How to Fix Error 0x0000024C on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x0000024C is the Win32 code ERROR_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED. It means Windows or an application requested a file-system operation for which a required file-system driver was unavailable or could not be used. The code alone does not prove that your disk is failing and it is not automatically a blue-screen error.

First record where the code appeared, undo any recent driver or hardware change, and use Safe Mode if normal startup is unstable. Then check Device Manager, Event Viewer, Windows and firmware updates, storage health, system files, memory, and free disk space. Do not confuse 0x0000024C with the separate blue-screen bug check 0x00000024, NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM.

What error 0x0000024C means

Microsoft maps hexadecimal 0x0000024C to ERROR_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED, a Win32 system error. Windows can return a Win32 error in an application dialog, command output, service log, or Event Viewer entry. Seeing this value does not by itself mean that Windows has crashed or that the operating system is infected.

A file-system driver is the software layer that lets Windows and storage-related components communicate with a file system. A recently changed storage driver, filter driver, security product, virtual-drive component, damaged Windows file, or failing storage device can make that layer unavailable. The number does not identify the exact driver, so the surrounding message and system evidence matter.

Why Windows says a file-system driver is required

Windows may display this code when an operation depends on a driver that is missing, disabled, incompatible, or unable to initialize. For example, a storage controller update, disk-encryption component, backup filter, antivirus filter, or virtual-drive utility can change how applications reach a volume. A damaged system component can produce a similar symptom. The same hexadecimal value can therefore have different practical causes on different computers.

Treat the code as a starting point, not a diagnosis. The most useful clues are the exact operation that failed, whether the problem happens at every boot or only in one application, and what changed immediately beforehand.

Do not confuse it with 0x00000024

The blue-screen bug check 0x00000024 is a different value. Microsoft labels that stop code NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM; it is associated with NTFS corruption, bad disk sectors, or storage drivers. Count every zero and check the location where the code appeared:

A different number that only resembles 24C Another error or stop code Copy the exact value before applying a fix.

Use the location and timing to narrow the cause

Compare possible causes by five practical clues: where the code appears, when it started, whether it is reproducible, what Event Viewer records, and what storage or memory diagnostics report. A dialog from one backup or virtual-drive application points toward that application or its filter driver. A failure during every boot points more strongly toward a startup driver, service, firmware, or system-file problem. A blue screen with a named module in a dump is stronger evidence than a generic driver-updater warning.

Do not assume that a registry cleaner, an “outdated driver” advertisement, or a single unrelated warning identifies the fault. Prefer evidence that repeats at the same time as the failure.

Before changing anything

  1. Record the context. Copy the full text, the application or command that produced it, and the time. Run winver to record the Windows 10 or Windows 11 version and build. Note any graphics, storage, USB, security, virtualization, BIOS/UEFI, or other driver or hardware change made immediately beforehand.
  2. Back up important files. If the error is accompanied by slow reads, missing files, clicking noises, repeated restarts, or a drive-health warning, copy irreplaceable data to another disk before running repairs.
  3. Undo the latest change when practical. Disconnect newly installed hardware, remove a newly added external drive, or roll back a recently installed driver or utility. Keep the installer or recovery package available so you can restore it if the rollback is not the cause.
  4. Preserve evidence. Save screenshots, event details, Device Manager status text, and any diagnostic report. Broad cleanup or repeated resets can erase the clues needed to identify a driver.

Use Safe Mode when normal startup is unstable

Safe Mode loads only the minimum drivers and system services needed for Windows startup. If the error appears during every normal boot, Safe Mode can show whether a third-party driver or service is involved.

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. If Windows will not reach Settings, interrupt startup twice; Windows should enter the recovery environment on the next boot.
  3. Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking. Use networking only when you need access to a trusted update or driver source.

Repeat the diagnostic steps below in Safe Mode. If the code disappears there, compare the drivers and services loaded during a normal boot rather than deleting random system files. Safe Mode is an isolation step, not a permanent repair; a device that works there can still fail when its normal driver or service is loaded.

Check Device Manager for a driver problem

A yellow exclamation mark, a device that has disappeared, or a driver date that matches the start of the problem is stronger evidence than a generic “outdated driver” warning.

