What’s actually slowing this PC down?

ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE means Chrome received no usable data from the requested page. It is not a diagnosis of one specific fault. First determine whether only one website fails or whether several do. A single-site failure points toward that site’s hosting or application; failures across many sites point toward your device, network, browser, or security software.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
Use the least disruptive checks first: verify the address, reload, test another site, try Incognito, and check the connection. If you own the website, move quickly to hosting status, timestamped server and application logs, DNS and TLS settings, reverse-proxy rules, and resource usage. WordPress sites also require plugin, theme, loopback, and security-rule checks.

Google Chrome Help describes the message as: “ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE: The page didn’t send any data and might be down.” In practical terms, the browser connected far enough to receive no usable response body. Chrome treats this as different from a DNS error, a timeout, a connection reset, or a connection-refused error.
The message does not identify whether the fault is in Chrome, the device, the network, a firewall, the web server, an application, or a reverse proxy. Scope is therefore the first diagnostic test:

- Only one website fails: the affected site’s hosting, server, application, DNS, TLS, or security configuration becomes the leading area to investigate.
- Many websites fail: investigate the local connection, Wi-Fi or Ethernet, router, ISP, Chrome, antivirus, firewall, or device resources.
Do not assume that a page working for another person proves your browser is healthy, or that an error on your own site proves the server is down. Record what works, what fails, and which network you used before changing settings.
Use this triage order before changing settings
| Observation | Most likely layer to examine first | Access normally needed | Safest first evidence |
|---|---|---|---|
| One URL fails while other sites load | That site’s hosting, web server, application, DNS, TLS, or proxy | Visitor access for basic tests; hosting or server access for diagnosis | Exact URL, time of failure, browser result, and whether another network succeeds |
| Several unrelated sites fail | Device, browser, security software, router, Wi-Fi/Ethernet, or ISP | Visitor access | Results from another website, Incognito, and another connection |
| The page works in Incognito | Chrome extension or stored browser state | Browser settings | Incognito result, then extension-by-extension testing |
| The page fails for visitors and server tools show an empty reply | Web server, application, proxy, or exhausted resources | Hosting, FTP/SFTP, or server administration | Timestamped server logs and the documented curl: (52) Empty reply from server result |
| Only a WordPress site fails | Plugin, theme, loopback, firewall, DNS, SSL, or HTTP-authentication rules | WordPress dashboard or FTP/SFTP | Plugin/theme changes correlated with the first failure and loopback results |
This order deliberately favors reversible actions. Incognito and temporary extension disablement are safer than changing DNS, proxy, firewall, or server configuration without evidence.
Fixes for visitors: work from the browser outward
1. Confirm the URL and the scope
- Check the spelling of the address, including the domain, path, and HTTPS prefix.
- Reload the page once. If the failure is temporary, a fresh request may succeed.
- Open a separate, unrelated website. If it loads, the problem is more likely limited to the original site. If it also fails, continue with local and network checks.
- If possible, try the same URL on a different connection, such as mobile data instead of Wi-Fi. A successful result on one connection narrows the fault to the other network path or its security controls; it does not by itself identify the precise cause.
Keep the exact time and network used for each test. A site owner can match that time to server and proxy logs.
2. Restore a healthy connection
- Confirm that Wi-Fi is connected or that the Ethernet cable is seated. If the device reports limited connectivity, resolve that before focusing on Chrome.
- Restart the modem and router, then wait for the connection to return before testing again.
- On public Wi-Fi, open a normal webpage and complete the network’s sign-in or acceptance portal. An incomplete portal session can prevent normal browsing.
- If unrelated sites continue to fail after the restart, contact your internet service provider. Give the provider the times of failure and whether another network worked.
Do not purchase networking hardware merely because this message appeared. The error can originate at several layers, and the scope tests above are needed before any equipment decision.

