Error 0x00916453 has no verified public Microsoft definition. Until you know which application, installer, device, or log produced it—and confirm every digit—you cannot choose a reliable repair. Treat it as an unidentified hexadecimal value, decode it with Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, then follow the troubleshooting path for the message’s actual source. Do not apply random registry cleaners, driver packages, or “error-code fixes” that claim to know what this value means.
What error 0x00916453 means on Windows
Microsoft’s public documentation does not provide an authoritative mapping for 0x00916453. That does not prove the value is impossible or fraudulent. It may belong to a private vendor component, a particular application, an installer, or a newly introduced component that is not documented publicly. It may also be a transcription error: one digit, a leading zero, or the letter O being mistaken for zero can change the code completely.

Windows displays hexadecimal status values in many contexts, but the same-looking number does not automatically have the same meaning everywhere. A value in a Device Manager status dialog follows a different system from a value written by a game launcher, an installer, or an event log provider. The first repair step is therefore identification, not a system-wide “fix.”
Record the context before changing anything
Copy the message exactly before dismissing the dialog or restarting the computer. Capture a screenshot if possible, and write down when it appeared and what you were doing immediately beforehand. Your notes should include:

- The complete hexadecimal value, including the
0xprefix, capitalization, and any punctuation. - The full sentence surrounding the value, not just the number.
- The application, game, installer, device, or Windows component named in the message.
- Your Windows edition (for example, Windows 10 or Windows 11), version or build shown in Settings, and whether the message appeared after an update or hardware change.
- The exact time of the event and whether it happens every time or only under a particular action.
Compare the original message with your transcription character by character. A code such as 0x00916453 is not interchangeable with a similar-looking value that has a different digit count or order. Keep the original screenshot and text together; support staff can often identify the source from wording that a number alone cannot provide.
Identify where the code came from
Use the source of the message to select the next branch. This classification is more useful than guessing from the number’s appearance.

If you cannot tell which category produced the value, do not force it into Device Manager. Return to the screenshot, notification history, application log, or the action that preceded the message and establish the source first.

Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool, also called ERR, is designed to display the message associated with many hexadecimal status codes. Microsoft describes it as “a command-line tool to decode many Microsoft error codes.” The Microsoft Download Center lists version 6.4.5, published July 15, 2024.
Run the lookup
- Download the Error Lookup Tool version 6.4.5 from the Microsoft Download Center and extract the downloaded archive to a folder you can find again.
- Open Command Prompt and change to the folder containing the extracted executable. If you use a different folder, the command must point to that location.
- Run
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00916453. - Copy the complete output into your notes along with the original screenshot and message. Preserve punctuation and any symbolic name exactly as displayed.
The tool may return a symbolic name or explanatory message. Treat that result as a lead to the component named in the output, not as permission to apply an unrelated repair. Check that the returned value corresponds to the code you copied; a successful command against a mistyped number can still produce a result for the wrong value.

When ERR returns no definition
If the command returns no symbolic name or message for 0x00916453, do not invent a meaning from the digits. An empty lookup is evidence that the value is not covered by the tool’s database; it is not evidence that Windows is damaged, that a driver is missing, or that the computer is infected. Keep the no-result output and continue with source-specific escalation.
When the output differs from the dialog
If ERR identifies a different code than the one in your screenshot, re-copy the original value and check for a missing digit, an extra leading zero, or a letter-number substitution. If the application shows one value while its log records another, retain both: the vendor may use an internal code that is translated only inside that application.

Device Manager has its own numbered problem-code system. Microsoft’s documented examples include Code 10 (the device failed to start), Code 28 (a driver is not installed), and Code 43 (the device reported problems). Microsoft’s technical reference does not map 0x00916453 to one of those conditions.
Read the actual Device status
- Open Device Manager.
- Double-click the device that shows the warning.
- Open the Properties window and read the Device status area.
- Record the device name, the manufacturer or model shown, and the numbered problem code and text.
- Use the documented resolution for that numbered code. Include the original hexadecimal value only as additional context if it appeared elsewhere.
If Device Manager shows Code 10, 28, 43, or another numbered status, that number is the actionable Device Manager diagnosis. Do not download a driver package merely because an unidentified hexadecimal value appeared in a separate message. A driver change should be tied to the named device and the documented problem code.
If the Device status area contains no problem code and the hexadecimal value appeared in another application, leave Device Manager out of the repair path. Opening it cannot decode an application-owned value.