  1. Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
  2. Expand Disk drives, Storage controllers, System devices, and any category related to the operation that failed. Also inspect USB, network, security, and virtual-drive devices if they were recently changed.
  3. For a device with a warning icon, open Properties and read the Device status message. On the Driver tab, note the provider, date, and version.
  4. Use Update driver only with a package from Windows Update or the computer, motherboard, or device manufacturer. If the issue began after an update, choose Roll Back Driver when available.
  5. If a newly installed device is implicated, choose Disable device temporarily or uninstall its driver, then restart. Follow the manufacturer’s recovery instructions; do not remove a storage controller driver without a recovery plan.

Microsoft’s advanced stop-error guidance recommends contacting the hardware vendor when a named driver or service is implicated. Preserve the driver name and the Device Manager status message for that conversation. If several devices show warnings after one Windows update, test the update rollback or the manufacturer’s replacement package before changing unrelated drivers.

Install Windows, BIOS, and firmware updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, install current cumulative updates, and restart when requested. Then check the computer or storage manufacturer’s support page for BIOS/UEFI and device-firmware updates that match the exact model. Firmware updates can affect storage controllers, SSDs, docking stations, and removable media.

  • Use the manufacturer’s model and operating-system selection, not a similarly named model.
  • Keep the computer on reliable power during BIOS or firmware installation.
  • Do not interrupt a firmware update or close its utility early.
  • If the error started immediately after a firmware update, check whether the vendor documents a rollback or newer corrective release.
  • Restart after each significant update so you can tell which change altered the behavior.

Verify storage health and free space

Windows needs working space for swap files, updates, and file-system operations. Microsoft guidance recommends keeping about 10–15% of the disk free. In Settings > System > Storage, check the free-space figure for the affected volume and remove or move data only after confirming that it is safe to do so.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the graphical drive check

  1. Open File Explorer, right-click the affected drive, and select Properties.
  2. Open the Tools tab and select Check under Error checking.
  3. Allow Windows to scan and follow its prompt if it needs to schedule a repair at restart.

Use the supported command-line scan

Open Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

chkdsk C: /scan

Replace C: with the affected volume. The online scan checks the file system without immediately forcing an offline repair. If Windows reports that a repair must be scheduled, read the prompt carefully and restart when you can tolerate downtime. Do not repeatedly force repairs on a drive that is disappearing or making unusual noises; secure a backup first.

Run the manufacturer’s diagnostics

Use the storage manufacturer’s diagnostic utility when one is available for the exact drive. If it reports bad sectors, an impending failure, or an unreadable device, back up data before attempting further repairs. Replace a drive only after diagnostics support that conclusion; an unverified replacement can hide a driver or file-system problem without fixing it.

Repair Windows system files with SFC

Damaged Windows components can prevent a required file-system component from loading. In an elevated Command Prompt, run Microsoft’s documented System File Checker command:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
sfc /scannow

Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. The result will state whether Windows found no integrity violations, repaired files, or found files it could not repair. Preserve that result. If SFC cannot repair the files, move to Microsoft’s supported component-repair and recovery guidance for the installed Windows version instead of downloading replacement DLLs from an unverified site. A successful SFC run does not rule out a failing disk or third-party driver, so continue with the checks that match the timing and symptoms.

Check Event Viewer for the trigger

Event Viewer can show whether the code coincided with a driver load failure, disk timeout, service failure, or unexpected restart.

  1. Press Windows key + X and open Event Viewer.
  2. Review Windows Logs > System and Windows Logs > Application.
  3. Use Filter Current Log for Critical, Error, and Warning entries around the recorded time.
  4. Open an event and save its General and Details information. Record the provider, event ID, device or driver name, and any file path.

Correlate several entries in the same time window rather than treating one warning as proof. A driver-specific event that repeats at each failure is more useful than an unrelated warning from hours earlier. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance specifically recommends reviewing event logs and matching critical entries to the time of the failure.

Run memory and malware checks

Windows Memory Diagnostics

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter mdsched.exe, and press Enter.
  2. Choose Restart now and check for problems when you can close your work, or schedule the test for the next restart.
  3. After Windows starts, open Event Viewer and go to Windows Logs > System. Find the MemoryDiagnostics-Results entry and record whether errors were detected.

Intermittent memory errors can corrupt the data needed to analyze a crash. If the test reports errors, test modules and slots according to the computer or motherboard manufacturer’s instructions before replacing parts.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Malware scanning

Run a reputable, up-to-date malware scan. If disk infection is plausible, include an MBR-aware scan. A malware check is one part of the investigation; it does not explain every file-system-driver error, and a clean result does not rule out faulty hardware or a bad driver.

