Error 0x080004005 is ambiguous. In the documented Microsoft .NET incident, the page title showed 0x080004005, but the actual parser message contained 0x80004005 while reading C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319configmachine.config. A separate WLAN AutoConfig report used the same-looking string for a networking failure. The correct fix depends on the full message, executable, file path and Windows component named in the dialog. Capture those details first, then follow the matching procedure below.

What error 0x080004005 means

There is no single canonical Microsoft definition for the exact string 0x080004005 in the incidents documented for this guide. The extra zero after 0x may be a transcription or formatting mistake for 0x80004005, commonly displayed as “Unspecified error.” Treating the number as a diagnosis can send you to the wrong subsystem.

What the dialog names Documented context Start with
Update.exe or a configuration parser After cloning an SSD, .NET reported an error parsing machine.config. Back up and restore the .NET configuration file from its default copy.
WLAN AutoConfig A TP-Link TL-WN821N and a corrupted network profile produced the message on one MSI B550-A PRO system; the report also showed Windows error 1206. Check the adapter, network profile, driver and motherboard BIOS. Do not alter .NET files.
Microsoft Store, Chrome or another application The same-looking text can be associated with unrelated application settings or entries. Repair or reset the named app, install pending Windows updates and use that app’s support instructions.

The wording, executable and path are more useful than the digits alone. Before changing anything, record the complete dialog, Windows edition and build, and what changed immediately beforehand.

Capture the exact failure before changing Windows

  1. Copy the complete message. Include the title, the executable (for example, Update.exe), any file path and whether the number is 0x080004005 or 0x80004005.
  2. Record the trigger. Note whether the problem began after cloning or restoring a drive, installing an application, changing a Wi-Fi adapter, updating Windows, or changing firmware.
  3. Identify the component. A reference to machine.config indicates .NET. “WLAN AutoConfig,” a wireless adapter name or error 1206 indicates networking. “Store,” “Chrome” or another program points to that application’s repair path.
  4. Back up before file or firmware work. Create a restore point or a current system backup. Copy any configuration file you plan to rename to a separate folder so the original can be restored.

If the message disappears too quickly, open Event Viewer and check Windows Logs and Application or System at the time of the failure. The event details can reveal the process and file that the short dialog omits.

Fix the .NET configuration-parser case

Use this branch only when the dialog names machine.config, .NET Framework, a configuration parser, or an executable such as Update.exe that fails while reading the .NET configuration path. The Microsoft Q&A incident from 2025 followed an SSD clone and identified this file:

C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319configmachine.config

The following procedure is forum guidance, not a guarantee. Work from an administrator account and preserve the original file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

1. Back up the existing file

  1. Open File Explorer and paste C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319config into the address bar.
  2. If Windows asks for administrator approval, select Continue. If the folder or file is absent, stop this branch; a different .NET version or a different component may be involved.
  3. Copy machine.config to a safe location such as a dated folder on another drive. Do not overwrite that backup while testing.

2. Replace the damaged configuration with the default copy

  1. In the same config folder, right-click machine.config, choose Rename, and change it to machine.config.old. If Windows reports that the file is in use, close the program named in the error and restart Windows before trying again.
  2. Right-click machine.config.default and choose Copy. In an empty area of the folder, choose Paste.
  3. Rename the new copy from its generated name (often “machine.config.default – Copy”) to exactly machine.config. Keep the .config extension; enable View > Show > File name extensions if necessary.
  4. Restart Windows. Test the application that originally displayed the parser error.

Renaming rather than deleting leaves a rollback file. If another program depended on custom entries in the old configuration, those settings may need to be recreated by the application’s documentation or installer.

3. Run Microsoft’s .NET Framework Repair Tool

After the restart, run the official Microsoft .NET Framework Repair Tool from Microsoft’s download and support page. Accept its diagnostic and repair actions, and restart again if the tool requests it. The tool is appropriate when the default file did not resolve the parser error or when other .NET components appear damaged.

4. Check file permissions

The Microsoft Q&A guidance also says to verify that SYSTEM and Administrators have appropriate control of machine.config. To inspect them, right-click the file, select Properties > Security, and review the listed accounts and permissions. Do not grant broad “Everyone” or full-control access merely to suppress the error. If permissions were changed by a cloning utility, restore them using the permissions inherited from the surrounding .NET config folder or consult Microsoft support rather than guessing.

5. Check the cloning process if the error returns

The incident appeared after an SSD clone. If the parser error returns on a cloned installation, verify that the source disk was healthy and that the cloning software completed without skipped or unreadable files. Microsoft Q&A guidance also suggests considering Sysprep before cloning Windows again so the generalized image does not carry machine-specific state. A clean Windows installation is a last-resort alternative when repair and a corrected cloning process do not produce a stable system; back up personal files and application data first.

