How to Fix Error 0x008E46AF on Windows 11 and 10

Error 0x008E46AF has no verified Microsoft definition or standard stop-code name. A hexadecimal string by itself cannot tell you whether Windows is reporting a blue-screen stop error, an application crash, an installer failure, or an event-log value. The reliable fix is to identify exactly where it appears, preserve the surrounding message, and then use the troubleshooting path that matches that context.

Before changing drivers, uninstalling software, or resetting Windows, record the complete wording, the screen color, the application or installer involved, when the error appears, and any named file, driver, or module. Microsoft’s general guidance for unexpected restarts is that hardware, a device driver, or software can be responsible; the steps below narrow those possibilities without assuming that 0x008E46AF identifies one particular fault.

What error 0x008E46AF means

No authoritative Microsoft page currently defines 0x008E46AF as a specific Windows stop code, DLL error, driver failure, or named bug. Treat the value as a clue, not a diagnosis. The same-looking hexadecimal value can be displayed by different components, and the surrounding text determines which repair path is appropriate.

It is not automatically a blue-screen code

A blue or black screen with a restart message is one possible context, but the code may instead appear in a game or desktop application, during Windows Setup, in Windows Update, or in Event Viewer. Do not label it a “BSOD code” unless the screen actually stopped Windows and displayed a stop-error message. A pop-up from one program needs a different investigation from a restart that occurs before sign-in.

Why the context changes the fix

Where you see 0x008E46AF What to capture First useful direction
Blue or black crash screen, unexpected restart, or repeated boot failure Stop-message wording, named driver or module, time of restart, and whether new hardware was added Remove recent hardware, start Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, check storage and updates
One application or game Application name and version, action that triggers the crash, and any DLL or module name Test in Safe Mode or a clean Windows session, then investigate a named device or system component rather than changing every driver
Windows Setup or Windows Update Update number or setup stage, peripherals connected, and the complete failure text Disconnect nonessential devices, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, verify services, clear the update cache when appropriate, and run System File Checker
Event Viewer or a log entry only Log name, event source, event ID, timestamp, and the full event description Correlate the event with a crash, update, or application launch before treating it as the cause

If all you have is “0x008E46AF,” there is not enough evidence to identify a particular driver, DLL, or hardware component safely.

Capture the evidence before making changes

Write down or photograph the message before restarting. Include the date and time so you can match it with Windows logs later. Keep the exact capitalization and punctuation of any file or module name; a name such as a driver file can be more useful than the hexadecimal value.

  • Trigger: note whether it happens during boot, sign-in, shutdown, a specific game or app, Windows Update, or installation.
  • Display: record whether the screen is blue, black, or a normal desktop dialog.
  • Frequency: state whether it happened once, after every restart, or only after a repeatable action.
  • Recent changes: list hardware, peripherals, Windows updates, drivers, applications, or security settings added immediately before the first occurrence.
  • Named component: copy any driver, DLL, executable, stop-message name, event source, or event ID.

These details let you undo the most likely recent change first and preserve a useful diagnostic signal. Avoid broad “cleanup” or registry changes before you know which context you are fixing.

Fixes for a crash, restart, or stop error

1. Remove hardware added just before the failures

Microsoft advises shutting down and removing newly added hardware when an unexpected stop error begins after an installation. Disconnect the new device, dock, adapter, expansion card, or other nonessential hardware, then start Windows again. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time and restart between tests. This identifies the trigger without replacing unrelated components.

For a desktop expansion card or an internal device, shut down completely and follow the manufacturer’s handling instructions. If you cannot safely remove an internal component, leave it installed and continue with Safe Mode and Device Manager rather than guessing at a replacement.

2. Start Windows in Safe Mode

Safe Mode loads a limited set of drivers and services. If the code does not appear there, a normal-startup driver, service, or application is more likely than the basic Windows installation itself.

  1. In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
  2. Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. Save open work first.
  3. On the recovery screen, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  4. After the restart, choose 4 or F4 for Safe Mode. Choose 5 or F5 only when you specifically need networking.

