ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED means Chrome’s connection to a website was closed before the page finished loading. It is a loading failure, not a diagnosis of one particular component. The quickest way to find the cause is to test another website and the same URL in another browser, then work from Chrome settings outward to Windows networking. The sequence below starts with reversible checks and reserves Windows 10’s Network reset for last.
What ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED means
Chrome lists err_connection_closed among “This webpage is not available” errors. The message can be produced by the website, your router or modem, Windows network settings, a proxy or VPN, firewall or antivirus rules, Chrome extensions, corrupted browsing data, hardware-acceleration behavior, or a damaged Chrome installation. Because the message does not identify the failing layer, troubleshooting must first establish the error’s scope.

A site that closes a connection for everyone is a different problem from a Chrome-only failure on one Windows 10 PC. Treat the first tests as diagnosis rather than random fixes.
First determine whether the problem is Chrome, the website, or the network
- Reload the address. Use Chrome’s reload button or press
Ctrl+R. A one-time interruption can clear without further action. - Open a second, unrelated website. If only one domain fails while other sites load, that site may be unavailable or filtering the connection. If several sites fail, continue with network checks.
- Try the same URL in Microsoft Edge or Firefox. If it works there, the network and website are less likely to be the cause and Chrome-specific repairs should come first. If every browser fails, focus on the router, Windows, security software, proxy, DNS, or TCP/IP configuration.
- Test another device on the same connection. A failure on every device points toward the modem/router or service; a failure only on this PC points toward Windows or Chrome.
| Observed pattern | Most likely layer | Start with | Disruption |
|---|---|---|---|
| One website fails in every browser | Website availability or filtering | Retry later and check another site | Minimal |
| Many websites fail in every browser on this PC | Router, firewall/antivirus, proxy, DNS, or TCP/IP | Restart equipment, review blockers, then reset networking | Low to high |
| Chrome fails but Edge or Firefox works | Extension, browsing data, Chrome setting, acceleration, or installation | Disable extensions and clear data | Low |
| All devices fail on the same router | Modem/router or internet service | Restart the modem/router and check its connection | Low |
Restart the simple layers first
These actions are recommended first because they remove temporary state without changing your configuration.

- Quit Chrome completely. Close all Chrome windows. Reopen it and load the page again.
- Restart Windows 10. A restart can clear a stuck network process or temporary resolver state.
- Restart the modem and router. Unplug the power from both units, wait for them to shut down, reconnect the modem, allow it to settle, then reconnect the router. Wait until its normal connection lights return before testing Chrome.
If the error returns immediately and another browser still works, skip repeated router restarts and move to Chrome repairs. If all browsers and devices remain offline, continue with the network sections.
Repair Chrome when another browser works
Disable extensions
An extension can intercept requests, rewrite addresses, or apply filtering that closes a connection. To test this layer, open Chrome’s menu (the three dots) and choose Extensions > Manage extensions. Turn off every extension, close and reopen Chrome, and test the failing page.
If the error disappears, turn extensions on one at a time and reload after each change. The extension that brings the error back is the likely trigger; remove it or check its publisher for an update. If disabling all extensions changes nothing, leave them off while you continue so they do not obscure later tests.

Clearing cookies signs you out of sites and may remove saved site preferences. After the cleanup, close Chrome, reopen it, and enter the address manually rather than relying on a stale tab. If only one site is affected, you can first remove data for that site instead of clearing everything; if the error affects many sites, a broader cleanup is a more useful test.
Check hardware acceleration
Chrome’s hardware-acceleration setting can interact badly with some graphics drivers or system configurations. Open Settings > System and find Use hardware acceleration when available. Change the setting, select Relaunch when Chrome offers it, and test the page. If the change makes no difference, restore the original setting after testing so you do not leave an unrelated configuration change in place.
Reset Chrome settings
If extensions and browsing data were not responsible, reset Chrome’s settings. Go to Settings > Reset settings and choose Restore settings to their original defaults, then confirm. This resets items such as the startup page, new-tab behavior, search engine, and pinned tabs; it does not delete bookmarks or saved passwords. Extensions and other customizations may be disabled, so record any settings you need before confirming.

