How to Fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED on Your Website

A practical, evidence-based guide to diagnosing ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED: scope the failure, verify authoritative DNS and CNAMEs, compare public resolvers, clear local state, and wait for TTLs after corrections.

ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means the hostname your browser requested did not resolve to a usable IP address. Start by checking the exact domain or subdomain, then verify its authoritative DNS records, CNAME target, and registrar nameserver delegation. Compare the result from several public resolvers to determine whether the fault is local or affects the domain everywhere. Once you correct DNS, cached answers and TTLs can delay the visible recovery.

What ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED means

Chrome describes this error as: “The hostname (web address) doesn’t exist or now has a different IP address.” In practical terms, the browser asked DNS for an address for a hostname such as example.com or www.example.com, but the lookup returned no usable answer. Cloudflare lists the same browser message among DNS failures.

DNS is the directory that maps names to destinations. An apex domain (the bare name, such as example.com) may use an A record for an IPv4 address, an AAAA record for IPv6, or another supported arrangement. A subdomain such as www.example.com or blog.example.com normally has its own A, AAAA, or CNAME record. If the requested name is misspelled, the record is absent, the CNAME chain is broken, or the domain is delegated to the wrong nameservers, the browser cannot find the site.

Two DNS systems are involved. Your device usually asks a recursive resolver operated by an ISP, company, router, or public DNS service. That resolver then asks the domain’s authoritative nameservers, which hold the zone data. A browser error can therefore come from the zone itself, from delegation to the wrong authoritative servers, or from a stale or unreachable recursive resolver. Identifying which layer is failing keeps you from changing a correct record unnecessarily.

First, scope the failure

Do not change DNS before establishing which hostname fails and whether the problem is limited to one connection.

  1. Copy the exact hostname. Record the complete name from the address bar, including whether it is the apex or a subdomain. A typo in one label can create the same error as a deleted DNS record.
  2. Try another device or network. Test from a phone on mobile data, a different Wi-Fi connection, or another computer. If other websites also fail, investigate the local connection or resolver first. If only this hostname fails, continue with the domain checks below.
  3. Test both intended hostnames. If visitors use example.com and www.example.com, test each separately. They can have different records and different failure causes.
  4. Write down the time and network. Note whether the test came from home, an office, mobile data, a VPN, or a filtered network. This makes it easier to recognize a resolver-specific pattern after you make a change.

This simple split prevents a local DNS outage from being mistaken for a broken domain and prevents a single mistyped subdomain from sending you into unrelated network troubleshooting. If every website fails on one connection, repair that connection before editing your zone. If several independent networks fail only for your hostname, proceed as if the domain or its delegation is at fault.

Check spelling and the records your site requires

Confirm the apex and every active subdomain

Review the hostname character by character. Check hyphens, doubled letters, the top-level domain, and any prefix such as www, app, or blog. A nonexistent subdomain will not resolve merely because the apex domain works.

Open the DNS control panel that is authoritative for the domain and confirm that each name visitors are expected to use has the required record. Cloudflare identifies mistyped domains or subdomains and missing DNS records as common causes. The record must be in the service that actually answers for the domain, not in an inactive or old DNS dashboard.

Make an inventory before changing anything: the apex, www, application hosts, mail-related names if relevant to your service, and any provider-specific hostname. Mark which entries are A, AAAA, or CNAME records. This prevents a migration from restoring the main page while leaving an active subdomain broken.

Verify A and AAAA records

An A record should contain the intended IPv4 address. An AAAA record should contain the intended IPv6 address when your host supports IPv6. Check for accidental deletions, an address belonging to an old server, or a record attached to a different hostname. If your hosting provider gave you a specific destination, copy it exactly rather than relying on memory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If both A and AAAA records exist, verify both destinations. A visitor using IPv6 can experience a failure even while an IPv4-only test appears healthy when the AAAA record points to an old or unconfigured server. If the provider does not support IPv6, do not invent an AAAA value; use the record types specified in its instructions.

Verify CNAME records

A CNAME makes one hostname an alias of another. Confirm that the CNAME exists on the authoritative nameservers, that its target is spelled correctly, and that the target itself resolves. A CNAME pointing to a removed or misspelled target produces a broken chain even though the alias record appears in the control panel. Follow the chain until it reaches a hostname with a valid address.

Some DNS providers do not allow a CNAME at the zone apex, while others offer provider-specific alias records. Use the record type and placement required by your hosting service. When DNS is managed by a hosting partner, make the change in that partner’s DNS control plane; editing a different provider’s zone will not affect public lookups.

Do not place an A or AAAA record and a CNAME for the same hostname unless the provider explicitly documents a compatible feature. Conflicting entries can make the published result differ from what you expect in the dashboard. Check the host-label field as well as the target field: entering the full domain where a panel expects only www, or vice versa, can create the wrong name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check registrar delegation and authoritative nameservers

The registrar tells the rest of the internet which nameservers are authoritative for your domain. After registering a domain, moving hosts, or changing DNS providers, the registrar may still delegate to the old nameservers. In that situation, the records you see in a new dashboard are irrelevant because public resolvers are asking a different service for the answer.

