- Complete text: copy every sentence, not just the hexadecimal code, and note whether a second error number appears.
- Trigger: record whether it appeared while downloading an update, installing an update, activating Windows, signing in, resetting the PC, upgrading Windows, or installing another program.

Fix 0x0098AA4B when it appears in Windows Update
Run the Windows 11 troubleshooter
- Open Get Help from the Start menu.
- Search for the automated Windows Update troubleshooter and start it.
- Allow the diagnostic checks to run and apply any offered repair.
- Restart Windows, open Settings > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Microsoft describes this troubleshooter as a way to diagnose and attempt to fix update errors. If it reports a specific problem, record that result before continuing; it may be more useful than the undocumented hexadecimal value.
Run the Windows 10 troubleshooter
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot.
- Select Additional troubleshooters.
- Choose Windows Update, then select Run the troubleshooter.
- Apply the suggested repair, restart the computer, and check for updates again.
Make sure the computer remains connected to reliable power and an unrestricted network while Windows Update retries. If the troubleshooter cannot correct the failure, continue with the documented reset sequence below rather than repeatedly clicking Check for updates.

Reset Windows Update components from an elevated Command Prompt
The following sequence renames two update working folders so Windows can create clean replacements. It requires an administrator Command Prompt. Microsoft cautions that advanced troubleshooting requires administrator permissions and is intended for people comfortable with command-line work.
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt. - Enter each command separately, pressing Enter after each line:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
ren %systemroot%softwaredistribution softwaredistribution.bak
ren %systemroot%system32catroot2 catroot2.bak
net start bits
net start wuauservThe two net stop commands should report that the services stopped, and the final two commands should start them again. If a service is already stopped, that message is not by itself a failure. If a rename says the folder is in use, close Settings and other update-related windows, restart, open an elevated Command Prompt again, and repeat the sequence. Do not delete the folders while troubleshooting; renaming keeps the previous folders available for recovery.
Check the system volume
In the same elevated Command Prompt, run:
chkdsk /f C:If Windows says the volume is in use and asks to schedule the check for the next restart, type Y, press Enter, and restart. Allow the check to finish. Interrupting a scheduled disk check can leave the original problem unresolved, so keep the computer connected to power.

Repair the Windows component store and system files
After the disk check completes, open an elevated Command Prompt again and run the image repair command:

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /RestorehealthWait for the operation to reach completion. It can appear to pause for an extended period; closing the window early prevents the repair from finishing. Then run System File Checker:
sfc /scannowRestart when SFC finishes, return to Settings > Windows Update, and try the update once more. If DISM or SFC reports that it could not repair files, save the exact result. Do not claim that 0x0098AA4B has been fixed merely because the commands completed; confirm by repeating the original update action.
Fix the code when it appears during Windows activation
Open the Activation troubleshooter in Windows 11
- Open Settings > System > Activation.
- Expand the activation status information if necessary and select Troubleshoot.
- Follow the prompts and note any activation code or account instruction that the troubleshooter displays.
Open the Activation troubleshooter in Windows 10
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Activation.
- Select Troubleshoot and complete the checks.
- Record the listed activation code and the final result, then restart if Windows requests it.
Microsoft advises checking the activation code shown by the troubleshooter. If 0x0098AA4B is not listed, or the troubleshooter cannot resolve the activation state, contact Microsoft support. Have the product-key or digital-license information that legitimately belongs to the installation available, but do not publish it in a screenshot or support forum.

Remove nonessential hardware
Shut down the computer and unplug devices that are not required for setup: printers, scanners, USB storage, external disks, card readers, and similar accessories. Undock a laptop if it is connected to a docking station. Leave only the display, keyboard, mouse, network connection, and any device required to boot. Reconnect accessories one at a time after the upgrade succeeds so a problematic device can be identified without repeating the entire installation.

Check for security-software interference
Third-party antivirus or endpoint-security software can interfere with an upgrade or installer. Review the product’s documented compatibility instructions and use its supported temporary-disabling or removal procedure only if necessary. Do not leave protection disabled longer than required, and restore it immediately after setup. If your organization manages the computer, ask its administrator before changing security settings.
Use Microsoft’s installation tools
For Windows 11, Microsoft provides an Installation Assistant and installation-media tools on its Windows 11 download page. Choose the tool that matches your situation, verify that the computer meets the stated requirements, and back up important files before starting. Installation media is useful when the in-place process repeatedly fails, but it does not make 0x0098AA4B a documented setup code. Read every prompt carefully so you do not select a clean installation when you intended to preserve applications and files.
If setup fails again, photograph the complete message and preserve the time of failure. Setup logs and Event Viewer entries around that time can reveal a more specific component or driver, while the hexadecimal value by itself cannot.

- Record the application or Settings page that displayed the message.
- Check whether the same operation works in another local administrator account, if that test is appropriate for the application and does not expose private data.
- Restart once and retry the exact operation, noting whether the wording or code changes.
- Review Event Viewer for errors at the recorded time and save the event source, event ID, and general description.
- Use the application vendor’s support process or Microsoft support, depending on which component produced the dialog.