Understanding the replacement and its limitations

machine.config is a system-level .NET Framework configuration file, so replacing it can remove custom settings that an application or administrator intentionally added. That is why the old file should be renamed rather than deleted and copied to a separate backup location. If the replacement fixes the parser error but a program later loses a connection string, provider, or other custom behavior, compare the old file with the new one and use the affected program’s documentation to restore only known entries. Do not merge random XML from the internet.

The default file is a useful local baseline, not proof that every .NET installation uses the same contents. If machine.config.default is missing, the path belongs to another Framework version, or the file itself cannot be read, stop and use Microsoft’s repair utility or support channels. Downloading a replacement configuration file from an unverified site can introduce malformed XML or unsafe settings.

After a successful restart, test the exact action that failed, not just whether Windows boots. Run the affected updater or application, watch for the original parser message, and check Event Viewer for a new configuration error. If several programs fail, that pattern makes a damaged .NET installation more plausible than an isolated application setting and strengthens the case for the official repair tool.

Fix the WLAN AutoConfig or Wi-Fi case

Do not replace machine.config when the message names WLAN AutoConfig or a wireless adapter. A separate Super User report from 2022 described “Windows could not start the WLAN-AutoConfig service on Local Computer. Error 0x080004005: Unspecified error,” together with Windows error 1206 for a corrupted network connection profile. The hardware was a TP-Link TL-WN821N on an MSI B550-A PRO motherboard. The accepted answer says a BIOS update fixed that particular system, but it supplies no manufacturer documentation proving a general board defect. Treat the result as anecdotal and hardware-specific.

1. Confirm the service and adapter

  1. Press Win+R, enter services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Locate WLAN AutoConfig. Open its properties, check the current status and set Startup type to the setting recommended by your Windows installation. Start the service and note any new error text.
  3. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters. Record the exact wireless adapter name and whether it has a warning icon.

2. Check the network profile

Error 1206 in the cited report indicated a corrupted network connection profile. In Settings > Network & internet > Wi-Fi > Manage known networks, remove the affected saved network and connect again, entering its password when prompted. This discards the saved profile, not the router’s configuration. If several profiles are affected, document them first so you can reconnect deliberately.

3. Update or reinstall the wireless driver

Use the PC, motherboard or adapter manufacturer’s support instructions to obtain the driver intended for your exact Windows version and hardware revision. In Device Manager, you can uninstall the problematic adapter device and then use Action > Scan for hardware changes to let Windows detect it again; follow the manufacturer’s directions if a separate installer is required. Do not install a driver intended for a different adapter model.

4. Consider a BIOS update carefully

The MSI B550-A PRO report says a BIOS update restored WLAN AutoConfig on that machine. BIOS updates are model-specific and carry a risk if interrupted. Read the motherboard manufacturer’s current instructions, confirm the exact board revision, use stable power, and do not shut down while firmware is being written. If your computer is not the same model or the symptom is different, the report does not establish that a BIOS update will help.

5. Retest with a controlled connection

After changing one item, restart Windows and test WLAN AutoConfig with the same adapter. If possible, test a second known-good Wi-Fi adapter or a wired connection. A result that changes with the adapter points toward driver or hardware troubleshooting; a result that follows the Windows installation points toward the operating system or profile.

Fix a Microsoft Store, Chrome or other application error

When the dialog names an application rather than .NET or WLAN AutoConfig, use the application’s repair path. The number alone does not identify a universal Windows repair.

Repair or reset the named app

  1. Open Settings > Apps > Installed apps (called Apps & features on some Windows versions).
  2. Find the application, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options when available.
  3. Choose Repair first. This attempts to correct the installation without removing the app’s data.
  4. If the error remains, return to the same page and choose Reset, understanding that app data and sign-in state may be removed.
  5. Restart Windows and test the app before making another change.

For a browser or a program without Repair and Reset controls, use its own uninstall and reinstall procedure and preserve bookmarks, profiles or saved projects first. Follow the vendor’s support documentation for settings that are specific to that application.

Install pending Windows updates

Open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, install applicable updates and restart. Record the Windows build before and after updating. If the failure began immediately after a particular update, use Microsoft’s documented recovery options rather than deleting system files at random.

Costs and third-party repair utilities

Outbyte’s 2025 catalog page markets a downloadable “Outbyte PC Repair application” and lists Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 compatibility, a 21.2 MB download and full-version registration starting at USD 29.95. Its page instructs readers to install and launch the program, select Scan Now and then Repair All. Those are vendor claims, not evidence that the utility is an official Microsoft fix or that it will resolve this particular error.

