Steam lists a four-core i5-6400/Ryzen 5 1500X-class processor, 16 GB of RAM and a 6 GB GTX 1060/RX 580-class graphics card (or Intel Arc A380) as the minimum for Windows 10. The recommended tier moves to an i7-8700/Ryzen 7 2700X-class CPU, 16 GB RAM and an RTX 2070 Super/RX 6700 XT (or Arc A770), with an SSD recommended and 60 GB of free space required. Use that baseline before spending money or changing dozens of settings.

First, identify what kind of slowdown you have
“Low FPS” can mean a consistently low average, brief stutters, pauses while the world streams, or drops that occur only in a busy settlement. Those symptoms point to different fixes. Watch the GPU and CPU utilization graphs in your normal hardware-monitoring tool while repeating the same route in the same world. Record the frame rate, frametime spikes and temperatures rather than relying on how a single fight feels.
| What you observe | Likely limit | Best first test |
|---|---|---|
| GPU stays near full utilization and lowering resolution raises FPS | Graphics processing or VRAM headroom | Reduce resolution or the most expensive quality options, then test upscaling |
| One or more CPU cores are saturated, especially in a large base, while GPU usage falls | Game-thread or simulation load | Test an uncrowded location, reduce view-distance or world-detail options if available, and close background CPU workloads |
| Regular hitching while turning or entering a new area, with a hard drive active | Asset streaming and storage latency | Move the installation to an SSD and leave free space for the operating system and game |
| Stutters began immediately after a patch or driver installation | Build or driver regression, shader recompilation, or changed defaults | Restart the game, retest, and check Keen Games’ current hot-fix notes |
| System uses more than available physical memory and begins paging | RAM capacity | Close applications and confirm you have at least 16 GB; upgrade if your normal session exhausts it |
No setting has a guaranteed FPS gain on every PC. Performance changes with the game build, world complexity, driver version and hardware, so treat each change as a controlled diagnostic rather than a promise.

Check the official Enshrouded hardware baseline
Steam’s Enshrouded listing (Valve and Keen Games, 2024) gives the following Windows requirements. The minimum is a floor for launch and playability, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate or visual preset.
| Component | Minimum | Recommended | What it means for troubleshooting |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operating system | Windows 10 | Windows 10 | Use a supported 64-bit Windows installation with current updates. |
| CPU | Four-core Intel Core i5-6400 or AMD Ryzen 5 1500X class | Intel Core i7-8700 or AMD Ryzen 7 2700X class | Dense bases and busy scenes can expose CPU limits even when the graphics card is not fully loaded. |
| Memory | 16 GB RAM | 16 GB RAM | Close browsers, launchers and recording tools when diagnosing paging or hitching. |
| GPU | Nvidia GTX 1060 or AMD RX 580 class with 6 GB VRAM, or Intel Arc A380 | Nvidia RTX 2070 Super or AMD RX 6700 XT, or Intel Arc A770 | Six gigabytes of VRAM is the stated minimum. More headroom helps at high resolutions and quality settings. |
| Storage | 60 GB available | SSD recommended | The 60 GB figure is required free capacity. An SSD improves loading and streaming behavior; it is not an automatic FPS upgrade. |
If your PC is below the minimum, prioritize a 6 GB-or-better GPU, 16 GB of RAM and SSD storage before buying small upgrades or chasing exotic settings. If it meets the minimum but not the recommended tier, expect to balance image quality and frame rate, particularly at 1440p or higher.

Use a clean, version-aware starting point
1. Record the versions before changing anything
Note the Enshrouded build shown by the launcher or title screen, your GPU driver version and the date the problem started. Also record your GPU model and VRAM, CPU, installed RAM, Windows version and whether the game is on an SSD or hard drive. This information lets you distinguish a long-standing hardware limit from a regression.
2. Update Enshrouded and the graphics driver
Install the latest game update available to you, then install the current driver for your Nvidia, AMD or Intel GPU from the manufacturer. Restart Windows after the driver installation and launch the game again. Keen Games’ Hotfix #27 specifically updated the recommended Nvidia driver to the latest release because it improved stability on RTX 50-series hardware. That does not mean every driver is faster for every card; it means driver version is part of the diagnosis.

