Error 0x000004B6 is Windows ERROR_BAD_PROFILE: Microsoft defines it as “The network connection profile is corrupted.” Rebuilding the affected Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, printer, or shared-device connection usually addresses the condition; the code does not identify a particular printer, adapter, or other hardware part.
Start with the least destructive checks, then remove and recreate the affected connection, run Windows’ built-in troubleshooting, and update the correct device driver. The instructions below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, although Windows 10 reached end of support on October 14, 2025.

What 0x000004B6 means
Windows stores network settings as profiles. A profile contains the configuration Windows uses to recognize and connect to a network or network resource. If that saved configuration becomes inconsistent or damaged, Windows can return 0x000004B6 instead of completing the connection.

The message may appear while you are:
- Joining a Wi‑Fi network or reconnecting after a router restart.
- Using an Ethernet connection.
- Discovering or installing a shared network printer.
- Opening another computer, server, or network resource.
- Installing software that communicates over the network.
The code describes a Windows configuration state, not a diagnosis of a failed cable, router, printer, or network adapter. A device can expose the problem because Windows is trying to use its damaged profile, but replacing hardware is not the first response.

Before changing anything: identify the scope
Write down exactly what triggers the error. This determines which profile you need to rebuild and prevents unnecessary changes to working connections.
- Only one Wi‑Fi network: the saved wireless profile is the leading suspect.
- Every Wi‑Fi network: investigate the Windows network configuration, adapter, or recently installed network software.
- Ethernet only: check the cable, switch or router port, and the Ethernet connection profile.
- One printer or shared device: remove and add that device again after confirming the computer is online.
- Several network resources: treat the issue as a broader Windows networking problem and postpone device-specific replacement.
Note whether the failure began after a shutdown, update, VPN installation, security-software change, driver change, or router replacement. This information is useful if the profile corrupts again and you need to review Windows logs.
First-line recovery: reconnect and restart
- Disconnect the affected connection. Turn Wi‑Fi off and back on, unplug and reconnect Ethernet, or disconnect the shared device. For a printer, power it off, wait several seconds, and power it back on.
- Restart the network equipment. Reboot the router, access point, switch, or print server involved in the failing connection. Wait until its normal status lights return.
- Restart the Windows PC. A restart reloads networking services and discards temporary state without deleting saved profiles.
- Test a different resource. If possible, connect to another Wi‑Fi network or open another shared resource. A successful test narrows the fault to the original profile or device.
If the same message returns, continue with the profile-specific procedure rather than repeatedly restarting.
Recreate a damaged Wi‑Fi or Ethernet connection
Wi‑Fi: forget the saved network and join again
For a wireless network that alone produces the error, remove its saved entry and create a fresh profile.

- Open Settings and go to Network & internet.
- Open the Wi‑Fi section and choose Manage known networks (the wording can vary slightly between Windows 11 and Windows 10).
- Select the affected network and choose Forget.
- Return to the available Wi‑Fi networks list, select the same network, and choose Connect.
- Enter the wireless password again. If the network uses an organization sign-in, supply the current credentials rather than relying on an old saved prompt.
- Retry the operation that originally produced
0x000004B6.
Forgetting a network removes its saved password and profile-specific settings. It does not change the router or erase other computers’ connections. Make sure you know the password before selecting Forget.
Ethernet: rebuild the connection without deleting unrelated profiles
Ethernet does not present the same saved-network list as Wi‑Fi. First unplug and reconnect the cable at both ends, try a known-good cable or router port, and restart the network equipment. Then open Settings > Network & internet and confirm that Ethernet shows as connected. If Windows offers a disconnect, disable, or reconnect control for the adapter, use it once and reconnect.
If every Ethernet resource still fails, record the adapter name shown in Windows before making broader changes. A broad network reset can remove adapters, VPN connections, and saved network information; use it only when ordinary reconnection and troubleshooting have failed, and be prepared to recreate those connections afterward.
When the profile belongs to a shared resource
If the error appears only when opening another computer, server, or shared folder, verify that the PC can reach the same network and that the host is online. Remove the failing saved connection through the relevant Windows Settings or legacy Control Panel workflow, then connect again and provide the required account credentials. Do not delete unrelated network entries merely because they are listed nearby.

Use Windows’ built-in troubleshooting
Microsoft’s connectivity guidance recommends starting with Windows’ own diagnostic tools. On Windows 11, open the Get Help app and run the printer or connectivity troubleshooter that matches the symptom. Follow each suggested check, allowing the tool to test the adapter, connection, and print path before accepting a proposed change.
For a general network failure, open Settings > Network & internet, select the active connection, and use the available diagnostic or troubleshooting link. Windows may ask which adapter or resource is failing. Choose the one that generated the error rather than running repairs against every adapter indiscriminately.
Record the result: a repaired profile, a failed test, or a recommendation that could not be applied. That record prevents repeating the same step and helps distinguish a profile problem from a driver or hardware problem.

