamps with what players saw: startup, connection, save, warning and disconnect entries are more useful when you know the exact minute of the hitch. Keep the original log and a copy of the launch script before making changes.
The Valheim Dedicated Server Help FAQ calls out software that can modify or prioritize traffic, including Killer Network Manager, ASUS GameFirst VI and Lenovo Vantage Network Boost. Treat these programs as suspects, not proven causes. Disable one suspected optimizer at a time, restart the affected software if necessary, reproduce the same scenario, and record whether the symptom changed. Re-enable it when the test is complete if it was not responsible.
Apply the same discipline to VPN clients, traffic shapers, third-party firewalls and “gaming” network modes. A diagnostic result is meaningful only when the world, players and activity are comparable between runs.
Separate server workload from Internet delay
Observe the host while the group reproduces the hitch. Record CPU utilization, memory pressure, disk activity and upload saturation rather than relying on how the game feels from one client.

Signs of a host-side stall
- All players pause together, including those on different networks.
- The server process shows a CPU or disk spike at the same timestamp as the freeze.
- The delay is concentrated in a large base, a dense construction area or a heavily terraformed region.
- The console or logfile stops producing normal activity during the event.
Reduce unrelated work on the host, close backup or synchronization jobs that compete for disk and upload capacity, and test again. If the process continues to stall locally, moving the world to a machine or managed service with a more reliable power, storage and Internet connection may help. The official documentation does not publish a universal CPU, RAM, upload-speed or player-count requirement, so no single hardware number can certify that a server will be free of desync.

- Only one player, or one geographic group, sees the delay.
- The host’s resource use remains normal while the affected player’s connection fluctuates.
- Changing from Wi-Fi to wired Ethernet or using another Internet connection changes the symptom.
- The issue follows a player rather than a particular world location.
In this case, investigate the player’s local network and ISP route, and compare the server from another location. Relocating the server can help when the route is poor; upgrading host CPU will not repair packet loss between a player and the server.

A home server is not automatically worse than a rented one. The relevant question is whether you can maintain the network path, host reliability and operational tasks your group needs.

Choose self-hosting when you need direct file access, custom scripts and full control and can keep the machine reachable and maintained. Choose a managed service when router restrictions, unreliable household power or limited administration time are the dominant problems. A provider is not a cure for a poorly configured world or a player-side route; confirm that you can inspect logs, restart quickly, restore backups and use the mods your group actually needs.
Mods, executable patches and registry tweaks are last resorts
Changing mods, patching the executable, editing registry values or applying undocumented network tweaks can alter timing and connectivity, but the cited official and community sources do not establish any of these as universal desync fixes. Such changes also make later diagnosis harder by adding variables.

If you must test one, back up the world and launch script, document the exact change, test with the same players and activity, and keep a rollback path. Remove the change if it does not produce a repeatable improvement. Never use an unverified patch on the only copy of a world.
A repeatable troubleshooting workflow
- Write down the symptom. Note the time, players affected, world location, backend, host resource use and any console warning.
- Classify the scope. Decide whether the event affects everyone, one player or one area.
- Identify the backend. Read the launch script rather than guessing from how players connect.
- Validate networking for that backend. For Steam, verify the configured port and port+1, router forwarding, firewall permission and the absence of CGNAT or double NAT. For Crossplay, remove unnecessary inbound forwarding from the diagnosis and verify outbound connectivity and firewall permission.
- Confirm startup. Look for “Game server connected” and capture a logfile when needed.
- Test interference. Disable one traffic optimizer or VPN-related component, reproduce, and record the result.
- Measure the host. Compare CPU, memory, disk and upload activity during a hitch and during a normal period.
- Run a controlled backend comparison. Change only Steam versus Crossplay, restart, and repeat the same activity if the group can tolerate the interruption.
- Escalate deliberately. If the host is the bottleneck, improve the machine or move the server. If the route is the bottleneck, test another network or server location. Only after these checks should you experiment with mods or undocumented system changes.
Maintenance that prevents a recurrence
- Keep a backup of the edited launch script because Steam updates can reset the original.
- Back up the world before changing backend settings, mods or executable files.
- After every game or server update, recheck the backend,
-portvalue, firewall rule and router destination. - Keep a short incident log with timestamps, affected players, location and host resource readings.
- Schedule restarts and backups rather than waiting for a severe freeze to force them.
- Review traffic-optimizer, VPN and third-party firewall updates when a previously stable server begins rubber-banding.
The fastest reliable fix is usually a configuration correction: use the right backend, make the exact Steam port pair reachable when Steam is selected, or stop trying to forward ports when Crossplay is selected. Logs and host measurements then tell you whether the remaining problem is the machine, the route or one client.
