Start by checking which frames OBS says it is losing. An increasing Dropped Frames count points to the connection between OBS and the streaming server; missed rendering frames or an encoding-overload warning point to your PC; viewer buffering without OBS drops may be a problem on viewers’ networks or devices. Each symptom needs a different fix.
Diagnose the kind of frame problem first
In OBS, open View > Stats and watch the counters while streaming or running a representative test. OBS separates network drops from rendering and encoding lag; viewer buffering is a separate experience and is not itself proof that OBS is dropping frames.
| What you observe | Most likely area to investigate | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The Dropped Frames counter rises or the connection status turns yellow or red | Network route to the ingest server, unstable upload, or bitrate too high for the connection | Try another ingest server and compare a lower bitrate |
| Missed rendering frames or an encoding-overload message | GPU or other system resources shared by the game and OBS | Check GPU load, then reduce game or OBS workload |
| Viewers report buffering but OBS shows no dropped frames | Viewer bandwidth, location, device, or stream accessibility | Ask whether the issue affects multiple viewers; consider a more accessible output configuration |
OBS describes software itself as an extremely unlikely cause of network dropped frames. Its troubleshooting guidance distinguishes connection trouble from encoding performance and viewer-side buffering. See the OBS Stream Connection Troubleshooting guide, Encoding Performance Troubleshooting guide, and Stream Buffering Troubleshooting guide.
Fix network dropped frames
Work through these checks in order, changing one major variable at a time. The goal is to isolate whether the bottleneck is the server, bitrate, local network, or the route beyond your home.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
- Test another ingest server. In OBS, check the streaming service’s server selection and try a different ingest server, then compare the Dropped Frames counter under similar conditions. For Twitch on Windows, OBS names TwitchTest as a way to identify a server with a better Quality score. If you use Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting, OBS suggests testing with it disabled or setting its maximum streaming bandwidth below the TwitchTest result.
- Lower the video bitrate. Reduce the bitrate in OBS’s output or streaming settings and test again. OBS Project’s 2024 guidance offers 75% of total upload speed as a starting point, not a guarantee: a speed test measures total upload capacity at that moment, not how consistently the route to a particular streaming server can sustain it. Also stay within the limits of the service you use; OBS’s guidance does not establish one universal bitrate for every platform.
- Compare another service only as a diagnostic. If the connection works reliably to another service, that helps narrow down whether the issue is specific to the original service or route. It does not repair a service-specific problem.
- Use wired networking where practical. OBS warns that Wi-Fi can be unstable for streaming. If you are on Wi-Fi, test Ethernet before buying replacement equipment. A cable is not a cure for every cause: the router, modem, network card, switch, or extender can also fail, and congestion or routing outside your home can remain.
- Check software that can affect traffic. Temporarily test without a VPN, security software, or network-prioritization utility, following that software’s safe procedure. OBS names Lenovo Vantage and Killer NIC software as examples of utilities that may deprioritize OBS. Update network drivers if they are outdated.
- Review OBS network options cautiously. OBS’s connection guide lists Windows-only network optimizations and TCP pacing among configuration checks. Keep Bind to IP at Default unless you have a specific reason to change it. You can test IPv4 Only; if it makes no difference, restore IPv4 and IPv6.
- Try Dynamic Bitrate Adjustment only as a compromise. It can lower bitrate during congestion to help keep the stream moving, but OBS cautions that this does not fix the root cause and can reduce stream quality.
- Escalate the diagnosis if local checks fail. Inspect suspect cables and network equipment rather than replacing parts blindly. If you cannot tell whether local hardware is faulty, ask your ISP; if the connection still drops after local checks, contact the ISP because congestion or routing beyond your home may be involved.
Fix rendering lag and encoding overload
If OBS reports missed rendering frames or encoding overload rather than a rising network Dropped Frames count, reduce competition for system resources. These checks are especially relevant when a demanding game, complex scenes, and encoding run at once.
- On Windows, run OBS as administrator. OBS says this can reserve GPU capacity for OBS and often resolves GPU-overload issues. If it does not help, continue with the workload checks rather than assuming the network is at fault.
- Reduce the game’s GPU demand. Check whether other programs are heavily using the GPU. Cap the game’s frame rate at your monitor’s refresh rate, enable V-Sync, or lower graphics settings to leave capacity for OBS.
- Lower OBS output demands. Reduce output resolution or frame rate and test again. If 60 fps is unstable, OBS suggests trying 30 fps. Choose a setting that remains stable during the most demanding parts of gameplay, not only on a quiet screen.
- Simplify scenes to find expensive sources. Temporarily disable overlays, browser sources, filters, or other demanding elements one at a time. Reduce expensive sources and use media sized appropriately for its on-screen display. If disabling one element resolves the lag, rework or remove that element before restoring the rest.
When viewers buffer but OBS does not drop frames
First check OBS’s dropped-frame counter rather than treating every buffering report as a broadcaster connection failure. Viewers have different networks, locations, and devices, so one viewer can buffer while your OBS connection remains stable.

If the stream is difficult to receive on less capable connections, try a lower bitrate and, if needed, lower resolution, quality, or frame rate. This can improve accessibility for viewers with less bandwidth. The benefit also depends on whether the platform provides transcoding; without it, viewers may not have a lower-bandwidth version to select.
Improve stream quality without guessing
- Change one setting at a time and note the OBS counter or warning before and after each test.
- For network drops, test the route and bitrate before reducing resolution or buying hardware.
- For rendering or encoding lag, reduce GPU load or scene complexity before troubleshooting the ISP.
- For viewer buffering alone, seek reports from more than one viewer and check whether lowering output demands helps.
- Do not treat a speed test’s upload result as a promise that your stream route can sustain that bitrate continuously.
Or let it run in the cloud
These OBS fixes are for a live PC-based broadcast. If your goal is to keep a YouTube channel live by looping uploaded videos, StreamNeo runs that stream from the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Your computer and home connection do not have to stay on. It streams the upload as made, up to 4K 60fps, at one price per slot; automatic recovery can restart the stream if YouTube drops it. The first day is free with no card. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. It is for uploaded videos, not camera broadcasts, and streams to YouTube only. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