Use Safe Mode to remove a recently installed driver or application, inspect Device Manager, and copy logs or dump files. If the machine is stable there but crashes during a normal boot, do not conclude that the hexadecimal value identifies a hardware failure; the difference is evidence about what loads during normal startup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Check Device Manager and change one suspect device at a time

Right-click Start and open Device Manager. Expand categories related to the component named in the message and look for a yellow warning icon. Also check devices added immediately before the failures.

  1. Right-click the suspected device and choose Properties. Read the status message on the General tab and note the driver provider and version on the Driver tab.
  2. Select Update driver and allow Windows to search, or install a driver supplied for that exact device and Windows edition by its manufacturer.
  3. Restart and test the same action that produced 0x008E46AF.
  4. If the update does not help and the timing points to this device, return to Device Manager, choose Disable device, restart, and test again. If necessary, choose Uninstall device, restart, and let Windows redetect it.

Change only the device supported by your evidence. Updating every driver at once removes the diagnostic signal and can introduce several new variables. If disabling a device makes the symptom disappear, leave it disabled temporarily and obtain a known-compatible driver rather than repeatedly installing unrelated driver packages.

4. Make sure the system drive has adequate free space

Low disk space can interfere with updates, temporary files, paging, and crash-dump creation. Microsoft’s stop-error guidance gives a practical target of 10% to 15% free space on the Windows drive. In File Explorer, open This PC and check the drive that contains Windows. Remove or move files you recognize, empty the Recycle Bin, and use Windows’ built-in temporary-file cleanup carefully. Do not delete folders or files whose purpose you cannot identify.

5. Install pending Windows updates

After the machine is stable enough to use Settings, open Settings > Windows Update in Windows 11 or Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update in Windows 10. Select Check for updates, install applicable updates, and restart when prompted. Test again after the restart, noting whether the failure began only after a particular update.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the error started immediately after an update, record its name and date before removing anything. Use the recovery and update options described below rather than deleting update files at random.

6. Use System Restore when the timing is clear

If a restore point predates the first occurrence, System Restore can roll back system files, drivers, and settings without removing personal documents. Open Control Panel > Recovery > Open System Restore, select a suitable restore point, and review the affected programs before confirming. If Windows will not start normally, enter Windows Recovery options through Advanced startup and select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.

System Restore is most useful when you can identify a before-and-after change. It does not establish what 0x008E46AF means, and it may not resolve a fault caused by hardware that remains connected.

When 0x008E46AF appears during Windows Setup or Windows Update

1. Disconnect nonessential peripherals

Shut down if possible and disconnect USB storage, printers, scanners, docks, card readers, and other peripherals that are not required for the update. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the hardware Windows needs to start. Retry the update or setup. Reconnect devices after the operation succeeds, one at a time, if you need to identify a trigger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter

In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Apply a suggested repair, restart, and try the update again. Record any message the troubleshooter cannot resolve.

3. Verify that update services are running

Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter. Locate Windows Update and Background Intelligent Transfer Service. Their status should not be permanently stopped while an update is being downloaded. If a service is stopped, right-click it and choose Start; use Restart if it is already running but appears stuck. Do not change unrelated service startup settings as a general experiment.

4. Clear the SoftwareDistribution cache only for an update workflow

A damaged update download can be cleared after the troubleshooter and service check point to the update cache. This procedure requires an elevated Command Prompt and temporarily stops update services.

Investigate repeated crashes with logs and dump files

Preserve a dump before changing the system further

For recurring stop errors, look for small memory-dump files in C:WindowsMinidump. The presence, timestamp, and named module can connect a crash to a device or driver. Copy any relevant file to another location before running cleanup tools. Also note the matching time in Event Viewer under Windows Logs > System; an event that occurs at the same time is supporting evidence, not automatically the cause.

If no dump exists, check that Windows is configured to write a small memory dump and that the system drive has the free space needed to create it. Do not infer a driver fault merely because a generic system event appears after a forced restart.

