Error 0x008C6A47 has no verified definition in the Microsoft documentation reviewed for Windows 10 and Windows 11. Do not apply a code-specific registry edit or assume the message means malware. The reliable fix depends on where the code appeared: during Windows Update or setup, after a crash or restart loop, or while installing, removing, or updating a desktop program. Identify that trigger first, then follow the matching procedure below.
What error 0x008C6A47 means
Microsoft’s published troubleshooting pages do not assign a documented component, cause, or official text description to 0x008C6A47. The 0x prefix shows a hexadecimal-style identifier, but the number alone does not tell you whether Windows Update, startup recovery, a driver, or an individual application generated it.

That uncertainty matters because the same-looking code can be displayed by different software. A setup screen, a blue-screen recovery page, and an application installer do not use the same repair path. The screen wording, the action you were taking, and whether Windows can still boot normally are more useful evidence than the number by itself.

- Useful evidence: the complete message, the program or update involved, your Windows edition and build, and what happened immediately before the code appeared.
Identify the trigger before changing anything
Use the wording around the code and the timing of the failure to choose one route. If more than one description seems to fit, start with the route that matches the screen currently blocking you.

Record the details Windows gives you
Before retrying a failed operation, photograph or copy the complete message instead of recording only the number. Note the application or update name, whether the failure is repeatable, and the exact point at which it occurs. These details prevent you from applying an update fix to an application problem or changing a driver when setup is the real cause.
- Press
Win+R, enterwinver, and record the Windows version and build shown. - Write down whether you are running Windows 10 or Windows 11 and whether the computer can reach the desktop normally.
- Disconnect removable storage only after any needed files are safely copied. Do not interrupt an update that is actively installing.
- If the code appears again, record the time and the action immediately before it. Windows Update history, the application’s own log, or the recovery screen may identify the failing stage even though they do not explain the code itself.
Back up important personal files before using recovery options, uninstalling a driver, or repeating an upgrade. If the machine is encrypted, make sure you can access the recovery information required by your organization or Windows account.
Route A: the code appeared during Windows Update, an upgrade, or setup
1. Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down or restart Windows and unplug devices that are not required to complete the update: USB storage, printers, scanners, cameras, docking stations, and other peripherals. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and any hardware needed to boot. A device or its driver can interfere with setup even when the code does not identify that device.
2. Restart and run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run.
- In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply any correction it reports, restart when requested, and check for the update again.
The troubleshooter addresses common update conditions; it does not prove that 0x008C6A47 has a particular Microsoft meaning. If it reports that no problem was found, continue with the compatibility checks rather than repeatedly launching the same update.
3. Check software and driver compatibility
Temporarily remove or update software that was installed immediately before the failure, especially system utilities that change startup behavior, security settings, or hardware drivers. Check the computer manufacturer’s support information for drivers intended for your exact model and Windows version. Do not install a driver from an unrelated model merely because its name looks similar.

Retry the update with nonessential peripherals still disconnected. If it completes, reconnect devices one at a time and restart between additions; this gives you a practical way to identify a device that reintroduces the failure.
4. Follow Microsoft’s deeper Windows Update procedure
If the basic troubleshooter does not resolve the failure, use Microsoft’s current “Troubleshoot problems updating Windows” and “Get help with Windows upgrade and installation errors” procedures for your edition. Their steps vary by Windows release and by whether the operation is an in-place upgrade, a normal quality update, or a feature update, so do not substitute instructions written for a different release.

5. Check servicing-stack guidance when it applies
Microsoft Learn documents cases in which a matching Servicing Stack Update (SSU) from the Microsoft Update Catalog is needed before another update can install. Use the package that matches your Windows version, architecture, and release; an SSU for a different system is not a safe substitute. If the documentation for your build does not call for a separate SSU, do not install one solely because the hexadecimal code is unfamiliar.
6. If setup repeatedly rolls back
Let the rollback finish, restart, and record the exact stage and message. Remove the nonessential hardware again, verify compatibility, and use Microsoft’s upgrade and installation troubleshooting path before attempting another upgrade. Repeatedly forcing power off during rollback can leave Windows unable to boot and turns an update problem into a recovery problem.
Route B: the code appeared after a crash, blue screen, black screen, or restart loop
1. Remove hardware added immediately before the failure
Power the computer down and disconnect a newly installed expansion card, USB device, storage device, dock, or other hardware. If removing it restores normal startup, leave it disconnected until its manufacturer provides a compatible driver or firmware update. If the machine remains in a loop, continue to Safe Mode rather than repeatedly selecting normal startup.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. From the sign-in screen, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. In the recovery menu choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select a Safe Mode option. If Windows cannot reach that menu, use Windows Recovery Environment from recovery media or the recovery options offered by the computer manufacturer.

