Start by checking for an Elden Ring update, then work through Xbox’s general crash troubleshooting: install console updates, fully power-cycle the console, check that it has room to ventilate, and reinstall the game only if the problem continues. These steps may help, but they cannot identify or guarantee a fix for the cause of a particular crash.
Update Elden Ring first
Bandai Namco’s Xbox-specific instructions say to look for an update from the console’s game management menu:
- From Home or My Collection > Games, highlight ELDEN RING.
- Press the Menu button and select Manage Games and Add-ons.
- Select Update if an update is available, then follow the console prompts.
Bandai Namco’s February 24, 2022 Version 1.02 notes said the publisher had started distributing a patch “to improve the stability of the gameplay” and listed fixes that included frame-rate drops under certain conditions. That is historical patch information, not evidence of a current Xbox crash bug or a fix for every crash: Version 1.02 patch notes.
Later notes show that the game continued to receive updates. Version 1.16, published in 2024, listed Xbox Series X|S among its platforms and described bug fixes; its stated performance caveats concerned PS5 and PC, not Xbox crash remedies: Version 1.16 patch notes. Version 1.16.1 notes dated August 21, 2025 list Xbox Series X|S and say the version number appears on the title screen; Xbox regulation files can be downloaded by signing in, and online play requires the update: Version 1.16.1 patch notes. Those notes are the newest relevant official update information cited here, but do not establish whether a later update is available now.

Try Xbox’s general crash troubleshooting
The following steps come from a general Xbox game-crash article published by Square Enix support, not from Elden Ring-specific guidance by Bandai Namco. Try them in order after checking for a game update.
Install console updates
Make sure your Xbox system software is up to date. Use the console’s update settings and install any available update, following the prompts. The support guidance recommends checking for console updates but does not specify a particular menu path.

Do a full power cycle
- With the console on, hold its front power button for 10 seconds, until it turns off.
- Unplug the power cable for 10 seconds.
- Reconnect the cable and start the console.
This is a full shutdown and restart, not just putting the console into sleep mode. The instructions are general Xbox troubleshooting guidance: Square Enix support: Xbox game crashes.
Check the console’s ventilation
Keep the console in a well-ventilated area, as the same general guidance recommends. Ventilation is a troubleshooting check, not a diagnosis: a crash alone does not show that overheating is the cause. The cited guidance does not establish that a cooling accessory will fix Elden Ring crashes.

Reinstall the game only if crashes continue
If updating the game and console, power-cycling, and checking ventilation have not helped, Square Enix’s general guidance recommends uninstalling and reinstalling the affected game. Reinstallation can take time, so leave it as an escalation step rather than the first thing to try. The guidance cited here does not explain Elden Ring save-data handling; do not delete saved data as part of this procedure.

- When the crash occurs, such as during startup, loading, or gameplay.
- Whether other games also crash on the same console.
- Any error message or code shown on screen.
Share those details with support rather than assuming the cause is a bad console, corrupted save, or known game bug.
