Why the code alone is not enough
The same code can be displayed during application startup, while assigning a shortcut in a settings screen, when launching a game overlay, or after a background utility starts. Windows does not include the name of the conflicting owner in the number. Record the exact message, the program showing it, and the action that preceded it before changing settings.
Capture the context before changing anything
Write down these details while the error is reproducible:
- The application, game, launcher, overlay, keyboard utility, or macro tool that displays the message.
- Whether it appears immediately after sign-in, while Windows is starting, when a particular app opens, or only after you press or assign a shortcut.
- The exact key combination involved, including modifier keys such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, Windows, or a function key.
- Recent installations, updates, peripheral changes, or restored settings that happened before the problem.
- The time of the latest occurrence, which will help you match an entry in Event Viewer.
This record prevents a common mistake: treating 0x0000058B as a generic Windows failure and changing unrelated system settings. If the message is limited to one app, begin there. If it appears before any app is visible or names a background utility, investigate startup programs instead.

Fix the shortcut conflict in the affected app
Delete and recreate the assignment
- Open the program named in the message.
- Open its Settings, Preferences, Options, or Keyboard/Hotkeys page. The label varies by application.
- Locate the action using the shortcut. Clear the assignment, apply the change, and restart the program.
- Return to the same page and assign a combination that is not used by another feature. Apply it and test the action.
Clearing the old assignment first matters because some programs retain a stale registration even after you type a new combination over it. If the app offers a “Reset shortcuts” or “Restore defaults” command, export or note custom bindings before using it; resetting can remove every personal key mapping.
Choose an unused combination
Avoid combinations already used by the app, Windows, your keyboard manufacturer’s utility, a screen recorder, a clipboard manager, an overlay, a remote-control program, or a macro tool. A shortcut that works when one utility is closed but fails when it starts again is strong evidence of an ownership conflict. Keep a short list of combinations reserved for each utility so later installations do not reuse them.

Close other hotkey owners for a controlled test
- Save work and exit launchers, overlays, clipboard managers, macro utilities, keyboard-lighting software, screen-capture tools, and remote-control software from their notification-area menus.
- Reopen only the affected application.
- Trigger the shortcut or reopen the shortcut-assignment page.
- If the error is gone, close the app, relaunch one utility, and test again. Continue one at a time until the conflicting program is identified.
This is an isolation method based on the error definition, not a universal Microsoft repair. Some utilities remain active after their window closes, so use each program’s Quit or Exit command rather than merely closing its settings window.
Restart and update the software involved
Restart in the right order
After changing a shortcut, completely exit the affected app and start it again. If a background utility owns the shortcut, exit that utility too, restart Windows, and test before reopening optional tools. A restart clears registrations held by processes that did not release them when a configuration changed.
Install the application’s current update
Use the program’s built-in update command or its normal publisher-provided installer. Read the release notes when available, especially if the error began after a Windows update or a change to an overlay. Back up or export custom key bindings first. If the problem started immediately after an application update, use that publisher’s documented rollback option rather than downloading an unofficial older installer.
Update Windows and hardware drivers
Microsoft’s general troubleshooting guidance recommends installing important Windows and hardware-driver updates and removing outdated or nonessential software when investigating failures. Apply updates, restart, and test the same shortcut again. A keyboard or input driver is not normally the first suspect for this code, but keeping it current removes one variable when the error affects several applications.
Stop a startup utility from claiming the shortcut
Temporarily disable a startup entry
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps in Windows 11, or the Startup tab in the Windows 10 layout.
- Sort by status or publisher and identify recently installed hotkey, overlay, macro, launcher, capture, or keyboard utilities.
- Select one candidate and choose Disable. Do not disable security software or a driver you cannot identify.
- Restart Windows and test the affected application.
Disabling an entry does not uninstall it and is reversible: return to the same list and choose Enable. If the error disappears, re-enable candidates one at a time and restart between tests. The first program that brings the error back is the likely conflict, although two programs can also conflict only when both are enabled.