If the code disappears there, a recently changed driver, startup program, or service is more likely than a failure that affects only the Safe Mode environment.
3. Undo the most recent driver or software change
In Safe Mode, uninstall a program added immediately before the crashes. For a recently changed device driver, open Device Manager, open the relevant device’s properties, and use the available option to roll back the driver when Windows offers it. If rollback is unavailable, uninstalling the device and then restarting lets Windows rediscover it; use the hardware manufacturer’s instructions if a specific driver is required.
Change one item at a time and restart normally after each change. That keeps the result interpretable and makes it possible to reverse the change if the symptom worsens.
4. Use Windows recovery and Startup Repair when normal boot fails
Windows Recovery Environment provides Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair, System Restore when restore points exist, and other recovery choices. Microsoft’s “Windows startup issues troubleshooting” guidance also documents installation-media and command-line methods for systems that cannot reach the normal recovery menus. Follow the instructions for your Windows release and preserve personal files before using any reset or reinstall option.

Do not assume that a successful Startup Repair identifies the meaning of 0x008C6A47; it only indicates that Windows repaired a startup condition well enough to boot. If the restart loop returns, record which recovery action worked and which driver or program was changed before the next failure.
Route C: the code appeared while installing, removing, or updating a desktop program
1. Restart before trying the operation again
Close the installer, save work, and restart Windows. A pending reboot, locked file, or incomplete previous removal can block the next attempt without making the application itself defective.
2. Use Repair, then Reset, from Installed apps
- Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps in Windows 11. In Windows 10, the page may be labeled Apps & features.
- Select the affected program and choose Advanced options when that link is available.
- Select Repair and test the program or update after Windows finishes.
- If Repair does not help and the option exists, select Reset. Reset can remove the application’s local data and settings, so copy anything the publisher says you need first.
Some traditional desktop programs do not expose Repair or Reset in Settings. For those applications, use the installer or uninstaller supplied by the publisher rather than deleting the program folder manually.
3. Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter
Microsoft’s “Fix problems that block programs from being installed or removed” troubleshooter is intended for blocked installations and removals. Run it when the program cannot be installed, uninstalled, or updated through its normal setup process. Follow its prompts for the specific program and restart afterward if requested.
4. Escalate an application-only failure to the publisher
If Windows Update works, other programs install normally, and only one application produces the code, provide that application’s name, version, installer type, complete message, Windows build, and any log file requested by its publisher. The application maker can identify errors generated by its own installer; Microsoft’s general Windows pages cannot define an undocumented code emitted by a third-party program.

If none of the three routes fits
Do not guess at the code’s meaning. Return to the exact screen and classify the event by what was happening immediately before it. A code shown after a reboot may be a consequence of the failed update or driver rather than the original cause.
- Check Settings > Windows Update > Update history (or the equivalent Windows 10 page) for the update name and failure time.
- For a program failure, check the application’s installation, update, or crash log and note the version number.
- For repeated restarts, record whether Safe Mode works and which hardware or driver was changed before the first crash.
- Keep a single timeline of restarts, repairs, and results. It prevents repeated changes from hiding the original trigger.
Contact Microsoft Support for a Windows Update, upgrade, startup, or recovery failure. Contact the application publisher when one program alone fails. Give the support technician the complete message and the Windows build instead of reporting only 0x008C6A47.

Menu names can change with feature updates and device-management policies. If a path is missing, search Settings for “troubleshoot,” “recovery,” or “installed apps,” then use the equivalent page for your build.
Safe practices and common mistakes
- Do not download a “fix” that claims to decode this number or asks you to replace system files.
- Do not delete registry entries or Windows folders solely because a forum associates them with a different hexadecimal code.
- Do not install an SSU, driver, or firmware package that does not match your Windows release and hardware.
- Do not repeatedly hard-power-off during an update rollback or recovery operation.
- Do not treat the code as proof of malware. The available Microsoft documentation does not establish that connection.
