Start by checking ESO Service Alerts and, on Xbox or PlayStation, the platform’s service-status page. If ESO or the platform is down or under maintenance, local repairs are unlikely to help. If services are online, use the error message and platform to choose the next step: Error 201 is not a single-cause diagnosis, and PC/Mac and console fixes differ.
1. Check ESO and platform status first
Open the ESO Service Alerts page and look for your platform and megaserver. Console players should also check the relevant Xbox Live status or PlayStation Network status. ESO’s console support article says the “Login Failed” internal error usually occurs when Xbox or PlayStation megaservers face overwhelming demand; Error 201 can also result from a server-side login problem.
Service status changes quickly. The alert history visible in the material available on October 8, 2026, included entries dated through September 3, 2026, but those past notices do not establish whether ESO is available now. Check the live alert page rather than relying on an old incident notice or assuming a current outage.
2. Choose the fix that matches your platform and error
| Platform or message | What to do after checking service status | Official guidance |
|---|---|---|
| PC/Mac: Error 201, “Login service has failed” | Refresh the launcher, repair the game, and check security software and connectivity. | ESO Error 201 support |
| PC/Mac: Error 108, “Login Failed” | Check antivirus/firewall exceptions; consider port forwarding only after basic checks. | ESO Error 108 support |
| PC/Mac: “Unable to connect to game server. Please make sure you have a valid internet connection” | After confirming ESO is online, follow the PC/Mac network troubleshooting guidance. | ESO unable-to-connect support |
| PC/Mac: “The servers are offline/under maintenance” | Check alerts; if servers are online, try the launcher steps for this message. | ESO offline/maintenance support |
| Xbox or PlayStation: Error 301 | Check ESO and platform status, then power-cycle and test the network. | ESO console Error 301 support |
| Xbox: “unexpected internal error” | Check ESO status, then follow the Xbox cache and saved-data steps if services are online. | ESO Xbox internal-error support |
| Xbox or PlayStation: “Login Failed” internal error | Check platform status and megaserver behavior; provide platform details if contacting support. | ESO console Login Failed support |
3. PC/Mac troubleshooting when ESO is online
Error 201: “Login service has failed”
ESO lists several possible causes for Error 201: a server-side login problem, general connectivity trouble between your computer and ESO, or an outdated game client. The error alone does not identify which one applies. Work through the following in order:

- Check Service Alerts for your megaserver.
- Close and reopen the ESO launcher so it can check for and apply updates.
- Close unnecessary applications that may be using system or network resources.
- Use the launcher’s repair option to check and repair game files.
- Restart the computer.
- Check that your antivirus and firewall allow ESO. ESO’s instructions include adding the Zenimax Online folder as an antivirus exception; use the support page for the exact guidance applicable to your setup.
- If the problem appears network-related, consult the official support page about forwarding game ports and your router’s instructions. Do not treat port forwarding as the first diagnosis.
If connection problems persist after these checks, ESO’s Error 201 guidance points players to their internet service provider for help with ongoing network issues.
Error 108: “Login Failed”
For Error 108, check Service Alerts and official notices, then verify that antivirus and firewall settings are not blocking ESO. If those checks do not resolve the issue, the support article lists these ports for possible router forwarding: TCP/UDP 24100–24131, TCP/UDP 24500–24507, TCP/UDP 24300–24331, TCP 80, and TCP 433. Confirm the current ESO Error 108 instructions and router-specific steps before changing settings.

“Unable to connect to game server”
ESO says this message may indicate either a service interruption or a connection blocked somewhere between the computer and the game server. Check alerts first; only if ESO is active should you move on to the PC/Mac network steps in ESO’s connection guidance.
“The servers are offline/under maintenance”
Check Service Alerts. If ESO reports the servers online, the official steps for this PC/Mac message include running the launcher as administrator. If the problem continues, the support article describes deleting and reinstalling the launcher; follow its current instructions at ESO’s offline/maintenance support page.

4. Xbox and PlayStation troubleshooting
Error 301
ESO describes Error 301 as a failure to connect to its servers, most often associated with a service outage. First check both ESO and your console network’s status. If they are online, follow the console Error 301 steps, which include power-cycling the network equipment or console and testing the network connection. Port forwarding is a later option in the official guidance, not a substitute for checking service status.
Xbox “unexpected internal error”
After checking ESO status, if the servers are online, ESO recommends clearing the system cache and saved game data for this error. The support article says these steps do not remove character information or game progress. Follow the exact console-specific instructions at ESO Xbox internal-error support.
Rank #4
Console “Login Failed” internal error
If the issue remains, ESO’s general console guidance suggests changing megaservers to see whether the problem occurs on both. After switching, wait three minutes before attempting to log in; ESO warns that logging in sooner can trigger Error 103. If the problem persists, test the console’s network connection and contact ESO support with your megaserver, ISP, and Xbox Gamertag or PSN ID. See ESO’s console Login Failed instructions.
5. When to contact support
Contact ESO Support if the service pages show the game and platform online but the relevant troubleshooting steps do not resolve the login failure. Include the exact error text or number, platform, megaserver, and the checks you have already completed. Console players should include their ISP and Gamertag or PSN ID as requested in ESO’s console guidance. For persistent PC/Mac network problems, contact your ISP as well.
