There is no single best bitrate for every live stream. Choose the recommendation for your platform, codec, resolution and frame rate, then confirm your upload connection and encoder can sustain it. For a 1080p60 stream, current official examples differ sharply: YouTube recommends 17 Mbps for H.264 or 12 Mbps for AV1/H.265, while Twitch’s conventional example is 6,000 kbps. A stable stream matters more than pushing a higher setting.
Recommended live-stream bitrates at a glance
These are platform-published ingest recommendations or example profiles, not independent test results. Keep the platform and codec attached to each number: a bitrate for one service or codec is not automatically right for another.
YouTube Live
YouTube’s current encoder guidance distinguishes H.264 from AV1 and H.265/HEVC. The values below are recommended video ingest bitrates.

|---|---|---|
| 720p30 | 8 Mbps | not stated in YouTube’s listed values |
| 720p60 | 8 Mbps | 6 Mbps |
| 1080p30 | 14 Mbps | 10 Mbps |
| 1080p60 | 17 Mbps | 12 Mbps |
| 1440p30 | 21 Mbps | 15 Mbps |
| 1440p60 | 34 Mbps | 24 Mbps |

How to choose the right bitrate for your setup
- Choose the destination and mode. YouTube accepts H.264, H.265/HEVC and AV1 over RTMP/RTMPS, and its recommendations vary by codec. Twitch has conventional profiles as well as Enhanced Broadcasting. Start with the relevant platform guidance rather than copying another creator’s setting. YouTube encoder guidance · Twitch Enhanced Broadcasting.
- Select a resolution and frame rate your system can sustain. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more bitrate or encoding headroom. If gameplay is dropping frames or the stream disconnects, lower the output demand rather than forcing a higher number.
- Check real upload capacity. YouTube recommends using a speed test and choosing quality that produces a reliable stream. Treat the upload rate you can sustain—not just the advertised speed of your internet plan—as the practical ceiling. Leave room for normal network variation and other household traffic.
- Match the encoder profile to the chosen platform and codec. Do not apply a YouTube H.264 recommendation to AV1, HEVC or Twitch by assumption.
- Use the recommended rate-control and keyframe settings. YouTube lists CBR, recommends a 2-second keyframe frequency and says not to exceed 4 seconds. Twitch’s conventional examples also use CBR and 2-second keyframes.
- Test under realistic conditions. Use similar game motion and audio, then monitor stream health. YouTube explicitly advises testing before going live. OBS troubleshooting guidance recommends lowering video bitrate when the stream connection is unstable.
Bitrate is only one part of stream quality
Connection stability and encoder load
A higher bitrate can improve the picture only if the platform can use it and your connection can deliver it consistently. It cannot fix an overloaded encoder or unstable internet. Twitch advises prioritizing stability over pushing quality that risks dropped frames or strains the connection. Its encoding guidance notes that x264 can tax the CPU and reduce game frame rate; GPU encoding such as NVIDIA NVENC uses a dedicated encoder. If encoding load is the problem, first test a supported hardware encoder or reduce output demands—new hardware is not a universal requirement.
Audio and compatibility settings for YouTube
YouTube’s guidance lists AAC or MP3 audio and 128 kbps stereo audio in its advanced settings. It also recommends square pixels, progressive scan, two B-frames, one reference frame, CABAC, Rec. 709 for SDR and 8-bit SDR. For HDR, it recommends H.265/HEVC and 10-bit; that guidance says AV1 is not supported for HDR. These are compatibility and encoder details, separate from the video bitrate table.

YouTube recommends RTMPS, an encrypted extension of RTMP. Its service transcodes live streams into multiple output formats for different devices and network conditions, so your encoder’s ingest settings and a viewer’s playback rendition are related but not identical.
Twitch 1440p and Enhanced Broadcasting
Do not treat 1440p as a standard Twitch profile available to every channel. Twitch’s 2K offering is tied to Enhanced Broadcasting. In an announcement dated June 17, 2026, Twitch said 2K streaming using HEVC was available to Partners and Affiliates. Eligibility and account availability may change; check Twitch’s 2K announcement and the current Enhanced Broadcasting documentation for your account. Enhanced Broadcasting can configure multiple client-side encodes automatically, with settings that may vary by session to balance viewer experience, system performance and bandwidth.

Troubleshooting bitrate problems
- Stream disconnects or health warnings appear: check that the selected bitrate is within sustainable upload capacity, reduce video bitrate or output demands, and test again. A nominal broadband speed is not proof of stable upstream delivery.
- Video drops frames while the network appears stable: check encoder load. Try a supported hardware encoder or lower resolution, frame rate or other output demands; adding bitrate does not remedy an overloaded CPU or encoder.
- Picture quality looks poor despite a high bitrate: confirm you are using the correct platform-and-codec recommendation, and test representative motion. A higher bitrate alone cannot overcome a mismatched codec profile or encoding bottleneck.
- Settings differ from a Twitch guide: check whether the guide describes conventional broadcasting or Enhanced Broadcasting. The latter may automatically configure multiple encodes and is not the same as one fixed profile.
- Viewers report different playback quality: remember that YouTube transcodes the incoming stream into output renditions; viewer playback quality is not the same thing as your encoder’s ingest bitrate.
