Microsoft defines its message as “Failed to create name for deleted object.” It usually appears when an LDAP client, directory-management utility, restore workflow, replication task, or custom application tries to create or use a name associated with an object that has already been deleted.
This is not a normal Windows Update, activation, blue-screen, or hardware-failure code. The reliable fix is to identify the directory operation, inspect the affected object and naming context, then correct the stale reference or use an approved recovery procedure. There is no single Microsoft command or version-specific hotfix that resolves every occurrence.

Active Directory assigns names to directory objects inside specific naming contexts. An object that has been deleted can remain represented as a deleted-object or tombstone record for directory recovery and replication purposes. If a request attempts to create a name for that deleted object, or follows a stale reference to it, the directory service can return this code.

The same constant may be displayed by different products. The dialog, event, or command that contains the code is therefore as important as the code itself. A restore tool, LDAP script, replication monitor, and custom application can all expose ERROR_DS_NO_DELETED_NAME while requiring different remediation.

Capture the context before changing Active Directory
Do not start by deleting objects, forcing replication, or recreating accounts. First preserve enough information to identify the operation and permit rollback or escalation.
- Save the complete message. Copy the full dialog, command output, event text, and any accompanying error or object identifier. The hexadecimal value alone does not identify the object or naming context.
- Record the application and operation. Note whether the failure happened during a restore, rename, create, move, replication, synchronization, migration, or custom script. Record the product and version if shown.
- Write down timing and identity. Capture the timestamp, time zone, user account or service account, workstation, and the domain controller that handled the request.
- Preserve the target names. Record the object’s distinguished name (DN), relative distinguished name (RDN), GUID or other identifier shown by the tool, and the naming context. Sanitize exports before sharing them outside your organization.
- Check whether the failure is repeatable. Record whether it occurs for one object, every object in a workflow, or only when a particular domain controller is selected. Do not repeatedly retry a destructive operation while evidence is being collected.
These details distinguish a deleted object from a stale reference, an incorrect partition, and a replication inconsistency. They also give an administrator a way to compare the request with directory events.
Confirm that the code really comes from Active Directory
When the directory diagnosis fits
Treat the error as an Active Directory issue when it appears during domain administration, LDAP work, object recovery, synchronization, replication, or an application that reads and writes directory objects. Look for a domain controller name, distinguished name, LDAP operation, naming context, or directory-service event alongside the code.
When the context is a Windows upgrade or update
If the message appeared while installing Windows, a feature update, or a cumulative update, recheck the complete code and surrounding text. Windows upgrade documentation covers other error-code families, and a truncated or miscopied value can lead to the wrong diagnosis. Do not apply an Active Directory repair procedure solely because a similar-looking hexadecimal value appeared in an update log.

When both problems are present
A workstation can have a genuine directory error and a separate operating-system problem. Keep the investigations separate: first identify the directory operation that returned 0x000020A3; only then troubleshoot unrelated restarts, freezes, or update failures.
Inspect directory and replication evidence
Review Directory Service events
On the domain controller involved in the failed operation, review the Directory Service event log around the recorded timestamp. Correlate the event with the application log, task history, or script output that reported the hexadecimal code. Capture event IDs, object names, naming contexts, and the domain controller listed in each event before clearing logs or rerunning the job.
Check the object’s state
Determine whether the target is a live object, a deleted-object or tombstone record, or merely a stale reference held by the calling application. Compare the requested DN and RDN with the object currently present in the relevant directory partition. A request that names an object in the wrong partition can look similar to a request aimed at a deleted object.

Identify the naming context
Record whether the request concerns the domain partition, configuration partition, schema partition, or an application-specific naming context. The same object name can exist in different contexts, and a recovery or creation action aimed at the wrong context can fail even when a similarly named object exists elsewhere.

