Is it a virus?
The characters 0x009FEB41 are not proof of malware. A legitimate program can display an undocumented or vendor-specific hexadecimal status value, and a malicious program can display almost any text. Capture the exact error before changing Windows

0x009FEB41,009FEB41, or another form. - Record the surface. Note whether it appeared on a blue screen, black screen, Windows dialog, installer, browser, game, printer utility, VPN client, or another app. Write down the program name and version if shown.
- Record the trigger. Mark whether it happened during startup, sign-in, shutdown, sleep or wake, Windows Update, driver installation, or launch of a particular program. Note whether it happens once or on every attempt.

Err_6.4.5.exe <error code>- Obtain the Error Lookup Tool build appropriate for your Windows environment from Microsoft documentation.
- Open Command Prompt and change to the folder containing
Err_6.4.5.exe, or supply the executable’s full path. - Run the command with the complete value, for example

The tool displays message text associated with a hexadecimal status code. Microsoft warns that its database is a point-in-time collection; a newer Windows release may require a newer tool build. If the utility returns no match, that does not prove the PC is safe or infected. It means the value is outside that build’s tables, may be vendor-specific, or may not be a standard system code.
When the lookup returns a different code
Use the code that Windows or the originating program actually reported, not a shortened or reformatted version. If the message includes a named module, driver, or application, investigate that component’s documentation and log before attempting general repairs. Do not substitute a familiar error number merely because it looks similar.
Do not confuse 0x009FEB41 with 0x0000009F
Microsoft documents 0x0000009F as DRIVER_POWER_STATE_FAILURE. It indicates an inconsistent or invalid driver power state, such as a timed-out power transition, a blocked power IRP, or a driver that did not complete a power request. That documented bug check is not the same value as 0x009FEB41.

Windows 11 and Windows 10 steps for a recurring stop error
If the code appears during a system crash, restart, shutdown, sleep, or wake operation and you cannot yet identify an application, Microsoft’s baseline sequence applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. These are symptom-level recovery steps, not a confirmed fix for this undocumented string.
1. Remove recently added hardware
Power the computer down normally if possible. Disconnect a recently installed USB device, dock, external drive, expansion card, or other hardware, then test the same operation again. Keep a note of what you removed and reconnect one item at a time only after stability returns. If the failure stops, the device, its cable, its firmware, or its driver becomes the lead to investigate; the result does not prove which of those four is responsible.
2. Start Windows in Safe Mode
Safe Mode loads a minimal set of drivers and services, which helps distinguish a third-party startup component from a failure that occurs in the basic Windows environment.

- In Windows 11, open Settings > System > Recovery. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Recovery.
- Under Advanced startup, select Restart now. You can also hold Shift while choosing Restart from the Start menu’s power controls.
- At the recovery screen choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Settings > Restart.
- After the restart, press 4 or F4 for Safe Mode, or 5 or F5 for Safe Mode with Networking when network access is necessary.
Reproduce the trigger carefully. If the error occurs only in normal mode, record which startup program, service, or non-Microsoft driver was loaded after you leave Safe Mode. Avoid uninstalling several items at once, because that destroys the evidence needed to identify the change.

3. Check Device Manager
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand categories related to the event, such as display adapters, network adapters, storage controllers, Bluetooth, USB, audio, or printers.
- Look for a yellow warning icon or a device that appeared immediately after the problem began.
- Open the device’s Properties and read the General tab’s status. Record the device name and driver-provider information before changing anything.
- Use Update driver, Disable device, or Uninstall device only when the device matches the timing and symptoms. Restart and test one change at a time.
For a driver installation that introduced the problem, use the device’s Properties > Driver > Roll Back Driver button when available. If the button is unavailable, obtain a compatible driver from the device or computer manufacturer rather than installing a random package.
4. Ensure adequate free disk space
Windows needs working space for updates, paging, temporary files, and crash data. Open Settings > System > Storage in Windows 11 or Settings > System > Storage in Windows 10, and remove or move files only after confirming that you have a backup. Do not delete unfamiliar system folders manually. If the crash dump cannot be written because the system volume is full, later analysis may be impossible.
5. Install current Windows updates
- Windows 11: open Settings > Windows Update.
- Windows 10: open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart as requested.
- Test the original trigger again and record the update date if the behavior changes.
Updates can alter drivers and system components, so a change in behavior after updating is useful evidence even when it does not solve the error.

6. Use System Restore or another recovery option
If the issue began after a driver, application, or system change, open the Windows recovery environment and choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore when a restore point exists. Select a point dated before the failure and review the affected programs shown by the wizard. If System Restore is unavailable or does not help, use another recovery option offered by Windows and your organization’s backup policy. Back up personal files before any reset or reinstall operation.

When the code appears in a named application
An error dialog inside a game, launcher, installer, printer utility, VPN client, or other program should be treated as an application-status problem first. The Windows baseline steps above are appropriate only if the same event also crashes or restarts Windows.
Inspect the application’s own logs
Open the program’s settings or installation folder and look for a log, crash-report, or diagnostics option. Record the exact timestamp, executable name, module name, and any text surrounding 0x009FEB41. Check the vendor’s support instructions for that exact application and version. Do not replace a DLL or download a “missing DLL” from an unofficial site based only on the hexadecimal string.
Check Event Viewer
- Press Win+R, enter
eventvwr.msc, and press Enter. - Open Windows Logs > Application for an application crash or Windows Logs > System for a device, service, startup, shutdown, or power event.
- Use Filter Current Log to narrow the time range around the failure.
- Open the event that matches the timestamp and save the full details, including Faulting application name, Faulting module name, event ID, and exception or status value.
One event rarely proves causation. Compare several occurrences and look for a component that appears consistently. Preserve the exported event before clearing logs or reinstalling software.
Use Reliability Monitor for a timeline
Press Win+R, enter perfmon /rel, and press Enter. Reliability Monitor displays application failures, Windows failures, updates, and driver installations by date. Select the red failure marker nearest the error and open View technical details. This timeline can reveal that the first occurrence followed a specific update or installation, but it does not by itself identify whether that change caused the code.

If Windows will not boot normally
Force Windows into its recovery environment only after normal restart attempts fail. Windows may enter recovery automatically after repeated unsuccessful starts; you can also use installation or recovery media that matches the installed edition. From Troubleshoot > Advanced options, use the least destructive option that addresses the evidence you collected, such as Safe Mode, System Restore, or another offered startup recovery tool. If the machine is encrypted, have the BitLocker recovery key available before changing boot or recovery settings. Protect personal files before reinstalling or resetting Windows.
When recovery succeeds, do not immediately reinstall every removed driver or reconnect every peripheral. Reproduce the original trigger with one change at a time, keeping a dated record. That method identifies the component that makes the status string recur instead of merely hiding it.