Use the free, reversible checks first: identify the component, back up files, restore machine.config only for a .NET parser message, use Microsoft’s .NET Framework Repair Tool, and follow the adapter or application manufacturer’s instructions. If you evaluate a commercial utility, read its current price, subscription and refund terms, scan what it proposes to change, and create a backup first. Why copying the code alone leads to wrong fixes

The .NET and WLAN reports involve different services, files and triggers while sharing an almost identical hexadecimal string. A parser error points to a text configuration file; WLAN AutoConfig depends on the networking service, adapter driver, saved profile and sometimes firmware. An application-specific message may be caused by that app’s installation or settings. The same digits therefore cannot tell you which file, driver or service to change.

Option Component and trigger Reversibility Evidence level
Restore machine.config .NET parser error after a clone or damaged configuration High when machine.config.old is retained Microsoft Q&A guidance, 2025
Repair .NET Continuing .NET errors after restoring the file Usually reversible through Windows repair and restore procedures Microsoft-supported repair utility
Profile, driver and BIOS checks WLAN AutoConfig, adapter or error 1206 Varies; back up profiles and follow manufacturer instructions Community report, with BIOS result limited to one system
Repair or reset the app Store, Chrome or another named application Repair is less disruptive; Reset may remove app data Component-specific Windows procedure

What not to do

  • Do not treat 0x080004005 as proof of malware or a single Windows defect.
  • Do not delete machine.config without keeping a backup and a rollback copy.
  • Do not replace .NET files for a WLAN AutoConfig failure.
  • Do not flash a BIOS intended for another motherboard model or revision.
  • Do not download an unofficial replacement configuration file from a random website.
  • Do not assume a community report on one MSI B550-A PRO system applies to every computer.

If the error still appears

Reproduce the failure once, then collect the full dialog, executable, path, Windows edition and build, recent changes, Event Viewer details, and the exact steps already attempted. For .NET, include whether the original file was cloned, renamed and replaced, whether the repair tool completed, and what permissions are shown. For WLAN, include the adapter model, motherboard model, driver version, profile error and BIOS version. Give that information to Microsoft support, the PC or motherboard manufacturer, or the application’s vendor. A clean installation should be considered only after backups and supported repair paths have been exhausted.

Optional shortcut

As an optional shortcut after the manual checks, Outbyte PC Repair can address more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements and invalid redirects, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy and vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredder and app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7; a free trial lasts at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no utility repairs every crash.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is 0x080004005 the same as 0x80004005?

Not necessarily. A 2025 Microsoft Q&A page used 0x080004005 in its title, while the parser text displayed 0x80004005. A separate 2022 WLAN report used the longer-looking string. Copy the complete message and identify the executable and component before choosing a fix.

Which file is involved in the documented .NET error?

The message identified C:WindowsMicrosoft.NETFrameworkv4.0.30319configmachine.config. That path matters: do not replace a file there unless the dialog actually names .NET or a configuration parser. If the path is absent, another Framework version or another component may be involved.

Is it safe to delete machine.config?

Do not delete it as a first step. Back it up, rename it to machine.config.old, copy machine.config.default and rename the copy to machine.config. Keeping the old file provides a rollback if an application relied on custom settings.

Can a BIOS update fix this code?

A Super User report says a BIOS update restored WLAN AutoConfig on one MSI B550-A PRO system with a TP-Link TL-WN821N. That is an anecdotal, hardware-specific result, not proof that BIOS updating fixes every occurrence. Confirm your exact model and revision and follow the manufacturer’s firmware procedure.

What if machine.config.default is missing?

Stop the manual replacement procedure. Do not download a random copy. Run Microsoft’s official .NET Framework Repair Tool and consult Microsoft support, especially if the folder belongs to a different .NET version or permissions prevent access.

Will app Reset erase my data?

It may remove app data and sign-in state. Use Repair first because it is less disruptive, back up profiles or projects, and reset only when the application still fails and its support instructions permit that step.

Should I pay for Outbyte PC Repair?

It is an optional third-party utility, not an official Microsoft fix. Its 2025 page lists Windows 11/10/8/7 support, a 21.2 MB download and full-version registration starting at USD 29.95. Try free Microsoft and manufacturer-supported steps first and review current terms before buying.

What should I send to support if nothing works?

Provide the full dialog, exact code spelling, executable, file path, Windows edition and build, trigger, Event Viewer details and every step attempted. Add the old and new .NET file status and permissions for parser errors, or the adapter, driver, motherboard and BIOS details for WLAN failures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Start with the component, not the number. If the message names .NET machine.config, back up the file, replace it with machine.config.default, run Microsoft’s repair tool and check permissions. If it names WLAN AutoConfig, investigate the profile, adapter, driver and manufacturer BIOS guidance instead. For Store, Chrome or another app, repair or reset that app. Keep backups, change one thing at a time and treat third-party utilities and isolated community fixes as optional, not universal cures.