Collect a dump when the problem recurs as a blue screen

If the exact value is on a blue screen or the computer repeatedly restarts, configure Windows to retain diagnostic information before the next occurrence.

  1. Press Windows key + R, enter sysdm.cpl, and open the Advanced tab.
  2. Under Startup and Recovery, select Settings.
  3. Under Write debugging information, choose Automatic memory dump and confirm the dump path. Small dumps are stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump; kernel, complete, and automatic dumps use %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP.
  4. After the next crash, copy the dump before cleanup software removes it. Open it in WinDbg and run:
!analyze -v

Inspect the stack and the named module, then compare it with Device Manager and Event Viewer. A dump that repeatedly identifies one third-party driver is actionable evidence; a corrupted or incomplete dump may not identify a cause. Keep the Windows build and the exact stop-screen text with the dump when sending it to support.

Prioritize causes using evidence

Microsoft’s aggregate crash analysis attributes approximately 70% of analyzed crashes to third-party driver code, 10% to hardware, 5% to Microsoft code, and leaves 15% unknown because memory is too corrupted to analyze. These are Microsoft’s overall figures, not the probability that any one computer has a particular fault.

When to escalate or replace hardware

Seek the computer or component manufacturer’s support when a named driver, BIOS/UEFI version, or firmware package is implicated; include the exact Windows build, event details, dump analysis, and diagnostic results. Escalate to data-recovery or professional repair help when the drive is disappearing, cannot be read, or contains the only copy of important files.

Do not use registry cleaners, delete random files from C:WindowsSystem32drivers, or repeatedly force disk repairs without a backup. A replacement SSD, memory module, or controller is justified by a confirmed diagnostic fault, not by the hexadecimal code alone.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, shared DLL files, settings that add CPU, RAM or disk load, temporary and cache files, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, real-time boosting, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is error 0x0000024C?

It is Microsoft’s Win32 ERROR_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED value. A required file-system driver was unavailable or could not be used for an operation. The code does not identify one specific driver or prove that the disk has failed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How do I fix 0x0000024C on Windows 11?

Record the exact context, undo a recent driver or hardware change, and use Safe Mode if startup is unstable. Then inspect Device Manager and Event Viewer, install Windows and manufacturer firmware updates, check storage health and free space, run chkdsk and SFC, and test memory. Repeated blue screens warrant a memory dump and WinDbg analysis.

Is 0x0000024C the same as NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM?

No. 0x0000024C is the Win32 ERROR_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED code. NTFS_FILE_SYSTEM is the separate blue-screen bug check 0x00000024. Confirm the number of zeroes and where it appeared before selecting a fix.

Why does Windows say a file-system driver is required?

A storage, filter, security, encryption, or virtual-drive driver may be missing, disabled, incompatible, or unable to initialize. A damaged Windows component or failing storage device can create the same symptom, so surrounding events and timing are important.

Should I run chkdsk immediately?

First protect important data if the drive is slow, disappearing, noisy, or reporting health problems. Then use the drive Properties check or the supported online command chkdsk C: /scan, replacing C: with the affected volume. Follow any request to schedule an offline repair and avoid repeated forced repairs without a backup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if SFC says it could not repair some files?

Save the SFC result and use Microsoft’s supported component-repair and recovery guidance for your installed Windows version. Do not download replacement system DLLs from random websites. Continue checking drivers, storage, and memory because SFC cannot diagnose every cause of this error.

Where are Windows crash dumps stored?

Small dumps are stored in %SystemRoot%Minidump. Kernel, complete, and automatic dumps use %SystemRoot%MEMORY.DMP. Configure Automatic memory dump in System Properties before the next crash, then open the file in WinDbg and run !analyze -v.

When should I replace the SSD or another component?

Replace hardware only when manufacturer diagnostics or repeatable tests confirm a fault, such as bad sectors, an impending drive failure, or memory errors. The hexadecimal code alone is not enough evidence for a replacement.

The Bottom Line

0x0000024C means ERROR_FS_DRIVER_REQUIRED, not automatically a failing disk or a blue screen. Confirm the exact code and context, protect data, undo recent changes, and isolate startup drivers with Safe Mode. Use Device Manager, Event Viewer, Windows and firmware updates, storage checks, SFC, memory diagnostics, and dumps to identify the cause. Escalate to the hardware vendor or replace a component only when logs or diagnostics support that decision.
