If it appears in a browser page or pop-up that demands a phone call, payment, credentials, or remote access, treat it as a likely technical-support scam or fake security warning—not as proof that Windows has identified a particular component or virus.
Microsoft’s guidance is explicit: “Genuine Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.” Close the alert safely, scan the computer, remove anything the scammer asked you to install, and secure your accounts if you shared information.

What error 0x009598CF actually means
No authoritative source assigns 0x009598CF to a Windows component, stop code, driver, or named malware family. That means the code alone cannot tell you which file or setting to repair. Do not search for a component diagnosis based only on the hexadecimal string or download a “fix” offered by an alert displaying it.

The context matters. A web page, browser notification, or full-screen browser window can imitate Windows branding and place an invented code beside a warning. Microsoft’s Hicurdismos example demonstrates how malicious software can display a fake Windows error and a support number. Genuine Windows error screens provide an error code and directions for searching or troubleshooting; they do not direct you to call a number shown on the screen.

How to tell a fake 0x009598CF warning from a genuine Windows message

A phone-number demand is the decisive warning sign. Do not test the number “just to check”; use Windows Security and Microsoft’s official support and reporting channels instead.
Remove the warning safely
1. Do not call, click, pay, or grant access
Do not call the supplied number, click buttons such as Allow, Renew, Remove virus, or Talk to support, install software at the caller’s direction, or type passwords and payment details into the page. Do not give a caller remote access. A real Microsoft error will not require any of those actions.
2. Close the page without interacting with it
Try the browser tab’s close button or close the browser window. Do not click an on-page button that claims to close the warning; the page can use that button to open another download or notification prompt.

If the browser is trapped in a full-screen loop or repeatedly reopens the warning, end the browser process from Windows:
- Press Ctrl+Shift+Esc to open Task Manager. If the compact view appears, choose More details.
- On the Processes list, select the browser that displayed the alert.
- Choose End task. This closes the browser without requiring you to use the page’s controls.
- Restart Windows before reopening the browser. Save any work in other applications first.
A browser page can be persistent because of a tab, a notification permission, or an extension; ending the process removes the active page but does not by itself remove every cause.
3. Update Microsoft Defender and run a full scan
Use the built-in Microsoft Defender Antivirus rather than a scanner advertised by the pop-up.

- Open Windows Security from the Start menu.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Open Protection updates and choose Check for updates so Defender has the latest security intelligence.
- Return to Virus & threat protection, select Scan options, choose Full scan, and start the scan.
- Allow the scan to finish and follow Windows Security’s instructions for any item it identifies.
A full scan checks the files and running areas covered by Microsoft Defender. If the unwanted behavior continues, use Microsoft Defender Offline from the same Scan options screen. Save open work first; an Offline scan runs outside the normal Windows session so persistent unwanted software has less opportunity to hide.
4. Remove software installed during the incident
Think back to every action suggested by the warning or caller. If you installed a remote-access program, “security tool,” browser extension, or other application at that person’s request, remove it after the scan.
- Open Settings and choose Apps.
- Open Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows 10 builds).
- Sort by installation date and look for software you do not recognize or did not intend to install.
- Select the application’s menu, choose Uninstall, and complete the uninstaller.
- Restart Windows, then run another Defender scan if the application was granted elevated access or the symptoms remain.
Do not remove a program solely because its name looks unfamiliar if it is a Windows component or hardware utility you can identify. When uncertain, check the publisher and installation date and use Microsoft’s official support guidance rather than a removal tool offered by the alert.

5. Revoke suspicious browser notifications and site permissions
Many fake alerts return because a site was allowed to send browser notifications. Open your browser’s Settings, find Site permissions or Cookies and site permissions, then open Notifications. Remove or block domains you do not recognize, especially the domain that displayed the warning. Also review permissions for pop-ups, redirects, and automatic downloads, and reset permissions for a suspicious site.
Menu names differ between browser versions. The important action is to remove the unfamiliar site from the allowed-notifications list rather than clicking the notification itself. Review extensions or add-ons at the same time and disable or uninstall ones you did not deliberately add.
6. Update Windows, the browser, and applications
Install pending updates through Windows Update, then update the browser and applications that were open when the warning appeared. Updates close vulnerabilities that scammers and unwanted software can use. In Microsoft Edge, keep Microsoft Defender SmartScreen enabled. SmartScreen evaluates sites and downloads and can help block phishing pages, malware, deceptive advertisements, and technical-support scams.

If the alert keeps returning after a scan
Persistent pop-ups usually mean that something remains outside the single browser tab. Work through these checks in order:
- Confirm that the browser’s allowed-notifications list no longer contains the offending domain.
- Remove unfamiliar extensions and applications installed around the time the alert began.
- Run Microsoft Defender Offline after the full scan if the behavior continues.
- Install all available Windows and browser updates.
- Check whether the alert appears only in one browser. If it does, reset that browser’s suspicious site permissions and review its extensions.
- If it appears across browsers or on the Windows desktop, treat it as a broader unwanted-software problem and use Microsoft’s official support channel for further diagnosis.
The hexadecimal text itself does not identify which of these conditions is present. Use the observed behavior—browser-only, notification-based, or system-wide—to choose the next check.
If you already called or gave the scammer access
Act as though the information and device may have been exposed. Microsoft recommends the following recovery sequence:

- Run a full Microsoft Defender scan, followed by Microsoft Defender Offline if unwanted behavior remains.
- From a clean device, change passwords for email, Microsoft, gaming, social, and financial accounts that may have been disclosed. Do not reuse the old passwords.
- Review sign-in activity and security notifications for unfamiliar devices, locations, password changes, or newly added recovery methods.
- Contact your bank, card issuer, or payment provider immediately if you paid, shared card details, or provided online-banking information. Ask what account or card protections are available.
- Report the incident through Microsoft’s official scam-reporting channel and preserve relevant phone numbers, messages, receipts, and software names for the report.
Changing passwords from a device the caller controlled can expose the new credentials, so use another trusted device whenever possible. Continue monitoring accounts after the initial password change because an attacker may have added a new sign-in method.
What not to do
- Do not call a number printed in a Windows-style warning.
- Do not pay to “unlock” the computer or to remove the displayed code.
- Do not install a remote-control utility because a caller says it is required for Microsoft support.
- Do not provide passwords, one-time codes, bank details, or screenshots of sensitive information.
- Do not assume that the presence of a hexadecimal code proves a virus or a damaged Windows component.
- Do not download a repair program from the alert itself.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
