Error 0x80070032 is most commonly a Microsoft Store download or update failure on Windows 10. Start by identifying whether the message appears in Microsoft Store or Windows Update, then use the matching troubleshooter, cache reset, Store repair, service check, package-registration, and network checks below. The hexadecimal code does not prove one universal cause.
What error 0x80070032 means
Windows uses hexadecimal error codes across several components, so 0x80070032 is a symptom rather than a complete diagnosis. In the scenario documented most directly by Microsoft, the message appears while an app downloads or updates in Microsoft Store, often as “Something unexpected happened with error code 0x80070032.” Microsoft guidance also covers a wider class of Store package failures involving registration, installation, winget, policy, and blocked network endpoints.

The same code can appear in other update or package contexts. That is why the first step is to note the exact screen, app or update name, and whether one item or every download fails. A fix aimed at Store cache will not correct a Windows Update service problem, while changing Store registration is unnecessary if the failure is only in Windows Update.

Identify where the failure occurs
| Where you see 0x80070032 | Likely first path | What to record |
|---|---|---|
| Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update | Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, then check for updates | The update name or KB number and whether other updates install |
| Microsoft Store > Library, or an app’s Store download page | wsreset.exe, Store Repair/Reset, and Microsoft Store Install Service |
The app name and whether one app or all Store items fail |
| Store package or registration operation | Check package registration, policy, firewall, and proxy settings | The command used and its complete error text |
| Only on a work, school, or managed computer | Check organizational policy and endpoint restrictions | Whether the same account or network works elsewhere |
If you are unsure, reproduce the error once and write down the exact location before changing anything. That prevents applying Windows Update steps to a Store problem—or resetting Store components when the blocked path is actually a proxy or policy.

Prepare before changing Windows components
- Sign in with the Windows account normally used to download the app or update.
- Close the Store and any installer windows, then save open work.
- Confirm the computer has a working internet connection. If possible, test a different connection only after recording the original result; a changed network is useful evidence.
- Keep the app or update name visible. The code by itself is not enough to identify the failing package.
- After each change, retry the same download. If it succeeds, stop rather than making additional system changes.
Fixes for the Windows Update case
1. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter
Microsoft describes the troubleshooter as a first-line response to download and installation error codes: “If you get an error code while downloading and installing Windows updates, the Update Troubleshooter can help resolve the problem.” On Windows 10, use this exact path:
- Open Start and select Settings.
- Choose Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot, then Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any repair it offers and restart Windows, even if the troubleshooter does not request an immediate restart.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Record whether the troubleshooter reports a repaired service, database, or configuration issue. If it reports no problem and the same code returns, move to the Store-specific section only if the original message was in Microsoft Store; otherwise continue with Windows Update diagnostics supplied by your organization or Microsoft.
2. Separate one-update failures from system-wide failures
Try checking for updates again after the restart. If only one named update fails while other updates install, keep that update’s name and error text; the code may relate to that package rather than the entire update service. If every Windows Update download fails, capture the result before changing Store components, because the Store remedies below target a different layer.
Fixes for the Microsoft Store case
1. Reset the Microsoft Store cache with wsreset.exe
This is the code-specific first remedy documented for the Store scenario. It clears the Store cache without requiring you to uninstall the Store.

- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog.
- Type
wsreset.exe. - Press Enter.
- Wait while the command window runs. Do not close it manually; it should close when the operation finishes.
- Microsoft Store should reopen. Try the same download or update again.
The command may appear to do nothing for a short time. That is normal while the cache reset completes. If Store does not reopen or the code returns, continue to Repair and Reset.
2. Repair, then reset Microsoft Store
Windows 10 provides separate Repair and Reset actions. Repair is the less disruptive choice; Reset is the next step if Repair does not resolve the failure.
- Open Start > Settings.
- Select Apps, then Apps & features.
- Find and select Microsoft Store.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair, wait for it to finish, and retry the download.
- If the code remains, return to the same page and choose Reset, then confirm the reset.
- Open Microsoft Store, sign in if requested, and retry the exact app or update.
Because Reset clears the Store app’s local data, you may need to sign in again or reapply Store preferences. It does not mean that the Windows Store package should be uninstalled.
3. Check Microsoft Store Install Service
The Store Install Service handles installation work. A disabled or stopped service can prevent downloads even when browsing the Store works.