  1. In the registrar account, note the nameserver hostnames assigned to the domain.
  2. Compare them with the nameservers shown by the DNS provider where you created the A, AAAA, or CNAME records.
  3. Ensure the intended zone exists on every listed authoritative nameserver and contains the same required records.
  4. Check the domain’s NS information and authoritative responses after any change. A typo in a nameserver hostname or an incomplete delegation can make the entire zone appear nonexistent.

If several public resolvers fail for both the apex and its subdomains, inspect delegation before repeatedly editing individual records. Also check DNSSEC when it is enabled: an outdated DS record at the registrar or an invalid signing chain can prevent resolvers from accepting authoritative answers. A DNS provider migration is incomplete until the registrar delegation, the zone contents, and any DNSSEC settings all agree.

When a provider gives you two or more authoritative nameservers, check that each one serves the same intended records. Inconsistent answers can make the site appear to work from one network and fail from another, because different recursive resolvers may reach different authoritative servers.

Compare independent public resolvers

Testing more than one resolver separates a domain-wide DNS fault from a single resolver or network problem. Google’s domain troubleshooting guidance recommends this comparison.

Windows commands

Open Command Prompt and replace example.com with the hostname that fails:

  • nslookup example.com resolver1.opendns.com
  • nslookup example.com dns.quad9.net
  • nslookup example.com one.one.one.one

macOS and Linux commands

In Terminal, run:

  • dig example.com @resolver1.opendns.com
  • dig example.com @dns.quad9.net
  • dig example.com @one.one.one.one

When following Google’s examples, use the real hostname and a trailing dot where shown, such as example.com.. Look for an address in the answer section and note whether the response indicates that the name does not exist. Run the same tests for the apex and each affected subdomain; one can succeed while another fails.

Save the complete output, not just the address. The server that answered, the response status, the authority section, and the returned TTL help you compare tests over time. A response indicating that the name does not exist points toward a missing name or delegation, while a temporary failure can warrant checking the resolver path and authoritative server availability. Interpret the result together with tests from another network rather than relying on one command.

How to read the comparison

If OpenDNS, Quad9, and the third tested resolver all fail, the problem is probably in the domain, its delegation, or its authoritative nameservers. If two succeed and one fails, the domain may already be correct; investigate the failing resolver, your local network path, or cached data. A single successful lookup is useful evidence, but test the hostname from the networks your visitors actually use before declaring the incident over.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Repeat the comparison for every hostname that users report. It is common for example.com to return an address while www.example.com returns no answer because the records are independent. Compare results before and after each correction so you can tell whether the change reached authoritative DNS or is merely hidden by a cache.

Clear local DNS state when the site works elsewhere

When public lookups succeed but your browser still shows ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED, stale local state is a strong possibility. Google Public DNS documentation discusses stale answers and cache flushing, and Chrome’s general troubleshooting guidance also recommends checking connection problems and security software when loading errors persist.

  • Close and reopen the affected browser, then retry the exact hostname.
  • Clear the browser’s cached DNS or host state using the browser’s current network and privacy troubleshooting controls.
  • Flush the operating system’s DNS cache using the supported procedure for your Windows, macOS, or Linux release.
  • Inspect the network adapter’s configured DNS server. A manually assigned or router-provided server may be unreachable or returning stale data.
  • Temporarily test through another network or a different resolver. If the site loads there, focus on the original router, ISP resolver, VPN, security filter, or local configuration.

Security software and network filters can also interfere with name lookups. Do not permanently disable protection as a fix; use a controlled test, then restore the protection and correct its DNS or filtering policy. If the error follows one laptop across multiple networks, inspect that device’s DNS settings. If every device on one router fails while mobile data works, inspect the router or its upstream resolver instead.

Allow for TTLs and propagation after making a correction

A correct DNS edit does not replace every cached answer instantly. Recursive resolvers retain responses until their time to live (TTL) expires, and different networks may refresh at different moments. Cloudflare’s NXDOMAIN guidance says changes may take a few minutes to take effect, while the actual visibility depends on existing TTLs and resolver caches.

After saving a record or changing nameservers:

  1. Confirm that the change is saved in the authoritative DNS service.
  2. Query the authoritative nameserver, then query several public resolvers.
  3. Record the time of the change and the TTL shown in responses.
  4. Retest at intervals rather than changing the record repeatedly. Each additional edit can make diagnosis harder and may introduce a new cached value.

An immediate old answer is not proof that the correction failed. Conversely, one resolver showing the new answer does not prove every visitor has received it. Continue testing until the intended records appear consistently from independent networks. If you changed nameservers, allow for both the new delegation and the records inside the new zone to be cached independently.

