First find out whether “dropped frames” is a warning from YouTube Live Control Room or a message from FFmpeg. They point to different parts of the stream path, and neither proves that FFmpeg’s looping option is the cause. Check the timestamped warning against FFmpeg’s output, encoder load, YouTube’s ingest settings and sustained upload before changing the command.
Identify where the dropped-frame report comes from
In YouTube Live Control Room, record the complete stream-health message, its timestamp and whether YouTube marks it critical or moderate. The dashboard checks the incoming stream and timestamps errors; red indicates critical errors and yellow indicates moderate ones. A report there is not automatically an FFmpeg error.
At the same time, inspect FFmpeg’s console output or saved log around that timestamp. Keep the exact command, FFmpeg version/build, source file properties and relevant log lines. Redact the stream key before sharing a command or log.
Follow the evidence: local output first, then ingest and network
If the picture or sound is already poor locally
Check the FFmpeg output or local preview and, if available, the local recording. YouTube recommends looking for encoder errors and high CPU load when the stream looks or sounds poor locally. Source/encoding trouble can include insufficient processing capacity or frame-timing behavior in the command. You can test another encoder as a diagnostic, but change one thing at a time so you can tell whether it mattered. YouTube’s live-stream troubleshooting guide covers these checks.

If local output is healthy but YouTube reports a problem
Check the outbound connection and compare the stream settings with YouTube’s current encoder guidance. YouTube advises testing outbound internet and contacting your provider if the connection test shows problems. Do not rely on a high average speed alone: observe sustained upload and whether the warning returns while streaming. Comparing sustained throughput with the configured stream bitrate is a practical diagnostic, not a YouTube guarantee or a published pass threshold.
The two branches can overlap. An overloaded encoder and an unstable or insufficient upload connection may both contribute, so a healthy result in one check does not rule out every other cause.

Match FFmpeg’s output to YouTube’s ingest settings
Compare the actual output—not just the source file—with the settings for the YouTube stream key. YouTube identifies incorrect bitrate, frame rate, resolution, format or keyframe frequency as possible causes of ingest or delivery problems. Its encoder settings page recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a two-second keyframe interval and no more than four seconds between keyframes. It supports up to 60 fps for RTMP/RTMPS. Consult the current table for the codec, resolution and frame rate you are sending; the recommendations can change. YouTube’s encoder settings and bitrate table.
| Example in YouTube’s current table | Recommended bitrate | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| H.264, 1080p at 30 fps | 14 Mbps | Recommendation for that codec and output mode; not a guarantee of available upload capacity. |
| H.264, 720p at 30 fps | 8 Mbps | Recommendation for that codec and output mode; not a universal setting for other resolutions, frame rates or codecs. |
Verify the video codec and format, output resolution and frame rate, video bitrate, audio format, keyframe cadence and that FFmpeg is sending to the intended stream key. Do not copy one bitrate into every command: select the matching row in YouTube’s current table.

Check file pacing and frame-rate conversion
Use real-time pacing for file playback when needed
When FFmpeg plays a file as a live stream, -re reads the input at its native frame rate. FFmpeg documents this as useful when output packet timing matters, including live streaming. It is an input option, so place it before the file input it is meant to pace. Do not add it indiscriminately to an actual capture device or live input: FFmpeg warns that a low read rate in that situation may cause packet loss. Check the documentation and option support for your installed build: FFmpeg documentation.
Inspect explicit frame-rate and synchronization options
A requested output rate or frame-sync mode can make FFmpeg duplicate or drop frames independently of a network problem. In constant-frame-rate (CFR) mode, FFmpeg may duplicate or drop frames to meet the requested rate. Variable-frame-rate (VFR) may drop frames to avoid duplicate timestamps, while passthrough retains demuxer timestamps. Review any -r setting and frame-sync option in the command before treating a count as evidence of network loss. The exact behavior depends on the command and installed FFmpeg build. Retest methodically
- Capture a baseline. Save the full FFmpeg command with the stream key redacted, FFmpeg version/build, source resolution and frame rate, timestamped FFmpeg log lines, and the exact YouTube warning.
- Check local quality and load. Note whether video and audio are clean in FFmpeg’s output or a local recording, and inspect CPU use and encoder errors around the warning.
- Check upload stability. Test the outbound connection and observe sustained throughput during a representative stream. If you are on Wi-Fi, a wired Ethernet connection can help isolate a local wireless-link problem; it cannot by itself fix ISP congestion, encoder overload or incorrect settings.
- Verify output settings. Match codec, format, resolution, frame rate, bitrate and keyframe interval to YouTube’s current guidance and the intended stream configuration.
- Audit timing options. Confirm whether a file input needs
-re, avoid applying low read-rate pacing to a genuine live input, and review explicit frame-rate conversion or synchronization choices. - Change one evidenced cause and test again. YouTube recommends a preflight test with movement and audio similar to the intended stream, followed by monitoring stream health during the event. Compare the same logs and warning timestamps after each change. YouTube’s encoder guidance and troubleshooting instructions provide the official checks.
Common symptoms and next checks
| What you observe | Likely area to investigate | Next check |
|---|---|---|
| Local video or audio is poor; FFmpeg reports encoding errors or CPU load is high. | Source or encoder path. | Inspect the source, encoder errors, CPU load and frame-rate/synchronization options; test another encoder only as a diagnostic. |
| Local output looks and sounds healthy, but YouTube shows an ingest or stream-health warning. | Connection or ingest configuration. | Check sustained outbound upload and compare bitrate, format, resolution, frame rate and keyframe interval with YouTube’s current guidance. |
| FFmpeg reports frame duplication or dropping after a target rate is set. | Frame-rate conversion or synchronization. | Review -r and the selected frame-sync behavior; determine whether the reported frames are a consequence of output-rate conversion. |
| A file-based loop is not paced as expected, or a live input is losing packets. | Input pacing. | Check where -re is placed and whether the input is a file or an actual live/capture source; avoid low read-rate pacing on the latter. |
What to include when asking for help
If the cause is still unclear, provide the exact FFmpeg command with the stream key removed, the installed version from ffmpeg -version, source resolution and frame rate, the relevant timestamped log lines, YouTube’s complete timestamped warning, and upload-test details. Without those specifics, a proposed change to -stream_loop, -re, -r, a codec preset or bitrate would be guesswork.
Or let it run in the cloud
If you are looping uploaded videos to keep a YouTube channel live, StreamNeo runs the stream from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. Upload your recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encode or quality tiers; it also includes automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, one free day per account. Monthly access costs $9.99 per month. StreamNeo is for uploaded videos and YouTube streams, not camera broadcasts.