Use a clean boot when the owner is unclear
Microsoft’s clean-boot guidance is designed to isolate broader software conflicts. The exact labels can vary slightly by Windows build, but the procedure is:
- Press Win+R, type
msconfig, and press Enter. - Open the Services tab. Select Hide all Microsoft services before changing anything.
- Choose Disable all for the remaining third-party services.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable enabled third-party startup items.
- Apply the changes and restart. Test the app and shortcut in this reduced environment.
If the message disappears, restore services and startup items in small groups, restarting after each change, until the conflict returns. Then narrow the group to one item. When testing is finished, open msconfig again and return to Normal startup, or re-enable the items you need. Leaving a diagnostic configuration in place can prevent legitimate services from starting.
Run Windows Update troubleshooting
Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the recommended actions, restart, then return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart and check Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update for updates.
The troubleshooter is a general update diagnostic; it is not a code-specific hotkey repair. It is worthwhile when Windows components or several applications began misbehaving together, or when an update is waiting to complete.
Repair Windows files only when symptoms are broader
Use System File Checker when more than one Windows component is failing, system dialogs are damaged, or the problem continues in a clean boot. It is not a confirmed cure for a single application’s shortcut conflict.
- Open Start and type
Command Prompt. - Right-click Command Prompt and choose Run as administrator.
- At the elevated prompt, enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Wait for verification to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while the scan is running.
- Read the result, restart Windows, and retest the original trigger.
If SFC reports that it could not complete, note the exact message and investigate that broader Windows issue separately. Do not repeatedly run repair commands as a substitute for finding which program owns the shortcut. A successful scan does not prove that the application’s hotkey configuration is correct.

Use Event Viewer to identify timing and the responsible process
Event Viewer may not name the hotkey owner, but its timestamps can connect the error with a service or application start.
- Press Win+R, type
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Expand Windows Logs and select Application. Also check System if the message appears during sign-in or boot.
- Choose Filter Current Log and select a time range around the occurrence. Do not filter only by 0x0000058B; many entries store a decimal code or place the useful name in the description.
- Open entries at the recorded time and note the application name, source, event ID, and faulting module if shown.
Use the timestamp as supporting evidence, not as proof that every nearby entry caused the problem. Preserve the event details with the app name, shortcut, and recent changes if you need to contact the publisher or Microsoft support.

Work from the top of the table downward. A shortcut change or temporary disablement can solve the immediate problem while preserving evidence. Uninstall only after you have identified the utility and confirmed that you do not need its features.

Games commonly run alongside launchers, chat clients, capture software, performance monitors, controller mappers, and accessibility utilities. Any of them can request a global shortcut. Test the game with optional overlays and macro tools closed, then add them back one at a time. If the game’s own key binding works but a global overlay shortcut fails, the game is probably not the owner; investigate the overlay’s settings and startup behavior.
Do not delete game configuration files as a first step. Export key bindings, use the launcher’s documented reset option, and preserve save data. If only one game shows the message after an update, provide its developers with the exact build, shortcut, time, and Event Viewer evidence rather than changing unrelated Windows registry values.

What not to do
- Do not infer a malware infection from 0x0000058B. The code identifies a failed hotkey registration, not a security verdict.
- Do not edit or delete registry hotkey entries based only on this number. Registry locations and meanings are application-specific, and an incorrect change can prevent software from starting.
- Do not download random “error fixer” files or replacement DLLs. They can introduce incompatible or unsafe software and do not establish which process owns the shortcut.
- Do not disable all security protections permanently while testing. Close only the suspected hotkey or overlay utilities, and restore diagnostic settings after the test.
- Do not assume that reinstalling Windows is warranted for an error limited to one shortcut in one application.
Windows 10 support status and what it changes
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The troubleshooting steps above can still help with an existing installation, but an unresolved system-wide problem should be evaluated with the support status in mind. If your hardware supports it, moving to a supported Windows release reduces the number of unsupported system variables; check compatibility and back up data before upgrading.
When to escalate
Contact the affected app’s publisher or Microsoft support when the error persists after shortcut reassignment, utility isolation, updates, and a clean-boot test. Include:
- Windows edition and build, and whether it is Windows 11 or Windows 10.
- The exact application and version, including the game or launcher build when relevant.
- The shortcut and the precise action that triggers the message.
- Whether the problem occurs at startup, only in one app, or across multiple apps.
- Recent installs, updates, peripheral changes, and the result of disabling startup utilities.
- The Event Viewer timestamp and relevant event details.
- The SFC result, if you ran it because other Windows components were also failing.
This evidence lets support reproduce the registration request and identify an application-specific defect. If the message stopped after one utility was disabled, report that relationship instead of describing the issue only as a Windows error.
