In practical terms, Windows has found an invalid, damaged or incompatible XML manifest while starting an application. The fastest reliable approach is to identify the application named in the error or event log, repair or reinstall that application, and then check Windows component integrity if more than one program is affected.
This code does not identify the application by itself. The executable name, Event Viewer entry and installer information determine whether the fault belongs to one program or to a shared Windows component. Follow the manual steps below in order; stop when the application starts normally.

What error 0x000036C3 means
Windows uses Side-by-Side assemblies to load application components and their manifests. A manifest is XML metadata that describes an application assembly and the dependencies it expects. For this error, the assembly element contains a default namespace that is not the required urn:schemas-microsoft-com:asm.v1 namespace.

The invalid namespace can result from a malformed manifest, a file changed during installation, corruption, or an application packaged with an incompatible component. The code commonly appears in a dialog such as “Windows cannot start this application,” during startup, or immediately after an application is installed or updated.

Because the code describes the manifest condition rather than the program, it is not enough to search for or replace a file named 0x000036C3. You need to determine which executable triggered the SxS event. The code alone also does not establish that a computer is infected or that every application on the computer is damaged.
Capture the exact failure before changing anything
Write down the application name, executable name, Windows edition and build, and the point at which the message appears. Note whether it happens at sign-in, when opening one game or utility, after an update, or when several unrelated programs launch. This information determines whether to focus on one installation or on Windows itself.
Find the SideBySide event
- Press Windows, type Event Viewer, and open it.
- In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and select Application.
- Use Filter Current Log… if necessary, or sort by date and time, then locate a SideBySide event recorded when the dialog appeared.
- Open the event and read the General and Details tabs. Record the application or executable path, event text, and any referenced assembly or dependency.
Keep the complete event text. A vendor can often correct a bad manifest only when it knows the exact executable, application version and dependency named by the event.

Classify the scope

Repair the application named in the event
Use Windows’ Repair option when available
- Open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps on Windows 11, or the equivalent installed-apps view in Windows 10.
- Find the affected application, select its menu, and choose Advanced options when that entry is provided.
- Select Repair. This attempts to correct the installation without removing the application’s data, although the exact behavior depends on the app package.
- Restart Windows and launch the application again. If the same event returns, continue with the installer repair or reinstall procedure.
Not every desktop program exposes Advanced options or Repair. If the option is absent, do not remove random files from the application folder. Use the program’s own maintenance or repair entry, if supplied, or proceed to a clean reinstall using the vendor’s current installer.
Run the vendor installer’s repair function
Some installers offer Repair, Modify or a similar maintenance choice when you run the original setup package. Select the repair action, allow it to finish, restart Windows, and test the same operation that produced the error. Keep the installer source and application version recorded alongside the Event Viewer details.
Reinstall when repair does not replace the manifest
- Back up application-specific saves, profiles or settings if the software stores them locally.
- Uninstall the affected application through Settings > Apps > Installed apps, or through the application’s own uninstaller.
- Restart Windows if the uninstaller requests it.
- Download a current installer from the software vendor’s official site or use the trusted distribution channel from which you obtained the program. Do not use a manifest file copied from an unrelated download.
- Install the program again, then test it before restoring optional modifications or third-party add-ons.
A reinstall is particularly appropriate when the error started immediately after an interrupted installation, an update, or a manual change to the application directory. If the current installer produces the same manifest event, send the vendor the exact event text rather than repeatedly reinstalling.

Repair Windows component corruption
Use these checks when several unrelated applications fail, when Event Viewer points to a shared Windows component, or when repairing the named application has not resolved the problem. DISM and System File Checker are general Windows integrity measures; they are not documented as a code-specific cure for 0x000036C3.

- Right-click the Start button and open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Enter the command below and press Enter:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthLet the operation reach completion. Closing the terminal before DISM finishes can leave the repair incomplete. The command services the currently running Windows installation; it does not reinstall individual applications.
Run System File Checker
- In the same elevated terminal, enter:
sfc /scannow- Wait for verification to reach 100 percent and read the final message.
- Restart Windows, even if the result says that no integrity violations were found.
- Try the application again and check whether a new SideBySide event is created.
Running SFC after DISM gives Windows the intended order for repairing protected system files. If the application still fails, compare the new event with the original one and return to the application’s installer or vendor support rather than repeating commands indefinitely.

Use the result to choose the next branch
Only one program still fails
If Windows starts normally and other applications work, keep troubleshooting confined to the named program. Confirm that you installed a current version, use its repair or reinstall process, and provide the vendor with the executable path, application version, Windows build and full SideBySide event. A manifest-level defect may require the vendor to correct its package or dependency; a Windows reset is disproportionate when the failure is isolated.
Several programs still fail
Record whether the affected programs share a common runtime or installation event, then capture fresh Event Viewer entries after the DISM and SFC restart. Give those entries to Microsoft support or the relevant software vendors. Do not assume that every failing application has the same damaged file simply because the hexadecimal code is identical.

Stop using the same installer package if it repeatedly recreates the invalid manifest. Verify the application version and source, test the vendor’s newer installer, and ask the vendor whether a known packaging or dependency issue affects your Windows build. Include the date and time of the latest event so support can distinguish old entries from the current failure.

What not to do
- Do not delete arbitrary files from WinSxS. The component store contains files used by Windows servicing; manual deletion can create additional servicing failures.
- Do not replace a manifest with one downloaded from an untrusted site. A manifest must match the executable and its dependencies, and an unrelated file can make the application less stable or unsafe.
- Do not use registry-cleaner instructions as a first response. A registry change cannot reliably correct an invalid application manifest, and an incorrect edit can prevent other software from starting.
- Do not treat a printer symptom as proof of this code. A printer that is offline, disconnected or using an unsuitable driver needs printer-specific troubleshooting unless Event Viewer confirms a SideBySide event.
- Do not keep retrying a broken installer without preserving evidence. Repeated attempts can overwrite useful logs and make it harder for the vendor to identify the original package failure.
Printer problems need a separate workflow
When the only symptom is that a printer is offline, unavailable or unable to print, use Microsoft’s Get Help printer troubleshooter and follow its printer connection and driver checks. Those steps address printer-specific conditions and should not be substituted for the SxS workflow unless the same failure also produces a SideBySide event with 0x000036C3.
Microsoft’s offline-printer guidance notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That lifecycle date can affect how long you receive fixes and support for a Windows 10 system, but it does not explain why a manifest has the wrong namespace. Treat the support status and the manifest error as separate issues.
Prepare an escalation packet
If the steps above do not restore the application, send a concise evidence bundle instead of a description such as “Windows is broken.” Include:
- The exact hexadecimal code and the complete dialog text.
- The application name, executable path and application version.
- The Windows edition, version and build number.
- When the error first appeared and whether it followed an installation, update or system change.
- The full SideBySide event text from Windows Logs > Application, including referenced assemblies or dependencies.
- Whether one application or several unrelated applications fail.
- The results of the application repair or reinstall, DISM, and
sfc /scannow. - The installer source and the date on which you downloaded it.
This information lets the software vendor determine whether its XML manifest or dependency packaging is invalid and lets Windows support distinguish application packaging from component-store corruption.
