Most Disco Elysium PC crashes can be narrowed to one of four situations: the game fails during launch, it closes while you play or load a save, SteamOS/Proton has a compatibility problem, or Windows itself freezes, shows a blue screen, or restarts. Start with the general Windows checklist below, then use the symptom-specific section that matches your failure. Do not jump straight to reinstalling: updating Windows and the graphics driver, disabling hook-based overlays, and verifying the Steam installation often resolve application-only crashes without affecting your saves.
Identify what actually crashes
The timing and scope of the failure determine which fix is sensible. Write down the exact error text before changing anything; a Unity message, a black screen, and a forced reboot point to different layers of the system.

Crash before the main menu
An immediate return to the desktop, a Unity2020.3.12f1 message, or a crash while Steam says the game is preparing to launch is a launch-time failure. Corrupted or incomplete game files, an outdated graphics driver, overlays, mods, and hybrid-graphics configuration are the first things to test.
Crash while playing or loading a save
If the menu opens but the game closes during a conversation, scene transition, or save load, record the exact action and location. A repeatable failure at one save does not prove that every save is damaged; verify the installation and remove software that injects an overlay before drawing that conclusion.

Black screen, freeze, blue screen, or forced restart
A game-only crash normally returns you to Windows. A black screen that requires a power button, a blue screen, or a complete restart is a system-stability event. Steam Support says these errors indicate a problem with the computer rather than Steam, the game, or the application. Treat overheating, drivers or firmware, memory, storage, and overclocking as separate investigation areas.
Linux or SteamOS failure
Native Windows advice does not automatically apply to Proton. Valve’s Proton issue tracker contains Disco Elysium reports involving graphics-driver and runtime configuration, including experiments with PROTON_USE_WINED3D and file-descriptor behavior. Use those reports only for a Proton installation and keep a note of the distribution, kernel, Proton version, and GPU driver when asking for help.
Check the published PC requirements
Compare the affected computer with the requirements published by Steam and ZA/UM in 2019. Meeting the minimum does not guarantee that every modern driver, mod, or display configuration will behave correctly, but hardware below the minimum is a valid reason to investigate an upgrade or a lower-complexity setup before repeated software repairs.

Check the processor and installed memory in Settings > System > About. Check the graphics adapter and driver in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display, or in Device Manager under Display adapters. Leave more free space than the stated 20 GB if Windows is also low on disk space; the published figure is the game’s requirement, not a promise that a nearly full system drive will remain stable.
Complete this Windows checklist in order
1. Restart Windows and Steam
Exit the game and Steam, then restart Windows. Reopen Steam after the restart and try the same action once. This clears a stuck game process, a driver session that failed to reset, and temporary file locks without changing your installation.

2. Install pending Windows updates
- Open Settings > Windows Update (in Windows 10, this is Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update).
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when Windows requests it.
- Retry Disco Elysium before changing several other variables. If an update is waiting for a restart, the driver and runtime state you test is not yet the final state.
3. Update the graphics driver from the adapter maker
Install a current driver for the actual NVIDIA, AMD, or Intel adapter in the computer. On a laptop with integrated and discrete graphics, check both adapters: Windows can launch the game on one while the other remains outdated. Use the manufacturer’s package for your model or the laptop maker’s validated package, follow its clean-install or reset option when offered, then restart. Do not assume that Device Manager’s message that a driver is current means the newest game-tested package is installed.
4. Disable overlays and hook-based utilities temporarily
Overlays and monitoring utilities inject code into a running game. Temporarily turn off non-essential Steam, chat, recording, performance-tuning, RGB, and similar tools, including any mod loader that changes the game process. Close them rather than merely hiding their windows. Re-enable one item at a time after the game is stable so that a returning crash identifies the conflict. This is a diagnostic step, not a claim that every overlay is unsafe.

- Open Steam and select Library.
- Right-click Disco Elysium and choose Properties.
- Open Installed Files.
- Select Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game again before restoring overlays or mods.
Steam describes this process as checking whether the game’s files are installed correctly. Steam also notes that some local configuration files can fail verification normally, so a message that a small configuration file was replaced is not, by itself, evidence of a continuing installation fault. The process can download replacements; let it complete rather than launching during the check.
6. Test an unmodded installation
Remove or disable mods and third-party loaders for the next test. A mod that worked on an earlier build can fail after a game, driver, or Proton update. Keep a copy of any mod list and configuration before changing it, and restore items individually only after an unmodded session survives the same scene or save load.
7. Reinstall only after the checks above
If the crash remains after updates, a clean overlay-free test, and file verification, reinstall the game. Before uninstalling, preserve saves and configuration where applicable; cloud synchronization is not a substitute for confirming that a local save has been uploaded and is available. Reinstall to a healthy drive with adequate free space, verify the files after installation, and run the first launch without mods or overlays. ZA/UM community guidance also recommends reinstalling or submitting a bug report when launch problems persist.