Reinstall Chrome only after the earlier checks
Use a reinstall when Chrome remains the only failing browser and resetting settings has not helped. In Windows 10, open Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Google Chrome, choose Uninstall, and follow the prompts. Reinstall Chrome from Google’s official download source using another browser. A reinstall replaces the program files; it will not repair a router, proxy, firewall rule, or Windows TCP/IP problem, so it is not the right first move when every browser fails.
Check Windows security and connection blockers
Review firewall and antivirus permissions
Windows Firewall or third-party antivirus software can block Chrome after an update or a rule change. Open the security product’s application or firewall rules and verify that Chrome is allowed to make outbound connections on the network types you use. In Windows Security, the firewall controls are under Firewall & network protection.
Do not leave protection disabled as a “fix.” If you temporarily pause a security product for a controlled test, re-enable it immediately and add an appropriate allow rule instead. A browser that works only while protection is paused indicates a rule or filtering conflict that should be corrected in that product.

Remove an unintended proxy or VPN setting
An old proxy or VPN configuration can close connections before Chrome reaches the website. In Windows 10, open Settings > Network & Internet > Proxy. Turn off a manually configured proxy you do not recognize. If you intentionally use a proxy for work or school, obtain the correct values from the administrator rather than deleting them.

Disconnect a VPN and test again. VPN software can install its own network adapter and filtering rules; if the connection works only when the VPN is disconnected, review that VPN’s server, protocol, and split-tunneling settings. Reconnect it after testing if it is required for your work.

When multiple browsers fail on this PC, reset the common Windows networking components. These commands require administrator rights and can interrupt current connections.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Run each command separately, pressing Enter after each one:
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
ipconfig /flushdns
netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset
ipconfig /release drops the current address, and ipconfig /renew requests a new one from the router. ipconfig /flushdns clears the DNS client resolver cache. netsh winsock reset rebuilds the Winsock catalog used by applications, while netsh int ip reset resets TCP/IP parameters.
Recommended Free Tools
Read the command results for errors. Restart Windows after the resets, reconnect to the network if necessary, and test both the previously failing URL and another website. If the commands report that a component could not be reset, note the exact message rather than repeatedly running the same sequence.

Restart the modem or router when the failure is network-wide
If Edge, Firefox, and Chrome all fail, and another device on the same connection also cannot load pages, the router or modem is the likely common point. Power-cycle both units as described earlier and check whether the service indicator returns to its normal state.
When only one website fails across all browsers, restarting networking will not make that site available if its own server is down or filtering your connection. Likewise, replacing an Ethernet cable, Wi-Fi adapter, or router is not an established remedy for this Chrome message unless separate testing demonstrates a hardware fault.
Use Windows 10 Network reset as the last resort
Network reset removes installed network adapters and their settings, restarts the PC, and reinstalls the adapters. Because it is disruptive, use it only after browser repairs, blocker checks, router troubleshooting, and the command-line resets.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Open Settings > Network & Internet > Status.
- Select Network reset.
- Read the warning, choose Reset now, and confirm.
- Allow Windows to restart and reconnect to Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Re-enter the network password if Windows asks for it.
Network reset can remove custom adapter settings. VPN clients may need to be configured again, and Hyper-V virtual switches may need to be recreated. Record any static IP, DNS, VPN, or virtual-network settings before using the reset so you can restore them afterward.
How to choose the next fix
| Fix | Scope addressed | Reversibility | When to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reload, restart Chrome, restart Windows | Temporary browser or system state | Fully reversible | Always first |
| Disable extensions or change acceleration | Chrome-only behavior | Easy to reverse | Another browser loads the page |
| Clear browsing data or reset Chrome | Corrupt site data or settings | Preferences must be restored | Chrome fails while other browsers work |
| Review firewall, antivirus, proxy, or VPN | Local connection blockers | Rule changes can be reversed | Several sites fail on this PC |
| Winsock, TCP/IP, IP, and DNS commands | Windows networking stack | Requires restart; settings may change | Every browser fails on this PC |
| Network reset | Adapters and their Windows settings | Most disruptive | Last resort after other network repairs |
Windows 10 support status matters
Microsoft states that after October 14, 2025, it will no longer provide free software updates from Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. That end-of-support status does not itself cause ERR_CONNECTION_CLOSED, but it limits future troubleshooting and security maintenance. If the error persists after the steps above, moving the PC to a supported Windows release, where hardware and application compatibility allow, is a longer-term maintenance decision rather than an immediate Chrome repair.
When the error still returns
Use the scope tests again after each major change: load a second website, try the URL in another browser, and test another device on the same connection. Those comparisons prevent you from repeatedly changing Chrome when the website or router is responsible. If one site remains unavailable everywhere, contact that site’s operator or network administrator. If every device loses access, contact the internet provider or router manufacturer. If only this Windows 10 installation fails after a Network reset, document the command output and security, proxy, VPN, and adapter changes before seeking technical support.
