Windows 11
- Open Settings.
- Select System, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete and apply any changes it reports.
- Restart the computer, return to Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Update & Security, then Troubleshoot.
- Open Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Let it finish, apply the proposed changes, and restart Windows.
- Return to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates.

Apply the general installation checks
For an update or upgrade that still fails, follow the basic checks recommended for Windows installation problems:
- Disconnect nonessential external hardware such as removable drives, docks, printers, and other USB devices. Leave connected only the input devices and hardware required to operate the computer.
- Check that the account performing the operation has the permissions Windows requests. If the screen asks for administrator approval, use an account authorized to provide it.
- Verify that the computer has a working network connection and retry the supported update or installation flow.

If the computer restarts, freezes, or shows a stop screen

- Disconnect newly added hardware. Power down if necessary and remove hardware added shortly before the problem began. Do not open the computer or disconnect internal components unless you are qualified to do so.
- Start Windows in Safe Mode. Safe Mode loads a limited environment so you can determine whether the failure depends on a normal-startup driver or service. Use the recovery options shown by Windows if the computer cannot reach the desktop.

Logs are especially important because the code itself does not identify a component. For an upgrade failure, retain the setup logs created around the failed attempt. For Windows Update, retain the update and servicing logs referenced by Microsoft’s Windows Update guidance.
When you ask Microsoft or the computer or device maker for help, provide:
- The exact error text and a screenshot or photograph.
- The Windows edition, version, and OS build.
- The screen or application that displayed the code.
- The time of the failure and what happened immediately beforehand.
- Recent hardware, driver, application, or update changes.
- The relevant setup, update, or application logs.
- The steps already taken and the result of each step.
Keep an untouched copy of the logs. If support asks you to collect a fresh set, create a new copy rather than overwriting the original failure record.