- Gen 4x4 NVMe PCle performance
- Up to 6,000MB/s read, 4,000MB/s write
- Includes Acronis cloning software

3. Restart and allow one normal loading cycle
After a patch or driver change, fully exit Enshrouded rather than returning only to the main menu. Reboot if the driver installer requests it. Load the same world and repeat your test route once the initial asset and shader work has settled. Compare several minutes, not the first few seconds after entering a save.
4. Repair the installation if files may be damaged
In Steam, use the game’s Properties menu and the installed-files option to verify the integrity of the installation. Let Steam replace missing or damaged files, then restart the game. This can correct crashes or unexplained behavior caused by an incomplete update, but it cannot make hardware that is below the requirements perform like the recommended tier.

Tune a GPU-limited system without guessing
Lower the render workload in a controlled order
- Keep a repeatable test location and camera route. Take a baseline reading at your usual resolution and quality settings.
- Lower output resolution one step, or reduce the overall quality preset if the game provides one. If FPS rises substantially, the GPU is doing the limiting work.
- Reduce the individual options that affect the number of pixels or objects drawn, such as shadows, volumetric effects, reflections, foliage and view distance, testing one group at a time. The exact labels and available ranges can change between builds.
- Apply the change, reload the same scene if necessary, and record the new average and worst frametime. Keep a setting only when the visual trade-off is acceptable.
Do not lower every option at once: you will not know which change helped, and you may sacrifice image quality unnecessarily. A GPU that is already below full utilization will not gain much from further quality reductions.
Test Enshrouded’s upscaling options
Update #3 added FSR3. In the graphics settings, test the available upscaling mode at the resolution you actually want to play. Use the same route for each mode and compare clarity, shimmering and frame pacing as well as the displayed FPS. Upscaling can reduce the internal rendering workload when the GPU is the bottleneck; it cannot remove a CPU limit, storage hitch or server-related issue. If a mode introduces distracting artifacts or uneven frame pacing, use a lower native resolution or a different quality setting instead.

Watch VRAM and temperatures
The official minimum calls for 6 GB of VRAM. If your card is at or below that capacity, high textures and resolution can force data to move between VRAM and system memory, producing hitching even when the average FPS looks acceptable. Lower texture quality or resolution and close other GPU-accelerated applications. Check temperatures and clock speeds during the test; a card that is overheating and reducing its clock can look like a software problem.
Handle CPU-limited drops in bases and busy scenes
Enshrouded can feel smooth in the wilderness and slow in a heavily built or populated base. That pattern usually means the simulation or game thread is limiting the frame rate. Lowering resolution will have little effect when the GPU is waiting for the CPU.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11- Compare the same camera movement in an empty area and your busiest base. A large difference confirms that scene complexity matters.
- Close browsers, video encoders, hardware-monitoring overlays and other programs that consume CPU time while you test.
- Use the game’s view-distance, object-detail or crowd-related controls if present, changing one at a time. Keep the setting that improves the busy scene without making the world look unnecessarily sparse.
- Check that Windows power management is not holding the CPU in a low-power state during play, and make sure the system is not thermal-throttling.
A faster graphics card will not cure a saturated game thread. If your processor is below the recommended i7-8700/Ryzen 7 2700X class and the drops occur only in dense builds, a CPU or platform upgrade is a more direct solution than increasing GPU power.
Reduce memory and background pressure
Both minimum and recommended specifications list 16 GB of RAM. That is enough for the stated baseline, but the game shares memory with Windows, browsers, voice chat, recording software and mods or utilities. Before testing, close unnecessary applications and disable overlays you do not need. If Windows reports heavy paging or memory usage remains near capacity throughout a session, adding RAM can reduce hitching; it does not guarantee a higher average FPS when the GPU or CPU is the real limit.