Check replication partners
Review replication status for the involved domain controller and its partners. Look for differences in object state, recent replication failures, or a request that alternates between controllers. Preserve the status output and event evidence. Do not force a replication repair or remove lingering records merely to make one retry succeed; those actions can create a larger consistency problem.
Choose the remediation that matches the operation
The correct action depends on what the original request was trying to do. Use the following distinctions before changing an object.

If the request is a restore
Confirm that the restore job is pointing to the intended deleted object, domain controller, and naming context. If the job retained a DN or identifier from before deletion, correct that stale input rather than attempting to create a replacement object blindly. Use only the recovery workflow approved for your organization, with the required backup, authorization, and audit controls.
If the request is a create or rename
Check whether the requested name belongs to a deleted-object record or conflicts with an existing object. A naming change may be safer than trying to reuse a name that the directory still treats as associated with a deleted object, but the choice depends on your naming policy and application dependencies. Update every dependent reference deliberately; do not silently create a second object with an unrelated identity.

If the request follows a stale reference
Find where the old DN, GUID, or other identifier is stored: a scheduled task, synchronization mapping, script, application cache, or configuration file. Correct the source reference and document the change. Recreating an object with the same display name does not necessarily satisfy a reference that expects the original directory identity.
If replication is involved
Compare the object and event evidence across the participating domain controllers. Determine whether the failure is isolated to one partner or partition. Because replication changes affect production consistency, have an experienced Active Directory administrator review the evidence before forcing synchronization, removing records, or rebuilding objects.

ERROR_DS_NO_DELETED_NAME identifies a directory-service condition, not one fixed product defect. The required action changes with the originating application, object lifecycle, naming context, domain-controller topology, and replication state. Microsoft’s published error definition supplies the meaning of the code, but it does not prescribe one command that is safe for every restore, rename, create, or replication scenario.
Version labels such as Windows 10 and Windows 11 do not by themselves select a remedy. Active Directory behavior is also affected by the domain’s configuration and the tools performing the operation. A supposed “one-click fix,” registry edit, or generic driver update cannot establish which object was deleted or repair a stale directory reference.

Safe Windows troubleshooting when separate system symptoms exist
Windows recovery steps are relevant only when the error is accompanied by independent operating-system symptoms such as repeated unexpected restarts, instability, or a device problem. They do not directly repair an Active Directory naming error.
- Remove newly added hardware. If instability began after installing a device, disconnect or remove it according to the manufacturer’s safe procedure and test again.
- Try Safe Mode. Boot Windows into Safe Mode to determine whether a third-party driver or startup component is contributing to the separate system symptom.
- Check Device Manager. Look for warning icons, recently changed devices, or driver errors. This is a hardware and driver check, not an Active Directory repair.
- Maintain free disk space. Ensure the system volume has sufficient room for logs, updates, and recovery operations. Record any storage warning separately from the directory failure.
- Install pending Windows updates. Apply updates through the normal supported process when the machine is stable and policy permits. Recheck the complete error text afterward rather than assuming the update changed the directory condition.
- Use System Restore for recurring OS instability. Select an appropriate restore point only after confirming that the problem is an operating-system change. System Restore does not restore Active Directory objects or repair replication metadata.
When to escalate
Escalate a production-domain occurrence to an experienced Active Directory administrator or Microsoft support when the affected object is business-critical, replication is inconsistent, the restore process is ambiguous, or the error persists after correcting the caller’s reference.
Provide a sanitized package containing:
- The complete error text and the application or command that produced it.
- Timestamp, time zone, account, workstation, and domain controller.
- Event IDs and relevant Directory Service, application, and replication log entries.
- Object DN, identifier, deleted-object or tombstone status, and naming context.
- Replication-partner names and status at the time of failure.
- The exact operation attempted and the changes already made.
- Backup, restore, rollback, and authorization details for any proposed directory change.
Until the evidence is reviewed, avoid bulk deletion, blind object recreation, manual tombstone manipulation, or repeated writes against multiple domain controllers. Those actions can obscure the original condition and make recovery or auditing harder.