Common scenarios and the right fix

The apex works but www fails

The two hostnames are separate DNS names. Add or repair the www A, AAAA, or CNAME record required by your host, and verify that the target resolves. Do not assume that a working apex automatically creates a working subdomain.

A new hosting provider supplied a CNAME

Create the CNAME exactly as specified in the provider’s DNS instructions, using the requested host label and target. Confirm that the record is published by the nameservers delegated at the registrar. If the provider manages DNS for you, make the edit in its control plane instead of an obsolete registrar zone.

The domain was registered recently

Check that the domain is delegated to the nameservers containing your zone. A registration without correct delegation leaves resolvers with no authoritative source for the hostname.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The site stopped after a DNS-provider migration

Compare the registrar’s nameserver list with the new provider’s assigned nameservers. Recreate every required apex and subdomain record in the new zone, including CNAME targets and any IPv6 records. Test authoritative responses before waiting for recursive caches to update.

Only one office, home router, or ISP reports the error

Use the public-resolver comparison from the affected network and from a separate connection. If only one path fails, flush its cache, inspect its configured resolver, and check filtering or security software. Avoid changing authoritative DNS when independent networks already resolve the name correctly.

The dashboard shows a record, but public tests do not

The dashboard may belong to a provider that is no longer authoritative. Check registrar delegation and query the listed authoritative nameservers directly. If those servers do not return the record, recreate it in the active zone or correct the delegation.

Preventing another resolution outage

  • Keep an inventory of the apex and every production subdomain, including whether each uses A, AAAA, or CNAME.
  • Document which registrar account controls delegation and which provider hosts the authoritative zone.
  • Before migrating DNS, copy the complete zone and verify it on the new nameservers.
  • Record CNAME targets and confirm that each target is owned and maintained by the intended service.
  • After changes, test from more than one public resolver and at least one independent network.
  • Track DNSSEC settings so registrar DS records and zone signing remain synchronized.
  • Keep the previous configuration available until the new authoritative responses are confirmed and caches have had time to expire.

These checks address the failure modes behind ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED without confusing a local cache problem with a domain-wide outage. Managed DNS hosting and registrar services can simplify administration, but whichever services you use, document where the authoritative records live and who can change delegation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

When to escalate

Contact the DNS provider or registrar when the registrar shows nameservers that you cannot change, authoritative servers return inconsistent records, DNSSEC validation fails after a key or provider change, or the zone is missing from the service named in the delegation. Provide the exact hostname, the time of each test, and results from multiple resolvers. That evidence lets support distinguish a bad record from a delegation, cache, or resolver-path problem.

Escalate promptly when a production hostname fails from several independent public resolvers, when both apex and subdomains disappear, or when an authoritative server gives different answers from its peers. Include screenshots or command output showing the queried server and response. Avoid making repeated speculative edits while support investigates; preserve the last known-good records and the timeline of changes.

Quick verification checklist

  • Is the hostname spelled exactly as visitors use it?
  • Does the apex or subdomain have the required A, AAAA, or CNAME record?
  • Does every CNAME target resolve?
  • Do the registrar’s nameservers match the DNS provider holding the intended zone?
  • Do authoritative responses and several public resolvers agree?
  • Could a local cache, router, VPN, filter, or security product explain a network-specific failure?
  • Have you allowed the existing TTL and resolver caches time to expire after the correction?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my website show ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED?

The requested hostname did not resolve to a usable address. Check for a typo, a missing A, AAAA, or CNAME record, a broken CNAME target, incorrect registrar delegation, or DNSSEC validation problems.

Why does the domain work on mobile data but not Wi‑Fi?

That pattern usually points to the Wi‑Fi router, ISP resolver, local cache, VPN, or filtering software rather than the authoritative zone. Compare public-resolver lookups from both networks before changing DNS records.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I know whether my DNS records are in the right place?

Compare the nameservers listed at the registrar with the provider where you edited DNS. Query those authoritative nameservers directly and confirm they return the intended apex and subdomain records.

What should I do when a CNAME exists but the error remains?

Verify the CNAME spelling and target on the authoritative nameservers, then test whether the target itself resolves. Repair the target or its DNS if the chain ends at a nonexistent hostname.

How long will ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED last after I fix DNS?

Resolvers keep cached answers until their TTL expires. Cloudflare notes that changes may take a few minutes, but actual visibility varies with existing TTLs and resolver caches. Retest several independent resolvers over time.

Should I change DNS if only one resolver fails?

Not immediately. If other public resolvers and networks succeed, investigate the failing resolver, local cache, router, or network path. Change authoritative DNS only when authoritative tests or several independent resolvers show a domain-side problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Fix ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED by tracing the hostname from browser to authoritative DNS: verify spelling and records, repair CNAME targets, confirm registrar delegation and DNSSEC, compare several public resolvers, clear local state when appropriate, and allow TTL-driven caches to expire before judging the result.