Keep the page file managed by Windows unless you have a specific, measured reason to change it. An unusually small or disabled page file can turn a recoverable memory spike into a crash, but increasing it is not a substitute for adequate physical RAM.
Move the game to an SSD when streaming is the problem
Steam recommends an SSD and requires 60 GB of free storage. A hard drive can make loading and asset streaming slower, especially when you turn quickly or travel into an unexplored area. Moving the installation to an SSD is therefore an honest upgrade for reducing load-time pauses and streaming hitching. It should not be advertised as a universal FPS increase: once assets are in memory, the GPU and CPU determine most frame-rate limits.
Leave additional free space for Windows, updates and shader caches rather than filling a drive to its limit. A 1 TB NVMe SSD gives substantial working room for the game and other software, but choose capacity and interface based on your system’s available M.2 or SATA connections. Confirm the game is actually installed on the new drive after moving it in Steam’s storage manager.

If the slowdown appeared on a specific date, treat it as a regression until proven otherwise. Capture the build number and driver version, restart the game, verify files and repeat your controlled test. Then read the current Keen Games hot-fix index for issues matching your GPU family or symptom. The index records later fixes in 2025–2026 for RTX 50-series terrain-rendering glitches, crashes and other technical problems, so advice written for an older build may no longer apply.

Update #3 documented three relevant improvements: better stability and performance on lower hardware and Steam Deck, the addition of FSR3, and fixes for short freezes on faster graphics cards. Those notes show that some stutters are software defects rather than settings mistakes. Do not keep lowering quality indefinitely when the symptom matches a known issue; install the corrective build and retest first.

- Choose one save, location and route that reproduces the slowdown. Include the busy base or area where the problem is most obvious.
- Stand still for 30 seconds, then repeat the same camera movement and traversal for several minutes.
- Record average FPS, the lowest sustained result and frametime spikes, along with GPU utilization, VRAM, CPU utilization, RAM use, temperatures and clock speeds.
- Change one variable—resolution, quality group, upscaling mode, driver or storage—then repeat the route under similar conditions.
- Keep the change only if it improves the troublesome scene without creating unacceptable image quality, input latency or frame-pacing problems.
Because no authoritative source publishes a universal FPS uplift for a particular Enshrouded setting, your own before-and-after measurement is the reliable way to judge a fix.
Decide whether an upgrade is justified
| Situation | Most relevant upgrade or action | What it can and cannot solve |
|---|---|---|
| GPU is full, VRAM is constrained and lowering resolution helps | Move toward a GPU with at least 6 GB VRAM; the recommended-class RTX 2070 Super/RX 6700 XT/Arc A770 gives more headroom | Raises rendering capacity; it will not fix a CPU-bound base or a game regression. |
| 16 GB is exhausted and Windows pages during play | Add system RAM | Reduces memory-related hitching; average FPS may remain unchanged if the GPU is limiting. |
| Hitches correlate with loading areas from a hard drive | Move Enshrouded to an SSD, with adequate free space | Improves loading and streaming responsiveness, not guaranteed frame rate. |
| CPU is saturated only in dense bases | Reduce scene-detail options or consider a faster CPU/platform | Addresses simulation and game-thread limits; a faster GPU alone may not help. |
| Issue began after a patch or driver | Check the matching hot-fix notes and use the current recommended driver | Can resolve a documented regression; do not assume older settings advice remains valid. |
Send a useful report when troubleshooting fails
Keen Games asks players with continuing issues to contact support. Send a concise, reproducible report rather than only saying “low FPS.” Include:
- Enshrouded build number and the date the issue began.
- GPU model and VRAM, CPU model, total RAM, Windows version and whether the game is on an SSD or hard drive.
- Graphics-driver version and whether the problem started after changing it.
- The world or location, approximate base size or scene conditions, settings, resolution and upscaling mode.
- What you changed, the before-and-after measurements, and exact steps that reproduce the drop or freeze.
- Crash logs, screenshots or a short recording when they demonstrate the problem.
This information lets the developer separate a reproducible build issue from a system-specific bottleneck and apply the appropriate fix.
Practical order of operations
For most players, the shortest sensible path is: update the game; install the current GPU driver; restart; verify files; compare the PC with the official table; measure a repeatable scene; lower resolution or quality and test upscaling if the GPU is full; investigate CPU, RAM and storage when those counters point elsewhere; then check the hot-fix index and contact Keen Games with a complete report. That order prevents expensive upgrades for a software regression and prevents endless setting changes on hardware that simply falls below the stated baseline.