A printer can reveal 0x000004B6 while Windows is discovering, installing, or reconnecting to it. The code still refers to a corrupted network profile; it is not a printer model number.

Run the printer troubleshooter first
Use the Get Help printer troubleshooter on Windows 11. Confirm that the printer is powered on, connected to the same network as the PC, and not showing an offline or error state on its own display. If the troubleshooter reports that discovery or communication failed, continue by removing and adding the printer.
Remove and add the printer again
- Open Settings > Bluetooth & devices > Printers & scanners on Windows 11. Windows 10 uses a similarly named Devices > Printers & scanners page.
- Select the affected printer and choose Remove if it is already listed.
- Choose Add device and wait while Windows searches.
- If the printer appears, select it and complete the installation.
- If it is not listed, choose the manual-add option and follow the available path for a printer by address, shared name, or local port. Use the address or share name supplied by your network administrator or printer documentation.
- Print a test page, then retry the application that showed the original error.
Microsoft states that supported printers normally install automatically. Manual addition is for cases where discovery does not list the device; it is not a reason to guess an address or install an unrelated model driver.
Update or reinstall the correct driver
A corrupted profile and a bad driver can produce similar symptoms. Update the driver after rebuilding the connection, especially when the error began after an update or when the device is missing, unstable, or repeatedly disconnecting.

- Run Windows Update and install applicable updates for your edition.
- For a printer, network adapter, or other peripheral, check the manufacturer’s support page for the current driver that matches the exact model and Windows version.
- If the device already appears in Windows but fails, use Device Manager to uninstall the device or driver only when the manufacturer’s instructions support that step, then restart and install the current package.
- Reconnect the device and test it before installing optional utilities or older driver packages.
Microsoft specifically advises checking the manufacturer when an installed printer does not work. Avoid driver-download sites that do not identify the manufacturer package, because an incorrect driver can create a second problem while leaving the profile untouched.

If the profile corrupts again immediately
Repeated corruption suggests that something is rewriting or damaging the profile rather than a one-time connection failure. Check what changed immediately before the recurrence:
- VPN or network-management software installation, update, or removal.
- Security software changes that filter network traffic.
- A driver update or rollback for the Wi‑Fi, Ethernet, or printer adapter.
- An interrupted update, forced shutdown, or power loss.
- Changes to the router, access point, print server, or shared computer.
Temporarily disable or remove a recently added network component only according to its vendor’s documented procedure. Do not disable protection permanently. After each change, restart Windows and test the original connection so you know which change affected the result.
Review Windows logs before advanced edits
When ordinary troubleshooting does not hold, review Windows logs around the time of the failure. Look for entries from networking, WLAN, Device Setup, PrintService, or the adapter driver that identify a service, device, or installation event. Capture the timestamp, event source, event ID, and exact text.

Microsoft’s definition establishes that the profile is corrupted, but it does not publish one registry command that safely fixes every occurrence. Registry editing can remove unrelated configuration and should not be the next step simply because the hexadecimal code looks system-level.
Windows 11 and Windows 10 considerations
The relevant Microsoft support guidance covers Windows 11 and Windows 10. Menu names can differ by release, so use the Settings search box for “Wi‑Fi,” “Printers & scanners,” “Get Help,” or “Network reset” if a path is not displayed exactly as written.
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. In 2026, a Windows 10 PC may not receive ordinary security or compatibility updates, and a manufacturer may no longer publish new drivers for it. You can still perform the profile and printer procedures above, but confirm that any driver package explicitly supports your Windows edition and consider a supported Windows version when recurring network failures remain unresolved.
What not to do
- Do not buy a new printer, router, or adapter solely because this code appeared; it does not identify failed hardware.
- Do not delete every saved network profile when only one connection fails.
- Do not guess a printer’s network address or install a driver for a similar model.
- Do not apply an unverified registry “fix” before documenting the failure and checking logs.
- Do not assume that a successful internet connection proves a shared printer or server profile is healthy; test the exact resource that fails.
When to seek device or network support
Escalate to the printer manufacturer, network administrator, or Windows support when the profile recreates itself as corrupted after every restart, multiple computers cannot reach the same resource, the device disappears from Device Manager, or logs show repeated adapter or service failures. Provide the Windows version, affected resource, time of failure, steps already completed, driver version, and relevant log entries. This evidence helps support staff distinguish a local profile from a network-wide or hardware issue.