Fix an immediate launch crash or Unity error
Use the general sequence first
For an immediate desktop crash or a Unity2020.3.12f1 startup error, complete the Windows checklist in order: restart, update Windows and the graphics driver, disable injected utilities, verify files, then test without mods. This sequence distinguishes a corrupted extraction from a process-injection or driver problem without deleting saves.
Check hybrid graphics only when the symptoms match
A community report describes a Unity2020.3.12f1 startup failure on a hybrid-GPU system that was worked around by temporarily disabling Intel integrated graphics, launching in windowed mode, and then re-enabling the adapter. This is anecdotal and configuration-specific, not a universal fix. Consider it only if the computer has both Intel integrated graphics and a discrete adapter and the error matches the report.
- Open Device Manager and expand Display adapters.
- Record the adapter names and create a restore point or other recovery plan before changing a device state.
- Temporarily disable the Intel integrated adapter, launch the game in windowed mode, and observe whether the startup failure changes.
- Re-enable the adapter immediately after the test. Do not leave a laptop’s display device disabled as a permanent workaround.
If this test changes nothing, re-enable the adapter and return to driver, overlay, and file checks rather than repeating the experiment.
Interpret “Preparing to Launch” failures
Steam says that a game that will not launch is often affected by corruption in extracted game files. That is why verification is placed before reinstalling. If verification repeatedly reacquires the same files, check free disk space and drive health, then record the result for support; repeated replacement can indicate a storage or permissions problem rather than a one-time download error.
Fix crashes during play or while loading a save
Make the trigger reproducible
Write down the area, dialogue, inventory action, save slot, and approximate time from launch. Try one earlier save and, if possible, a new game. A crash that follows one save but not a new game is useful evidence, while a crash at every location points back toward drivers, overlays, files, or system stability.

Verify files and remove process injectors
Run Steam’s Verify integrity of game files procedure again if the crash began after an update or an interrupted download. Keep recording, tuning, RGB, and overlay programs closed for the reproduction attempt. Steam specifically notes that verification can help when content is missing or when a game crashes during play.
Do not infer a universal cause from one community report
Community anecdotes can identify patterns but do not establish that every save-loading crash has the same cause. Compare the exact trigger, game version, driver, mods, and hardware before applying a workaround. If only one save fails after verification, preserve it and report the reproducible action rather than repeatedly overwriting it.

Separate application troubleshooting from hardware stability
A forced restart, blue screen, or persistent black screen requires a system-level check. Stop launching the game repeatedly until Windows is stable at the desktop. Review whether the computer is overheating, whether the GPU or chipset driver recently changed, and whether any CPU, GPU, or memory overclock or undervolt is active. Return those settings to stock for testing.
Check cooling, memory, storage, and firmware
- Watch CPU and GPU temperatures under a controlled load and clean blocked vents; unusually high temperatures can cause protection shutdowns.
- Run the memory diagnostic available in Windows and investigate reported errors rather than treating them as a game bug.
- Check the system drive for file-system or health warnings and keep sufficient free space for Windows and Steam operations.
- Install stable motherboard, chipset, storage, and firmware updates from the computer or motherboard maker when the vendor identifies a relevant stability fix.
- Disconnect recently added hardware and retest if the restart began after an upgrade.
If other demanding applications also trigger the restart, prioritize hardware and driver diagnostics. A game reinstall cannot repair defective memory, unstable power delivery, or an overheating GPU.

Use a safe diagnostic path on SteamOS or another Linux distribution
First confirm that the failure occurs under Proton and record the Proton version, distribution release, kernel, GPU model, and driver. Try the current supported Proton versions offered by Steam one at a time, keeping the rest of the configuration unchanged. Disable mods and overlays, verify the game files, and compare a new game with the affected save.

Valve’s Proton issue tracker includes Disco Elysium reports tied to graphics-driver and runtime settings. One reported variable is PROTON_USE_WINED3D; file-descriptor behavior is another reported area. These are diagnostic leads for Proton users, not Windows instructions. If changing a Proton launch option alters the crash, record the exact option and revert it if it introduces rendering problems before reporting the result.
Prepare an effective support report
If the sequence does not resolve the problem, provide enough detail for support to reproduce or classify it. Steam describes system reports as records of the computer’s hardware and software configuration that help diagnose conflicts. ZA/UM support asks players with persistent launch problems to provide details through its bug-report channel.
- Exact error text, including the full Unity message if one appears.
- Whether the failure occurs at launch, in a particular scene, while loading a named save, or only after a specific action.
- Whether the symptom is an application exit, a black screen, a freeze, a blue screen, or a forced restart.
- Windows edition and build, or the Linux distribution and Proton version.
- CPU model, GPU model, installed RAM, storage location, and graphics-driver version.
- Whether overlays, recording tools, tuning utilities, RGB software, mods, or loaders are installed, and whether the crash remains with them disabled.
- The date you verified files, whether Steam reacquired files, and whether reinstalling changed the behavior.
- Relevant Unity, Steam, Windows event, or Proton logs, with personal information removed.
Include a short reproduction sequence such as “launch with all overlays disabled, load the second save slot, enter the same area, crash after the dialogue choice.” That is more useful than reporting only that the game “randomly” closes.

What to conclude from the result
If verification, current drivers, and an overlay-free launch solve the issue, restore optional utilities one at a time and keep the conflicting item disabled. If only one save or scene remains affected, preserve the evidence and report it. If Windows still restarts or shows a blue screen, stop treating the problem as a game installation fault and continue with temperature, memory, storage, firmware, and stock-clock checks. Matching the remedy to the failure layer is safer than applying an unrelated tweak repeatedly.
