These checks can narrow down the cause, but none can fix an EA service problem or guarantee that every kind of stutter is network-related.
Why is FC 25 lagging online on Switch?
Online responsiveness depends on data traveling between your home network and an FC game data center. Electronic Arts explains that delays or interruptions along the way can cause lag, visual stuttering, or disconnection. Congestion, Wi-Fi conditions, router behavior, ISP routing, or an EA service issue may contribute; a symptom alone does not identify which one is responsible.
EA’s general FC connection guidance does not establish a confirmed FC 25 defect on Nintendo Switch. If the connection checks below look normal but the same problem occurs offline, the available guidance is not enough to attribute it to your network.
How to troubleshoot FC 25 multiplayer lag
- Check EA service status. If the problem began suddenly or Ultimate Team will not connect, check EA’s service status page and official outage updates before changing router settings. A successful Switch internet test does not establish that EA’s game service is healthy.
- Restart FC 25. Close the game completely and reopen it. EA notes that players may be connected to a different game data center than usual, so a restart is a sensible first check.
- Restart your network equipment. Turn off the router and, if separate, the modem. Wait at least 30 seconds before turning them back on. Follow the device maker’s instructions if your equipment has a specific restart procedure.
- Pause competing traffic. Stop large downloads and HD or 4K streaming while testing. Heavy use by other people sharing the connection can also affect play, according to EA.
- Run the Switch internet connection test. On the console, open System Settings > Internet > Test Connection. Note the displayed NAT type and upload/download speeds when shown. Nintendo recommends noting NAT type and speeds when a player can get online but has trouble connecting to others.
- Improve or compare the connection. Move the console nearer the router, reduce obstacles where practical, and compare the available Wi-Fi bands from the same playing location. If possible, test Ethernet as described below.
Choose between 2.4 GHz, 5 GHz, and Ethernet
| Connection | What to expect | Useful test |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi | Generally reaches farther, but EA describes it as generally slower and more prone to higher ping, packet loss, and jitter. | Try it if the console is farther from the router or 5 GHz coverage is weak. |
| 5 GHz Wi-Fi | Generally faster and more stable, but has shorter range, so distance and placement matter. | Try it near the router and compare results from your usual playing location. |
| Wired Ethernet | A useful way to reduce wireless interference and compare stability. It cannot fix an EA-side problem. | Test in docked TV mode where supported; if the result improves, Wi-Fi may be part of the issue. |
These are general tendencies, not guarantees for every router or home. The Switch connection test reports console internet details, but one speed result does not by itself identify packet loss, wireless interference, ISP routing, or a problem at EA’s data center.

Connect a docked Switch by Ethernet
The Nintendo Switch OLED dock includes a LAN port. A standard dock without a built-in LAN port needs a USB LAN adapter. Nintendo documents wired docked connections in TV mode; Switch Lite requires a compatible licensed accessory, such as the cited playstand arrangement. If you already use Ethernet and suspect the cable, try another cable.

If Wi-Fi and wired play behave differently, use that comparison to focus your next checks on the wireless connection. If both behave the same, the cause may lie elsewhere, including the ISP route or an EA service issue; the Switch test alone cannot distinguish these possibilities. For unresolved NAT or network problems, Nintendo advises contacting your ISP, network administrator, or router manufacturer.

EA also lists checking router firmware, testing with a VPN disconnected, and using router QoS prioritization among advanced troubleshooting options. Menus and behavior vary by router, so consult its manual or manufacturer rather than changing advanced settings blindly. No minimum internet speed or typical ping threshold for FC 25 on Switch is established in the cited support guidance.
