Capture the context before changing anything
Accurate context prevents applying an activation repair to an update failure or changing a driver when an application is actually responsible. Record these details while the message is visible:
- The complete error text, including any title, button labels, or additional number.
- The exact page or application that displayed it: Windows Setup, Windows Update, Activation, the sign-in screen, a game or launcher, or a device utility.
- What Windows was doing: installing, upgrading, activating, booting, restarting, launching an application, or recovering from a crash.
- Whether the error happens once or every time you repeat the same action.
- Recent changes such as a new USB device, graphics or audio driver, application, security product, update, or hardware upgrade.
- Your Windows edition and build. Press
Windows key + R, typewinver, and press Enter; record the version and build shown. - The time of the failure. This lets you match the event with entries in Event Viewer if escalation is needed.
If the message disappears quickly, photograph the screen with a phone. Do not rely on memory for a long hexadecimal string or omit text that appears before or after the code.
Safe first steps for any context
These checks do not assume what the code means and are appropriate before more invasive troubleshooting.
- Save work and restart Windows. Choose Start > Power > Restart, not Shut down followed immediately by a power-on. A restart reloads Windows components and drivers. Microsoft notes that many unexpected restart problems are resolved by restarting and require no further action.
- Disconnect nonessential hardware. - Install pending Windows updates. On Windows 11, use Settings > Windows Update. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update. Restart when requested, then repeat the operation that produced the code.

If 0x00853A75 appears during setup or an update
Retry with a minimal hardware configuration
Leave only essential input and display devices connected. Remove USB storage, printers, scanners, external drives, and docking hardware. Restart, sign in, and launch the same setup or update again. If it succeeds, reconnect devices one at a time after Windows is stable so that a repeat failure can be associated with a specific device.
Confirm the operation and build
Use winver to record the installed build. Note whether the failure is an in-place Windows upgrade, a monthly update, or software setup running inside Windows. A code shown by a third-party installer belongs to that installer until its vendor confirms otherwise; do not assume Windows Update generated it.
Check storage and pending restarts
Review Settings > System > Storage (Windows 11) or Settings > System > Storage (Windows 10), remove only files you recognize as safe to remove, and complete any restart requested by Windows Update. Retry once. If the exact same step fails again, preserve the message and time rather than repeatedly starting the installer.
When setup still fails
Record the complete setup screen, recent hardware or software changes, Windows edition and build, and whether removing peripherals changed the result. Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows setup or upgrade failure, or the application/device vendor if its installer displayed the message. If it appears during Windows activation

Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Approve the administrator prompt if Windows requests elevated permission.
- Read the result and follow the action it provides. Retry activation only after the troubleshooter finishes.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot.
- Provide administrator approval when prompted and complete the guided checks.
Microsoft makes this troubleshooter available only when Windows is not activated. If it is absent because Windows is already activated, the code may belong to another operation. If the tool cannot fix the issue, use Microsoft’s activation support route and provide your edition, build, account or license history, and the full message. Do not enter a product key found on an untrusted website.

Unexpected restarts can involve hardware, drivers, or software. The objective is to determine whether Windows can remain stable with a minimal set of drivers and services, then identify a recent change.
Start Windows in Safe Mode
From a working desktop, hold Shift while selecting Start > Power > Restart. Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option shown on screen. If Windows cannot reach the desktop, enter the same recovery menus from Windows installation media as described in the boot section below.
Use Safe Mode long enough to see whether the crash or restart recurs. Safe Mode loads a limited driver set. If the problem disappears there, a normal-start driver, service, or application is more likely than the Safe Mode components themselves; it is not proof of which item is responsible.
Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Look for warning icons and expand the device categories related to the failure, such as display adapters, network adapters, audio inputs and outputs, storage controllers, or USB controllers.
- Open the suspected device’s Properties and read the status message on the General tab.
- If the problem began after a driver change, use the Driver tab’s rollback option when it is available. Otherwise install a current driver supplied for the exact device and Windows edition, then restart.
Do not install a generic driver merely because its name resembles the device. If no warning icon exists and the crash is unrelated to a device change, continue with the software and recovery checks rather than forcing a driver replacement.

Check updates and available space
Install current Windows updates, restart, and verify adequate free space on the Windows drive. These checks address common causes of instability without assuming that 0x00853A75 identifies a particular driver.
Use recovery when instability continues
If crashes continue after Safe Mode and driver checks, use System Restore or another available recovery option from the Windows Recovery Environment. Choose a restore point created before the instability when one exists. Restore can change installed applications, drivers, and settings; review the affected items presented by Windows before confirming.

When the code appears before sign-in, treat it as a startup-recovery problem rather than an activation or application problem. You need Windows installation media that matches the installed Windows family and a way to start the affected PC from that media. If you do not have suitable media, create or obtain it from Microsoft using another working computer.
Enter the recovery environment
- Insert the Windows installation USB or DVD and start the affected computer from it. The boot-device key varies by manufacturer; use the hardware maker’s documented boot menu if the computer starts from its internal drive instead.
- At Windows Setup, choose the language and keyboard options, then select Repair your computer rather than beginning a new installation.
- Open Troubleshoot > Advanced options.
Try the least destructive recovery option first
Use the startup-repair choices presented for your installation. If the failure followed a recent change, choose System Restore and select a restore point from before the problem. Microsoft documents System Restore as a recovery route for boot failures, including situations involving a corrupted registry hive. A restore point may not exist, and restoring does not remove personal files, but it can remove recently installed programs, drivers, and updates.

Use Command Prompt only when directed
The recovery environment also offers Command Prompt for advanced startup repair. Drive letters can differ in recovery mode, and an incorrect command can damage an installation. Use commands supplied by Microsoft Support or the administrator responsible for the PC after identifying the correct Windows volume. Do not delete registry hives or other system files because a web page associates them with 0x00853A75.

If installation media cannot see the Windows drive, recovery options fail, or the PC repeatedly returns to the same screen, preserve the error text and seek Microsoft or hardware-vendor support. Continued retries can make diagnosis harder.
If only one application shows the code
Close the application and confirm whether Windows remains stable. Record the application name, version, exact operation, complete message, and time. Restart and install updates offered by that application’s publisher. If the application has a built-in repair or reset option, use the documented option for that product and back up any local data first.
When the code appears only in one game, launcher, utility, or device program, its publisher is the party most likely to know what the code represents. Send the publisher the captured text, winver result, recent changes, and any logs it requests. Do not label it a Windows activation failure unless the Windows Activation page also reports an activation problem.
Evidence to collect before escalation
- A photograph or copy of the complete message, not only

Contact Microsoft Support when the code appears in Windows setup, Windows Update, activation, startup, or recovery and the matching workflow does not resolve it. Contact the application or device vendor when its software displays the code and Windows otherwise works normally. Seek professional help promptly if the drive is not detected, the PC cannot remain powered on, or recovery actions risk data loss.
The hexadecimal value has no published Microsoft definition that supplies a code-specific success rate or guaranteed repair. A correct fix depends on the context you captured, the state of Windows, and any hardware or software change that preceded the failure.
