Error 0x00003A99 means ERROR_EVT_INVALID_QUERY. Windows has accepted the Event Log channel name, but it cannot parse or accept the query sent to that channel. In Event Viewer, the practical fix is to correct or rebuild the XML/XPath filter and verify every channel name. If the code appears in Windows Update, Windows Setup, or a crash message instead, use the workflow for that context rather than assuming it is an Event Viewer query problem.
What error 0x00003A99 means
Microsoft’s Event Log Remoting Protocol defines the condition as: “If the channel is valid, and the non-null query parameter is invalid, the server will return ERROR_EVT_INVALID_QUERY (0x00003A99).” In plain language, Windows recognized the log channel but rejected the query used to read or filter it.

The code belongs to the Windows Event Log error family. It usually points to a query-definition problem such as malformed XML, an invalid XPath expression, a misspelled or nonexistent channel, an incorrect Query/Select structure, or a saved custom view whose syntax is no longer valid. The code identifies the invalid-query boundary; it does not identify one guaranteed bad character or one specific broken file.
What the code does not prove
- It is not, by itself, proof of malware or a damaged Windows installation.
- It is not a blue-screen diagnosis. A crash screen has its own stop-code and driver investigation.
- It does not prove that a hard drive, graphics card, or other hardware is failing.
- It does not mean every Event Viewer log is broken. A single custom view can be invalid while normal channels still work.
First identify where the code appears
The same hexadecimal value can be displayed by different Windows components. Record the complete message, the window or log that shows it, your Windows edition and build, and what action triggered it before changing anything.

Repair an invalid Event Viewer query
Work from a known-good channel and increase complexity gradually. This separates a bad channel name from a bad query expression.
1. Confirm that Event Viewer is the source
- Open Event Viewer by pressing
Windows, typingEvent Viewer, and selecting the desktop app. - Note whether the error occurs when opening a standard log, selecting Filter Current Log, creating a Custom View, or loading a previously saved view.
- In the left pane, expand Windows Logs and choose a standard channel such as Application or System. These names must be used exactly as shown; channel names are not interchangeable.
2. Build a minimal Custom View
- In Event Viewer, select Custom Views.
- Choose Create Custom View….
- Start with the simplest time range and event-level choices available. Do not add complex providers, event IDs, keywords, or XPath predicates yet.
- Apply the view. If it succeeds, the channel and basic filter path are usable; the failing part is likely an additional condition in the original query.
3. Inspect the XML tab
Open the XML tab in the Custom View dialog and check the complete structure. A valid query has a closed QueryList, one or more closed Query elements with an Id, and Select elements whose Path values match real channels.

</QueryList>This is a structural example for the Application channel, not a replacement for a query that targets a different log. Check for missing closing tags, mismatched quotation marks, invalid characters, an empty or duplicated query ID, and a Path that does not appear in the Event Viewer tree.

4. Verify every channel path
The channel in Query Path and each Select Path must be an actual channel name. A path copied from another computer, an old Windows installation, or a forum post may not exist on your system. Test one channel at a time instead of mixing several paths while troubleshooting.
5. Simplify the XPath expression
Replace a complex predicate with a wildcard selection, save or run the view, and then add one condition at a time. For example, first test *; next add a single event ID or level condition; then add provider, task, keyword, or time restrictions. The first addition that reproduces 0x00003A99 identifies the fragment to rewrite.
Pay particular attention to parentheses and brackets, quoted values, comparison operators, and XML escaping. A character that is legal in ordinary text may need to be represented differently inside XML or XPath. Treat these as inspection points rather than assuming one character is always responsible.

6. Recreate a saved view that remains broken
- If possible, export or copy the original XML so you can compare it later.
- Create a new Custom View from a minimal query that works.
- Re-enter the needed conditions manually, testing after each addition.
- Save the new view under a different name until you have confirmed that it opens repeatedly.
Recreating the view is preferable to repeatedly editing an opaque saved definition. It also preserves a working baseline if a later condition fails.

PowerShell can show whether the channel is readable independently of the Event Viewer interface. Open PowerShell and run:

Get-WinEvent -LogName Application -FilterXPath '*[System[(Level=2)]]' -MaxEvents 20Use the exact channel name reported by Event Viewer. If the basic command works but a filtered command fails, focus on the XPath rather than Windows Event Log access. Avoid pasting unverified XML or commands from a forum; compare each element with the channel and syntax you have tested.
If only one custom view fails
A view that fails while Application and System open normally is usually a defective saved definition. Preserve its XML if you need the original conditions, then rebuild it from a minimal working view. If every standard channel produces an error, capture the full text and Windows build before making broader changes; the short hexadecimal code does not distinguish every possible Event Log configuration problem.

When 0x00003A99 appears in Windows Update
Do not assume that the Event Log definition is the cause when the code is displayed by an updater. Record the update name or KB number, the complete message, and the surrounding Windows Update history first.

Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete, restart the computer, and return to Windows Update to check again.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Go to Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters.
- Select Windows Update, then choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Restart when it finishes and check for updates again.
If the update still fails, retain the update name, KB number, full message, and relevant log context. Those details are more useful than treating 0x00003A99 as proof that a Custom View must be repaired.
When it appears during Windows installation or upgrade
During setup, the short code may be only one symptom in a longer failure message. Microsoft’s general upgrade guidance begins with removing nonessential external hardware, checking for permissions problems, and running the Windows Update troubleshooter.
- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, external drives, docks, and other peripherals.
- Confirm that the account running setup has the permissions required for the upgrade.
- Run the Windows Update troubleshooter using the Windows 11 or Windows 10 path above.
- Retry the installation.
- If it fails again, record the complete setup message, Windows edition, current version, target version, and build number. Do not rely on 0x00003A99 alone to identify the failing component.
When the computer crashes or shows a stop screen
0x00003A99 is not, by itself, evidence of a blue screen. For repeated crashes or unexpected restarts, note the actual stop code and any driver filename shown on screen.
- Remove newly added hardware and test whether the restarts stop.
- Try Safe Mode if Windows cannot remain stable during a normal start.
- Investigate the named driver or the actual stop code rather than using 0x00003A99 as a hardware diagnosis.
If the crash screen does not show a usable stop code, photograph it or write down the complete wording before restarting. The context determines whether the next step concerns a driver, hardware, or software component.

What information to collect if the error persists
- Windows 11 or Windows 10, edition, and full build number.
- The exact screen or application displaying 0x00003A99.
- The complete accompanying message, not only the hexadecimal value.
- The channel name, saved-view name, and XML query if Event Viewer is involved.
- Whether a minimal query such as an unfiltered Application query succeeds.
- For updates or setup, the update name or KB number and the surrounding failure details.
- For crashes, the actual stop code, named driver, newly added hardware, and whether Safe Mode changes the behavior.
