If it appears in a browser page with a phone number, payment demand, siren or looping audio, or a frozen-looking screen, treat it as a technical-support scam. Do not call the number, pay, or allow remote access. Close the page, clean up anything you were persuaded to install, and scan the PC. If the code appears during Windows activation, setup, Windows Update, or a genuine stop-screen restart without scam language, use the matching Windows troubleshooting path below instead.
First, identify where 0x0087633F appears
The location and behavior of the message matter more than the hexadecimal string. Microsoft says genuine error and warning messages never include phone numbers. A request to call “Microsoft support,” send money, install remote-control software, or share passwords is therefore a decisive scam signal.

No authoritative Microsoft page reviewed defines 0x0087633F, and an exact-code search found no documented Windows meaning. Do not download a “code-specific fix” or edit the registry based only on this number.
If a browser popup shows the code and a phone number
Handle the page as a scam, not as a Windows diagnostic. Microsoft states that it does not make unsolicited support calls or send unsolicited messages asking for personal or financial information. Scammers commonly use a convincing warning, a loud audio loop, and a fake lock screen to pressure you into calling.

1. Do not interact with the alert
- Do not call the displayed number, even if the page uses a Microsoft logo or says your files will be deleted.
- Do not enter a password, payment-card number, gift-card code, verification code, or remote-session code.
- Do not install a remote-access application at the caller’s request.
- Do not grant a caller control of the keyboard, mouse, or screen.
2. Close the browser without restoring the scam tab
- Try the browser’s normal close button or press Alt+F4.
- If the page prevents closing, press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select the browser process, choose End task, and confirm. End child browser processes if the window remains.
- Reopen the browser without restoring the previous session. If it offers to restore tabs, decline.
Do not click buttons inside the page to “unlock,” “scan,” or “renew” Windows. Those controls are part of the webpage and are not Windows recovery commands.
3. Remove software installed during the incident
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps > Apps & features on an older Windows 10 build).
- Sort by installation date and look for remote-access tools or other programs installed when the warning appeared.
- Uninstall software you did not intend to install. If a legitimate program was installed at the same time, verify its publisher before removing it.
- Restart Windows after uninstalling. If an uninstaller requests that you keep a remote session open, cancel the session instead.
If the software cannot be removed normally, disconnect from the internet, restart in Safe Mode, and try the uninstall again. Do not delete random program folders or registry entries as a substitute for an uninstaller.

Clean up after you called, paid, or granted access
Even if the popup is gone, assume that credentials or payment information may have been exposed when you interacted with a scammer. Work from a different, trusted device when possible.

- Change the password for the email account used on the PC first, then change passwords for banking, shopping, cloud storage, and game accounts.
- Use unique passwords and enable multifactor authentication where available.
- Sign out other sessions and review recent sign-ins, recovery addresses, forwarding rules, and newly added authentication devices.
- Contact your bank or card issuer immediately if you provided payment details or sent money. Ask what freezes, replacement cards, or transfers can be reversed.
- Report unauthorized transactions through the financial institution’s official channel, not a number supplied by the popup.
Scan and update Windows
- Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Scan options.
- Select Full scan and allow it to complete. Remove or quarantine anything Microsoft Defender identifies.
- Install pending security updates under Settings > Windows Update, then restart.
- Run another scan after updates if Defender reports that a threat was remediated or a restart is required.
A full Defender scan checks for malware; it does not prove that a scammer did or did not view information during a remote session. Account and financial steps are still necessary after access was granted.

Check for persistence
- Review Settings > Apps > Startup and disable unfamiliar entries.
- In Task Manager, inspect running processes and their file locations. Research a publisher before ending or deleting a process; many Windows processes have similar names.
- Check browser extensions and remove ones you did not install intentionally.
- Review notification permissions for websites in the browser and block unfamiliar sites that send repeated warnings.
Verify the Windows edition and build
If the message appeared in a genuine Windows screen and contained no scam indicators, identify the installed version before troubleshooting.
- Press Windows+R, type
winver, and press Enter. - Record the edition (such as Home or Pro), version, and OS build.
- Note whether Windows actually restarted, whether the code appeared before sign-in, and what you changed immediately beforehand.
This information separates an activation problem from an update or stop-code problem. The exact string still has no documented Microsoft definition, so the surrounding workflow is the useful diagnostic evidence.

When the code appears during Windows Update or installation
For a real upgrade or installation failure, start with Microsoft’s general Windows Update and installation troubleshooting rather than searching for a code-specific patch. Keep the computer connected to reliable power and back up important files before an upgrade.

- Disconnect nonessential USB devices, docks, external drives, and printers during setup.
- Make sure the system drive has enough free space for the particular update or upgrade.
- Install all currently offered updates, restart, and try the operation again.
- Temporarily remove third-party security or system-tuning software only by using its official uninstall process; reinstall it after the upgrade succeeds.
- Confirm that the installer came from Microsoft or your organization’s approved deployment source. Do not use a download advertised as a fix for 0x0087633F.
If setup repeatedly rolls back
Record the exact point at which setup fails, the last successful restart, and any newly connected hardware. Disconnect peripherals, retry once, and consult Microsoft’s installation troubleshooting for the edition and build shown by winver. A browser page that appears during this process is still a browser page; it does not become an official Windows error because it uses the same code.

When the code appears in Activation settings
Activation failures have a separate workflow. Open Settings > System > Activation on Windows 11, or Settings > Update & Security > Activation on Windows 10, then select Troubleshoot when it is offered.
- Sign in with the Microsoft account associated with the digital license, if applicable.
- Confirm that the installed edition matches the license (for example, Home versus Pro).
- Run the Activation troubleshooter and apply only the changes it recommends.
- Restart and check the Activation page again.
If the troubleshooter cannot resolve the issue, or the code is not listed in Microsoft’s activation guidance, contact Microsoft through its official support channel. Do not use a phone number shown in a popup or on an unsolicited webpage.
When Windows restarts after a blue or black stop screen
A genuine stop error normally causes an automatic restart, may show a stop code, and often follows a driver, hardware, or software change. That behavior is different from a browser page pretending to lock the desktop.
Remove recent changes
- Shut down the PC and disconnect newly added hardware that is not required to boot.
- Undo a recently installed driver, utility, game anti-cheat component, or other system-level program if the restart began immediately afterward.
- Start Windows normally once. If it crashes again, continue with Safe Mode.
Enter Safe Mode
- Hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart from the sign-in or Start menu.
- Choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- Press 4 for Safe Mode or 5 for Safe Mode with Networking.
- In Safe Mode, uninstall the recent driver or program, then restart normally.
If Windows cannot stay running long enough to reach the menus, interrupt startup two or three times to open the Windows Recovery Environment, then use Troubleshoot > Advanced options. Choose System Restore only if a restore point predates the problem and you understand which applications and drivers may be removed.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. The operating system may continue to run, but standard security support has ended. If a Windows 10 PC displays this code, resolving the immediate scam or workflow problem is still important; separately, plan whether the hardware can move to Windows 11 or whether your organization has an appropriate supported option. Do not treat an unsupported Windows 10 installation as evidence that 0x0087633F is a real Windows diagnostic.

- Keep Windows and your browser updated.
- Use the browser’s built-in protections. Microsoft says Edge with SmartScreen can block known support-scam sites and pop-up loops, but no browser protection catches every malicious page.
- Block notification permission for unfamiliar websites instead of clicking their “virus” or “support” notifications.
- Download software and drivers from the developer or hardware maker’s official channel.
