Error 0x008F719C has no authoritative public definition in Microsoft’s support or Learn documentation. The hexadecimal value alone cannot identify a failed component or prove that a driver, update, or system file is responsible. Treat it as an unidentified Windows error until you record the complete message, where it appeared, what you were doing, and your Windows version and build.
Use the workflow that matches the symptom: the Windows Update troubleshooter for an update or installation failure; Safe Mode and Device Manager for crashes, restarts, or a suspected driver; and Windows file-repair and Update Catalog procedures if update repair still fails. The steps below apply to Windows 11 and Windows 10, with a separate lifecycle warning for Windows 10.

What error 0x008F719C means
There is no documented Microsoft explanation that maps 0x008F719C to one specific fault. A hexadecimal code is only useful when paired with its message and context. The same-looking code can be displayed by an installer, an application, a device-related failure, or a crash screen, and each situation requires a different troubleshooting path.
Do not infer that the code is automatically a virus, a bad driver, or corrupted Windows files. Do not download a replacement DLL or apply a registry edit simply because a web page associates the number with one of those causes. First establish which Windows component displayed it.

Record the context before changing anything
Write down the information below while the message is still visible. A screenshot is preferable, but a verbatim transcription also works.
- The complete message surrounding
0x008F719C, including any file name, application name, stop code, or KB number. - Whether it appeared in Windows Update, during setup, when launching a game or another application, or on a blue or black crash screen.
- The action that triggered it: installing an update, connecting hardware, launching software, waking the PC, or restarting.
- Whether the computer restarted, froze, or returned to the desktop.
- Your Windows edition, version, and build. Press
Windows key + R, enterwinver, and record the result. - Recently added hardware, drivers, applications, or security software.
- The exact time of the failure, so related entries can be found in Windows Update history or Event Viewer.
This record prevents you from applying a crash procedure to an installer problem, or a driver change to an unrelated application error.
Choose the correct repair branch
| Where the code appears | Most useful first workflow | Evidence to collect |
|---|---|---|
| Windows Update or Windows setup | Disconnect nonessential hardware, check permissions, run the Windows Update troubleshooter, restart, and check for updates again. | Update history, the Windows build, and the complete installation message. |
| Blue or black screen, automatic restart, or a crash after hardware changes | Remove newly added hardware, start in Safe Mode, inspect Device Manager, and update, disable, or uninstall the affected device. | Stop-screen text, restart timing, and Device Manager warning icons. |
| Application or game launch | Capture the application name and trigger, restart, and use the application vendor’s repair or support process while checking Windows event details. | Application version, executable name, crash time, and Event Viewer entries. |
| Intermittent or unexplained appearance | Compare behavior after a restart and in Safe Mode, then check update history, Device Manager, and free disk space. | Whether the issue reproduces, recent changes, and the Windows build. |
The two most useful comparison questions are whether the failure survives a restart and whether Safe Mode changes the symptom. A driver warning in Device Manager points toward the hardware branch; an entry in Windows Update history points toward the servicing branch.
Fix 0x008F719C during Windows Update or installation
1. Remove nonessential external hardware
Shut down the computer and disconnect external drives, USB hubs, printers, cameras, docking stations, and other accessories that are not required for the update. Leave the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and the hardware needed to boot. Reconnect devices one at a time after Windows updates successfully. A newly attached device can change the update or setup path, so this is a safe first isolation step.
2. Check account and installer permissions
Sign in with an account that has administrator rights. If a separate installer is failing, confirm that it came from a source you trust and use its documented administrator option rather than changing system permissions broadly. Do not take ownership of protected folders or disable security controls as a first response; those changes can create new failures and do not explain this unidentified code.

3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run. On current Windows 11 installations, Microsoft also exposes an automated Windows Update troubleshooter through the Get Help app; follow its prompts if that option is offered.
- Allow the troubleshooter to complete its checks and apply any corrections it reports.
- Restart the PC even if Windows does not explicitly require it.
- Return to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates.
4. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter in Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested correction, restart, and then open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and note whether the same message returns.
The menu names differ between the two Windows versions, but the sequence is the same: diagnose, restart, and retry rather than repeatedly selecting the failed operation without rebooting.
5. Check free space before retrying
Windows and applications need working space for downloaded packages, temporary files, and servicing operations. Microsoft’s stop-code guidance gives 10% to 15% free disk space as a practical target, although the exact requirement varies with the computer’s configuration and the update. Open File Explorer > This PC and check the system drive. If it is nearly full, remove or move files you no longer need, empty the Recycle Bin, and retry only after there is adequate space. Do not delete files from C:Windows or replace system files manually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors6. Inspect update history and identify the failed package
Open Settings > Windows Update > Update history in Windows 11. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update > View update history. Record the update name, KB number, date, and any accompanying error text. A specific KB number is more actionable than 0x008F719C because it lets you match the repair to your Windows build and architecture.
7. Repair Windows component and system-file corruption
If the troubleshooter and restart do not resolve the update, use Microsoft’s Windows Update repair guidance for checking and repairing Windows file corruption. A standard elevated command sequence is:
- Open Windows Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthand wait for it to finish. The progress can pause for an extended period. - Run
sfc /scannowand let verification reach 100%. - Restart Windows, then run Check for updates again.
Use an administrator terminal and do not close it while either operation is running. If a command reports that it cannot complete, keep the exact result with your other evidence instead of repeatedly rerunning it without changing the diagnosis.

