How to Fix DISM RestoreHealth Error 0x800700xx

“0x800700” is not a complete DISM error code. The final two hexadecimal digits (for example, 0x80070002, 0x80070003, 0x80070005 or 0x80070057) identify the Windows condition, so record the entire code shown by DISM before choosing a code-specific remedy. For most corrupted-component cases, Microsoft’s supported sequence is to run DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in an elevated Command Prompt, then run sfc /scannow.

DISM normally downloads repair files through Windows Update. If Windows Update cannot supply the payload, use a matching Windows installation or side-by-side folder with /Source and /LimitAccess. The source must correspond to the installed Windows release, edition, language and architecture; otherwise RestoreHealth can fail again.

What the 0x800700 prefix tells you

Windows error values beginning with 0x800700 are HRESULTs that include a Win32 condition. The prefix by itself is only an incomplete label. A diagnosis based only on “0x800700” risks applying the wrong fix: a missing path, an access problem, an invalid parameter and an unavailable repair payload are different situations.

When the command finishes, copy the complete code and the sentence immediately before or after it. Also note whether DISM says that source files could not be found, whether it stopped at a percentage, and whether the command was run against the online installation. Those details determine whether you need Windows Update, an offline source, or log inspection.

For context, Microsoft’s upgrade-error documentation identifies 0x800f081f as “source files not found,” while other completed 0x800700xx values map to different Win32 conditions. Do not treat every code that starts with 0x800700 as the same error.

Prepare an elevated DISM session

  1. Save your work and sign in with an account that can approve administrator prompts.
  2. Open Start, type Command Prompt, right-click it, and select Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt.
  3. Keep the full error text visible or copy it to a note. You will need the exact suffix if the standard repair does not complete.
  4. If you plan to use Windows Update as the source, connect the PC to the internet and leave Windows Update services available. If the PC is offline or its update client cannot obtain files, skip to the offline-source procedure below.

Run the commands in Command Prompt, not in a non-elevated window. An administrator account alone is not enough if the console was opened without Run as administrator; DISM can then fail before it can service the image.

Run the Microsoft-supported online repair first

Microsoft describes DISM as the tool that “provides the files required to repair your corrupted files.” Its standard procedure repairs the currently running Windows installation and uses Windows Update as the default source.

  1. In the elevated Command Prompt, enter:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
  1. Press Enter and let the operation finish. The command may spend time checking the component store and obtaining replacement files, so do not close the window merely because progress pauses.
  2. Read the final status. A successful completion means the image repair operation completed; an error message means you should preserve the exact HRESULT and move to the matching branch rather than repeatedly running the same command.

The /Online switch targets the Windows installation that is currently running. /Cleanup-Image selects servicing operations, and /RestoreHealth asks DISM to detect corruption and restore required components. No separate source is specified in this first attempt, so Windows Update supplies the files when it can.

Supply a repair source when Windows Update cannot

Use an explicit source when RestoreHealth reports that required files cannot be obtained, Windows Update is unavailable, or the machine must be repaired without contacting the update service. Microsoft supports a running Windows installation or a Windows side-by-side folder on removable media or a network share.

Use a Windows folder as the source

Place or expose a repair folder whose path contains the Windows side-by-side files. Replace the example path with the real location:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:C:RepairSourceWindows /LimitAccess

/Source tells DISM where to search for replacement files. /LimitAccess prevents DISM from contacting Windows Update, which is useful when the update client is broken or the computer is disconnected. Check the path carefully: a mistyped drive letter, a disconnected network share, or a folder that does not contain the required payload produces a source or path error.

Use mounted installation media and a WIM or ESD payload

A mounted Windows installation image may expose a Windows directory or an image file under the media’s sources directory. The command pattern for a WIM source is:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:<mounted-drive>sourcesinstall.wim:<index> /LimitAccess

Replace <mounted-drive> with the mounted media’s drive letter and <index> with the image index that matches your installed edition. Do not guess the index. Installation media can contain several editions, and the correct value depends on the media you have. Identify the index first, then run the command with that value. If your media provides an ESD rather than a WIM, use the payload format and path exposed by that media instead of copying the WIM example literally.