If an application or game displays the code
Application dialogs often use private status values that Microsoft’s general lookup utility cannot decode. Start with the application name and the exact operation that failed: launch, sign-in, installation, update, save, or another action. Record the application version if the dialog or its About screen provides one, and preserve any local log entry associated with the same time.
Use the application vendor’s documented support channel with the complete message, screenshot, Windows edition and build, and ERR output. Ask whether 0x00916453 is an application-specific code and whether a particular release, configuration, or component is required. A vendor can distinguish its internal value from a Windows status code; a generic registry or driver utility cannot make that distinction reliably.
If the application names a device, service, or file in the same message, include that name verbatim in the support request. Do not remove or rename files, edit the registry, or replace system components solely because the number looks unfamiliar. Those changes can destroy evidence and may create a second problem unrelated to the original dialog.
If the code appears during installation or updating
Installer failures are tied to the product and the exact stage at which the package stopped. Record the product and package name, whether the operation was an install, update, repair, or removal, and the full text shown by the installer. Note whether the value appears before or after a restart and whether a retry produces the same message.
Send that information to the software or hardware vendor that supplied the package. Include the Error Lookup output, but make clear whether ERR returned a defined message or no result. The vendor needs to know both facts: a defined Windows status may identify a system condition, while a no-result value may be entirely private to the installer.

Avoid downloading a replacement installer or driver from an unverified site just to make the hexadecimal value disappear. The source of the package and the vendor’s documented compatibility requirements are more relevant than a generic claim that a utility can “repair” any code.
If the value is in Event Viewer or another log
An event record provides more context than a cropped dialog. Save the complete entry, including the log name, provider or source, event ID, level, timestamp, and description. If the record includes an application, device, service, or file name, copy it exactly. Keep adjacent records from the same minute when they clarify what happened first.
Correlate the event with the action that preceded it, such as starting a program, connecting a device, or applying an update. This does not assign a meaning to 0x00916453; it gives the responsible vendor enough context to identify its own code. If ERR provides no definition and the provider is not a Microsoft component, the provider or product vendor is the appropriate interpreter.
What not to do with an unidentified hexadecimal code
- Do not assume the value proves malware, data loss, or a failing hard drive.
- Do not run random registry cleaners or delete registry entries suggested by an unrelated website.
- Do not install a driver package that does not name the affected device and match the vendor’s documented release.
- Do not substitute a Device Manager numbered code for
0x00916453, or treat an application code as a Windows-wide diagnosis. - Do not claim that a missing ERR result is a successful diagnosis. It only tells you that the utility did not decode that value.
- Do not discard the original screenshot, log, or timestamp after a restart; those details are often needed for escalation.
These precautions are reversible and evidence-preserving. They avoid turning an unknown value into a second, self-inflicted configuration problem.

Escalate when the source is identified but the code remains undefined, when the same failure recurs, or when the affected application or device is essential. Provide one organized package rather than a number copied without context.

- A screenshot or exact transcription of the complete message.
- The confirmed code, including capitalization and the
0xprefix. - Application, installer, device, or event-log source.
- Windows edition and build, plus the date and time of the failure.
- The action that triggered the message and whether it can be reproduced.
- The output from
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00916453, stating clearly if it returned no symbolic name or message. - For hardware, the Device Manager device name and its numbered Device status code.
Send the package to the vendor responsible for the named application, installer, or device. If the evidence points to a Windows component and the vendor cannot interpret it, provide the same package to Microsoft Support. The complete surrounding message is more valuable than a speculative explanation of the digits.
Windows 11 and Windows 10: what changes?
The absence of a verified Microsoft mapping applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10 in this case. The Error Lookup command and the need to confirm the message source do not change merely because the edition differs. Record the exact edition and build because a vendor may support one release or component version and not another.
Device Manager remains the relevant place to inspect a hardware status message on either system: open the device’s Properties and read Device status. The numbered code shown there—not an unrelated 0x00916453 value—is what determines the documented Device Manager resolution.

- Verify. Re-copy the full code and surrounding text; check every digit and letter.
- Classify. Decide whether the source is Device Manager, an application, an installer, or an event log.
- Decode. Run Microsoft’s Error Lookup Tool with
Err_6.4.5.exe 0x00916453and preserve the output. - Apply the matching path. For Device Manager, use the numbered Device status code; for other sources, use the responsible vendor’s support documentation and evidence process.
- Escalate responsibly. If no definition exists, submit the complete message, system context, screenshot, and lookup output rather than guessing at a repair.