- Open its properties and check that its startup configuration is not Disabled.
- If the service is stopped, use Start. If it is already running and the controls allow it, choose Restart.
- Close the Services window and retry the Store download.
Do not alter unrelated services while troubleshooting this code. If a work or school policy controls the service, note that restriction instead of forcing a setting that will be reverted.
4. Check Store package registration
Microsoft Learn documents package registration as a remedy when the Store package exists but its registration is damaged or incomplete. First inspect the package in a regular, non-elevated PowerShell window:
- Open Start, type PowerShell, and open Windows PowerShell without selecting an administrator option.
- Run:
Get-AppxPackage *Microsoft.WindowsStore*
Review whether a Microsoft Store package is returned. If Microsoft Store is present but registration is the suspected failure, Microsoft Learn documents registering the existing package by family name with:

Run the command exactly as shown, wait for PowerShell to finish, then restart Windows and retry the same Store operation. If PowerShell returns an error, keep the complete text; it may identify a permission, package, or policy problem that needs a different remedy. Do not improvise a package name from a partial result.

5. Check policy, firewall, and proxy blocks
Store downloads require access to Microsoft’s service endpoints. Microsoft Learn advises checking whether policy, firewall, or proxy settings block those endpoints. This is especially important when:
- Downloads fail on a managed work or school PC but work on a personal computer.
- Every Store app fails while web browsing appears normal.
- The problem occurs only on one network, VPN, or proxy.
- Store registration and cache reset complete without changing the error.
On a managed computer, ask the administrator to verify the organization’s Microsoft Store policy and permitted endpoints. On a personal computer, temporarily compare results on a trusted direct connection, without disabling security controls permanently. If a firewall or proxy rule is responsible, the durable fix is to correct that rule rather than repeatedly resetting Store.
6. Use winget when the Store interface is the failing layer
For apps available through the Windows package catalog, Microsoft Learn documents winget as an alternative installation path. Open a terminal or PowerShell window and search for the app:

winget install <App name>
Replace <App name> with the real name; the angle-bracket text is a placeholder, not a command to paste literally. This route is applicable only when the app is listed and your account or organization permits it. If winget produces a different error, record that message separately instead of treating it as proof that the original Store issue is fixed.
Choose the next step by symptom
| Observed pattern | Most useful next action | Why |
|---|---|---|
| One Store app fails, other apps download | Retry after wsreset.exe, then Repair/Reset; record the app identity |
The problem may be package-specific rather than a system-wide Store outage |
| All Store downloads fail | Check Install Service, registration, and endpoint or policy access | A shared Store component or network path is implicated |
| Only Windows Update shows the code | Run the Windows Update troubleshooter and restart | The error is occurring in the update surface, not necessarily Store |
| Only a managed network fails | Ask the administrator to check policy, firewall, and proxy endpoints | Local cache changes cannot bypass an organizational block |
Store UI fails but the app is listed by winget |
Try winget search and winget install |
An alternate package path may avoid the failing Store interface |
What not to do
- Do not uninstall Microsoft Store as a first remedy. Microsoft states that completely uninstalling the Store is unsupported.
- Do not assume the code means malware. The documented causes include cache, registration, service, policy, and endpoint conditions; the code alone does not identify a security threat.
- Do not repeat resets without testing. Retry the same download after each change so you know which action changed the result.
- Do not remove firewall or proxy protections permanently. Use a controlled comparison or have an administrator correct the relevant allow-list or policy.
- Do not substitute a Store fix for a Windows Update fix. Start from the surface where the message actually appears.
Windows 10 support status and why it matters
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft says free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended for Windows 10. That end-of-support status does not explain every 0x80070032 occurrence, but it affects what assistance and future compatibility you can expect. If the computer meets requirements for a supported Windows release, plan an upgrade; if it must remain on Windows 10, preserve the exact error details and check your organization’s support policy before relying on a Store or update operation that may require a newer supported environment.
When the error remains
Stop after the sequence above if the download succeeds. If it does not, collect a concise record before seeking Microsoft or organizational support:
- The exact text of the message and the code, written as
0x80070032. - Whether it appeared in Windows Update, Microsoft Store Library, an app page, PowerShell, or
winget. - The exact app or update name, including any displayed version or KB identifier.
- Whether one item or every item fails.
- Which steps you completed: troubleshooter,
wsreset.exe, Repair, Reset, Install Service check, registration command, and network or policy comparison. - The full text of any new PowerShell or
wingeterror.
This record distinguishes a Store package problem from a Windows Update failure and gives an administrator or Microsoft support technician a reproducible starting point. The code is not a guarantee of one root cause, so a precise surface, scope, and network context are more useful than repeating the number alone.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after trying the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clear temporary and cache files, provide privacy and vulnerability checks, and include tools such as real-time boost, file shredder, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