3. Separate Chrome from extensions
- Update Chrome if an update is available, then fully close and reopen it.
- Open the failing URL in an Incognito window. Incognito provides a quick comparison with a reduced set of stored browsing state and normally disabled extensions.
- If the page works in Incognito, return to a normal window and disable extensions. Re-enable them one at a time, testing the URL after each change, until the conflicting extension is identified.
- Leave the offending extension disabled, remove it, or check its own settings before re-enabling it.
If the page fails identically in both normal and Incognito windows while other devices can load it, browser extensions are less likely to be the cause. Continue with the connection and website-owner branches instead of repeatedly reinstalling Chrome.
4. Clear Chrome’s local state
When an extension test does not explain the failure, delete browsing data that includes cookies and cached files, then retry the page. Clearing this data signs you out of sites and removes locally stored content, so save any needed account details first.
After clearing the data, restart Chrome and test again. If only one site still fails while other sites work, the result is useful evidence for that site’s administrator rather than a reason to keep deleting local files.
5. Check security software and device resources
- Review firewall and antivirus notifications for a blocked browser or domain. Temporarily disabling protection can help isolate a block, but restore protection immediately after the test and use the product’s allow-list or policy controls only when you understand the consequence.
- Close unneeded applications and tabs if Chrome is under memory pressure. Freeing device memory can remove failures caused by local resource exhaustion.
- Test again after the change and record whether the result differs in normal Chrome and Incognito.
If security software is managed by an employer, school, or public network, you may not have permission to change it. Provide the administrator with the URL, time, and observed scope instead.

When you own the website: prove where the empty reply occurs
Once unrelated sites load and the failure is reproducible for your domain, stop treating it as a generic browser problem. Check the service status supplied by your host, then collect evidence before restarting services or editing configuration.
Check hosting and server health
- Look for a hosting outage, maintenance event, suspended service, or resource limit affecting the account or instance.
- Review web-server and application logs at the exact times shown in your browser tests. Look for requests that begin but end without a response, process crashes, worker exhaustion, rejected upstream connections, or abrupt proxy termination.
- Check resource exhaustion: CPU, memory, process or worker limits, storage, and any application-level quotas visible in your hosting panel. Record the observed limit and time rather than assuming that a restart fixed the underlying condition.
cPanel documentation describes this browser error alongside curl: (52) Empty reply from server. That output is evidence that the server-side request returned no data; it is not, by itself, a root cause. cPanel notes that a qualified system or network administrator may be needed to determine the proper solution.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsVerify DNS, TLS, and proxy paths
- Confirm that DNS records point to the intended service and that recent DNS changes have reached the networks from which the failure is reported.
- Check the TLS certificate, hostname coverage, certificate chain, and listener configuration for the HTTPS endpoint. A TLS problem can present differently from an empty response, so compare the browser result with server and proxy logs rather than guessing.
- Inspect reverse-proxy rules, upstream targets, health checks, and timeout or header policies. A proxy that accepts a request but receives nothing usable from the upstream application can leave the browser with an empty reply.
Make one controlled change at a time and retain the previous configuration. A timestamped before-and-after record makes it possible to correlate a fix with the logs and to roll back an unsuccessful change.
Capture a useful incident record
- Write down the complete URL, protocol, client network, browser version, device, and UTC time.
- Repeat the request from a second network or device when available.
- Save the Chrome result and any server-side diagnostic output, including the exact
curl: (52) Empty reply from servertext if it appears. - Match the timestamp against web-server, application, proxy, DNS, and hosting-status records.
- Escalate to the host or system administrator with this evidence, not only a screenshot of the error.
This approach distinguishes a request that never reached the service from one that reached it and produced no body, and it prevents a successful restart from hiding a recurring capacity or configuration fault.

WordPress-specific recovery
WordPress adds several application-level causes to the server and browser possibilities. A plugin, active theme, loopback request, or security rule can prevent the site from completing its own request even when the hosting account appears online.
Test plugins individually
From the WordPress dashboard, deactivate plugins one at a time and retest the failing URL after each change. When the error disappears, the last plugin changed is the strongest lead; verify by reactivating other plugins and testing again before leaving the suspected plugin disabled.
If the dashboard is inaccessible, use FTP or SFTP to disable a plugin temporarily by changing its plugin directory name. Restore the original name after testing unless the plugin is confirmed as the cause. Coordinate this change with anyone else administering the site.
Test the active theme
Switch temporarily to a standard, maintained theme and retry the page. If the response returns, inspect the original theme’s recent changes, custom code, and integrations. Keep a record of the previous theme so the test is reversible.