Use Driver Verifier only for a specific suspect

Driver Verifier is an advanced diagnostic tool for suspicious third-party or unsigned drivers. Microsoft warns not to verify all drivers at one time because doing so can degrade performance or make Windows unusable. Select a small group tied to your evidence, reproduce the failure, and then read the resulting dump.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Before enabling it, make sure you know how to reach Safe Mode and have a recovery route. If Driver Verifier prevents normal startup, enter Safe Mode, open an elevated Command Prompt, and run:

verifier /reset

Restart after the reset. Do not leave broad verification enabled after the test is complete, and do not use it as a first step when the code appeared only once.

If Windows will not start normally

Use another working computer to record the exact message if necessary, then enter Windows Recovery options from the sign-in screen by holding Shift while selecting Restart, or by using the Advanced startup path in Settings when Windows remains usable. From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, choose the least destructive option that matches your evidence:

  • Startup Settings: start Safe Mode so you can remove or disable a suspect driver.
  • System Restore: return to a restore point made before the first failure.
  • Command Prompt: run the update-cache or file-check commands when Windows cannot reach the desktop.
  • Other recovery options: use the available Windows recovery workflow only after preserving personal files and recording the error.

A recovery reset or reinstall is a last resort for this code because the code has no verified standalone definition. First remove recent hardware, test Safe Mode, inspect the named device, check free space, and preserve logs. A reset can erase applications and settings while leaving the original hardware trigger unresolved.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choosing the next step without losing diagnostic evidence

Approach Best trigger context Reversibility Evidence gained Risk
Restart and retest after removing a recent peripheral Failure began after hardware was added High; reconnect later Whether the new device changes the symptom Low, provided shutdown and disconnection are safe
Safe Mode Repeated boot or normal-startup crash High Whether the fault depends on normal drivers and services Low
Targeted Device Manager update, disable, or uninstall A warning icon or named device/driver Usually reversible by reinstalling or re-enabling Whether one device changes the failure Moderate if the wrong device is changed
Windows Update troubleshooter and cache reset Setup or update failure High when performed as documented Service, download, and cache status Moderate; requires administrator access
System Restore Failure follows a clear software or driver change Reversible only by another restore operation Whether an earlier system state resolves it May remove recently installed applications or drivers
Driver Verifier Repeated crashes with a specific suspicious third-party driver Requires reset or Safe Mode if boot is affected More specific crash evidence in a dump High if all drivers are selected or the tool is left enabled

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Assuming the code names a known fault: no authoritative definition was found for 0x008E46AF, so do not assign it a made-up stop-code name.
  • Updating every driver: broad updates destroy the before-and-after comparison and can add new failures.
  • Deleting arbitrary Windows folders: clear SoftwareDistribution only in an update-troubleshooting sequence and only after stopping its services.
  • Running Driver Verifier on everything: Microsoft specifically cautions against verifying all drivers at once.
  • Replacing hardware immediately: first remove or disable the recently changed device and collect evidence.
  • Ignoring the application name: an error that appears only in one program should not be treated as a system-wide stop error without corroborating evidence.
  • Using a registry cleaner or generic driver pack: these broad changes are not supported by the available evidence and make the original cause harder to isolate.

When to seek further help

Escalate with a concise record rather than only the hexadecimal value. Include the full message, screen color, Windows edition (11 or 10), build if shown, trigger, recent changes, Device Manager status, free-space percentage, update history, Safe Mode result, and any dump-file or module name. State exactly which step changed the behavior and whether the change was reversible.

If the error persists after removing recent hardware, testing Safe Mode, checking a targeted device, maintaining adequate free space, installing updates, and applying the appropriate update or recovery procedure, the remaining possibilities include a component-specific driver, a damaged application, or hardware that requires manufacturer-level diagnosis. The evidence—not the 0x008E46AF string alone—should determine that next investigation.

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, adjust settings that affect CPU, RAM, and disk load, clean temporary and cache files, check Windows settings and missing updates, and provide tools such as real-time boost, file shredder, and app-crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a category-based free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription, and it complements antivirus software rather than replacing it. Results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