8. Use the Microsoft Update Catalog only for a matching package
When Windows Update still fails and Update history identifies a specific KB, Microsoft’s Update Catalog can provide the corresponding servicing package. Match the download to the Windows version and build shown by winver, and select the correct system architecture. Installing an unrelated package can produce another failure, so do not search for the hexadecimal code alone and choose the first result. Restart after the installation and check Windows Update once more.

Do not download a DLL replacement from an unofficial site, import a registry file, or run a script that promises to eliminate 0x008F719C without identifying the component that produced it. Those actions can overwrite the wrong file, weaken system protections, or make later troubleshooting harder. The absence of an authoritative definition for this code makes targeted, context-based repair especially important.
Fix the error when Windows crashes or restarts
1. Remove recently added hardware
If the code appears on a blue or black screen, or the computer restarts after a hardware change, power down and remove the newly added device if that is safe to do. For an internal component, follow the manufacturer’s shutdown and antistatic instructions or have a qualified technician remove it. Reboot with the previous hardware configuration. If the crash stops, the device or its driver becomes the primary line of investigation.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services. From the sign-in screen or desktop, hold Shift while selecting Power > Restart. In the recovery menu, choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart, then select the Safe Mode option shown on screen. If the error does not occur in Safe Mode, a startup driver, service, or application is more likely to be involved than the basic Windows files loaded there.
3. Inspect Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the hardware involved, such as Display adapters, Network adapters, Sound, video and game controllers, Bluetooth, Universal Serial Bus controllers, or Printers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon, an unknown device, or a device that appeared immediately before the crashes.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the status message on the General tab. Record the device name and driver details before changing anything.
- Use the available Update driver, Disable device, or Uninstall device action according to the symptom. Disable or uninstall only the device you have identified, and restart after the change.
Microsoft’s stop-code workflow specifically recommends updating, disabling, or uninstalling the affected device when Device Manager points to a driver. If disabling the device stops the crash, leave it disabled temporarily and obtain the correct driver from the hardware manufacturer before re-enabling it.

4. Install pending Windows updates after stability returns
Once the system can remain running, install current Windows updates using the normal Windows Update page. If the update itself is what triggers the crash, note its KB number and pause further experimentation until you have captured the build, update history, and crash details. Repeated forced restarts can obscure which change caused the failure.
5. Use System Restore or another recovery option
If Safe Mode and the Device Manager change do not stop the crashes, use Troubleshoot > Advanced options in Windows Recovery Environment and select System Restore when a suitable restore point exists. Choose a point created before the hardware, driver, or software change. If no appropriate point is available, use the recovery option that matches your backup and installation situation, preserving personal files where the chosen option permits it. A recovery operation can remove recently installed applications or drivers, so read the confirmation screen before proceeding.
When the code appears while launching an application
An application-launch message does not establish that Windows Update or a device driver is at fault. Record the application and executable name, its version, whether it launches after a restart, and whether Safe Mode changes the symptom. Check the application’s own update, repair, or reinstall instructions and preserve any crash log it creates. Event Viewer can add useful timing information: right-click Start, open Event Viewer, and inspect Windows Logs > Application and Windows Logs > System around the recorded failure time.
If only one application fails while Windows remains stable, avoid system-wide registry cleaners, DLL download sites, and driver changes that are unrelated to that application. If several applications fail or the computer also restarts, return to the crash branch and check Safe Mode, Device Manager, free space, and Windows file integrity.
Is 0x008F719C a driver error or a corrupted-system-file error?
The code alone cannot answer that question. A driver is more plausible when the error follows a newly connected device, appears with a crash or restart, disappears in Safe Mode, or coincides with a warning icon in Device Manager. File corruption is more plausible when Windows Update repeatedly fails, component repair reports corruption, or several Windows features malfunction. These are indicators, not proof; use the matching workflow and keep the observed evidence.

Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft no longer provides free software updates through Windows Update, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The troubleshooting steps above may repair a current installation, but they do not restore an ongoing support channel. If the computer meets Windows 11 requirements, plan a supported upgrade; otherwise, weigh the security and compatibility implications of continuing to use Windows 10.
What to include when escalating the problem
Contact Microsoft or the affected application or hardware vendor only after collecting a reproducible record. Include:
- A screenshot or exact transcription of the full message, not just the hexadecimal code.
- The Windows edition, version, and build from
winver. - The action that triggered the failure and whether it survives a restart.
- Recently installed hardware, drivers, applications, or updates.
- Whether Safe Mode changes the symptom and what Device Manager reports.
- Windows Update history, including the KB number, or the relevant Event Viewer entries with timestamps.
- The exact repair steps already attempted and their reported results.
This information lets support staff select the correct Windows workflow instead of guessing from an undocumented number.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings adjustments, temporary-file cleanup, privacy checks, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder, and crash logging. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription. It complements an antivirus rather than replacing one, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Bottom line
Because 0x008F719C is not defined authoritatively, the surrounding message and symptom determine the repair. Use the Windows Update troubleshooter for installation failures, Safe Mode and Device Manager for crashes or suspected drivers, and Windows file-repair and matching Update Catalog packages only when the update evidence supports them. Keep a complete record for escalation, and factor Windows 10’s end-of-support status into any long-term decision.