Choose matching media

The repair source should match all of the following as closely as the installation media allows:

  • Windows release or operating-system version
  • Edition, such as the edition installed on the PC
  • Display and system language
  • CPU architecture, such as 64-bit or 32-bit

Microsoft troubleshooting guidance also says that a computer used as a repair source should run the same operating-system version. A source from a different release or edition can lack the exact component DISM needs, causing RestoreHealth to fail even though the path is valid.

Prepare removable media safely

If you need to carry installation files between computers, a USB flash drive for Windows installation media is only the carrier; the Windows files themselves should come from Microsoft installation media. Mount or connect it, verify the drive letter and source path in File Explorer, and then use the corresponding /Source command. Remove the drive only after DISM has finished.

Fix common source and path failures

DISM still cannot find source files

First confirm that the source matches the installed version, edition, language and architecture. Then confirm the exact folder or image path and, for a WIM, the edition index. If the media is from another Windows release, obtain media corresponding to the installed release instead of forcing an index from the wrong image.

The computer cannot reach Windows Update

Use the explicit source command with /LimitAccess. This tells DISM to rely on the local, removable or network source rather than falling back to the unavailable update client. A network-share source must remain reachable for the duration of the operation.

The command reports an access or parameter problem

Reopen Command Prompt with Run as administrator, confirm that every switch begins with a forward slash, and check that the source path contains no accidental characters. Preserve the complete HRESULT; the final two digits are needed to distinguish a path, access or parameter condition.

A source works for one PC but not another

Compare the two installations. A source that matches one machine’s release and edition may not match the other’s language, architecture or build. Microsoft’s guidance requires the source computer or media to correspond to the operating-system version being repaired.

Run System File Checker after DISM

Microsoft documents DISM first and System File Checker second. After RestoreHealth completes successfully, leave the elevated Command Prompt open and run:

sfc /scannow

SFC checks protected Windows system files after DISM has repaired the underlying component source. Wait for SFC to reach 100 percent and record its final message. If SFC reports that it could not repair some files, do not discard the DISM and SFC output; it helps identify whether the remaining problem is a component-source issue or a specific file problem.

Use the logs when the error persists

Two logs provide different evidence:

  • %windir%LogsCBSCBS.log records servicing activity and can identify the package or file that could not be obtained.
  • %windir%LogsDISMdism.log records DISM-level command, source and path details.

Open the logs in a text editor after the failed run and search near the end for the exact HRESULT, “error,” “source,” or the package name shown in the Command Prompt. The CBS log is the better place to look for a missing package or file; the DISM log is more useful for a malformed path, source-selection failure or command-level error. Save copies before trying another repair so that a later run does not make the original failure harder to isolate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the complete suffix to select the next action

Do not substitute a generic fix for the missing digits. Capture the code in a form such as 0x80070002, not merely 0x800700, and pair it with the final DISM sentence.

  • If the message explicitly says source files are missing, verify source matching and use the /Source and /LimitAccess procedure.
  • If the message points to a path or access condition, check elevation, drive letters, network availability and folder permissions before changing the source.
  • If the message identifies an invalid parameter, review the command spelling, quotation, source syntax and WIM index.
  • If the completed code is not explained by the message, use both logs and retain the full command output for a code-specific diagnosis.

Microsoft’s error tables assign different meanings to completed HRESULTs, so the same prefix cannot establish one universal cause. The suffix and the surrounding text are the deciding evidence.

When to stop repeating RestoreHealth

Repeatedly running the default command without changing the source or correcting the reported condition rarely adds information. Stop and switch methods when:

  • Windows Update cannot download the required payload.
  • The same source-not-found result appears after a successful-looking progress run.
  • The source media does not match the installed release, edition, language or architecture.
  • The final HRESULT changes or remains unexplained after checking both logs.

At that point, document the exact command, full error code, source path, media details and the relevant CBS and DISM log entries. That record makes it possible to choose a matching source or seek further Windows servicing support without guessing.