Investigate loopback and security rules
- Check whether WordPress loopback requests fail. WordPress uses these self-requests for site functions, and a failure can reveal a block that an ordinary external visit does not make obvious.
- Review firewall rules, DNS resolution, SSL settings, and HTTP-authentication requirements that could prevent the site from requesting its own URL.
- Where a security layer, staging restriction, or basic-authentication rule is intentional, confirm that it permits the required internal request without weakening protection globally.
After each plugin, theme, or rule test, inspect the application and web-server logs at the same time. WordPress changes are clues to correlate with evidence, not proof that the changed component was the only fault.
Why a site can work on mobile but fail on Wi-Fi
This pattern usually means the two tests are taking different network paths. Mobile data may avoid a faulty router, a public Wi-Fi sign-in requirement, a local DNS result, or a network security policy affecting the Wi-Fi connection. Conversely, a mobile carrier may reach a different server address or proxy path.
Repeat the test with the same URL, note whether the phone is on Wi-Fi or cellular data, and record the times. If cellular data works while Wi-Fi fails, restart the router, complete any Wi-Fi portal, and test another device on that Wi-Fi. If every device on Wi-Fi fails but cellular data works, provide the ISP or network administrator with those comparative results. If both networks fail, return to the website-owner checks.
Choose the next remedy by scope and access
| Remedy | Scope addressed | Layer | Access required | Reversibility | Evidence it provides |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Reload and test another site | One site versus many | Browser and network observation | Visitor only | Fully reversible | Whether the failure is isolated |
| Incognito test | Local browser state | Browser | Visitor only | Fully reversible | Whether normal-window state or extensions are implicated |
| Disable extensions one at a time | Local browser conflicts | Browser | Visitor only | Reversible | The extension whose state changes the result |
| Clear cookies and cache | Corrupt or stale local state | Browser and device | Visitor only | Not fully reversible for deleted local data | Whether a clean local session changes the result |
| Router restart and portal sign-in | One network or all devices on it | Network | Network access | Usually reversible | Whether the local path recovers |
| Hosting, server, and application log review | Visitors to your site | Server and application | Hosting or administrator access | No configuration change | What happened at the request timestamp |
| WordPress plugin or theme isolation | One WordPress installation | Application | Dashboard or FTP/SFTP | Reversible when recorded | Whether a component changes the response |
Common failure patterns and the correct branch
Only your website fails for you and for other people
Confirm the URL from a second network, then treat the hosting, server, application, DNS, TLS, and proxy checks as primary. Send the owner or host the exact time and URL. Repeatedly clearing your cache is unlikely to repair a server-side empty reply.
Every website fails in Chrome, but another browser works
Update and restart Chrome, test Incognito, disable extensions, clear browsing data, and inspect firewall or antivirus blocks. If the alternate browser also fails, the problem is broader than Chrome.
The site works in Incognito but not normal Chrome
Disable extensions and re-enable them individually. If no extension explains it, clear cookies and cache and retest. Preserve the successful Incognito result when reporting the issue because it identifies a local-state difference.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

The WordPress dashboard and public site both fail
Use FTP/SFTP to isolate plugins and switch the theme temporarily, while the hosting administrator checks logs, resources, DNS, TLS, proxy rules, and loopback behavior. Do not make several changes at once; you will lose the ability to identify the trigger.
Quick Recap
Prevent repeat incidents
- Keep a short incident log with URL, UTC timestamp, network, device, browser result, and any server or application message.
- Before changing DNS, TLS, proxy, plugin, theme, or firewall settings, save the current configuration and define a rollback.
- After a fix, retest from the original failing network and from a second network.
- For WordPress, document plugin and theme changes and periodically verify that loopback, DNS, SSL, and authentication rules still permit required site requests.
- Escalate persistent local failures to the ISP, network administrator, or security-software administrator; escalate persistent site-wide failures to the host or system administrator with timestamped evidence.
