Error 0x80070057 means “The parameter is incorrect.” The code is context-dependent, so the right repair depends on whether it appears during Windows Update, an upgrade, installation, backup, a Store operation, disk work, or another application. First verify the exact code: 0x80070057 has one zero after the x, while 0x800070057 contains an extra zero.
What error 0x80070057 means
Microsoft defines 0x80070057 as ERROR_INVALID_PARAMETER, displayed as “The parameter is incorrect.” Windows or an application received an argument, setting, file, or operation it could not accept. That description does not identify one universal fault.

The same code can be produced by Windows Update, Windows Setup, a feature upgrade, backup and restore, Microsoft Store activity, disk or partition operations, or a particular application. A cache reset that helps Windows Update is not an appropriate response to a failed backup or partition change. Identify the operation first.

- Copy the error exactly from the dialog, Settings page, or setup screen. Check that it is
0x80070057, not the commonly mistyped0x800070057. - Record what Windows was doing when it appeared: downloading an update, installing an update, upgrading Windows, installing from USB, restoring a backup, changing a disk, using the Store, or running a specific program.
- Note whether the message appears every time or only with one update, device, file, or application.
- Do not apply registry edits, backup instructions, partition commands, or data-deletion steps until the triggering operation is known.

Fix 0x80070057 during Windows Update
1. Run the built-in Windows Update troubleshooter
On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, select Windows Update, and choose Run the troubleshooter. Depending on the Windows 10 build, Microsoft may direct you to the Windows Update troubleshooter in the Get Help app instead. Follow the diagnostic prompts, allow it to apply recommended repairs, restart if requested, and try Windows Update again.

Microsoft associates this error with damaged files, permission problems, and incorrect system configuration. The troubleshooter is the least invasive first step because it checks the update path without requiring you to delete folders manually.
2. Repair protected system files with SFC
Open an elevated Command Prompt by typing Command Prompt into Start, right-clicking it, and choosing Run as administrator. Approve the User Account Control prompt, then enter:
sfc /scannow
Leave the window open until verification reaches 100 percent. Restart Windows even if SFC reports that it repaired files, then run Windows Update again. If SFC says it could not fix some files, continue with the component-store repair below rather than repeatedly running the same command.

A corrupted update download or catalog can repeatedly produce the same parameter error. In an elevated Command Prompt, stop the services that use the update data:
net stop bits
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptsvc
Rename the working folders so Windows can create fresh copies. Renaming preserves the old folders until you confirm that updates work:
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDataStore DataStore.bak
ren %systemroot%SoftwareDistributionDownload Download.bak
ren %systemroot%System32catroot2 catroot2.bak
If a .bak name already exists, use another clear suffix such as .bak2. If a folder cannot be renamed, check that the services stopped successfully and that Command Prompt is elevated; do not delete unrelated folders.
Start the services again:
net start bits
net start wuauserv
net start cryptsvc
Restart Windows, open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Windows Update rebuilds the renamed working data. The first scan can take longer because its local cache is new.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems4. Repair the Windows component store with DISM
If Windows Update still fails, use the same elevated Command Prompt to run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth
DISM normally obtains repair files through Microsoft Update. Allow the command to finish; interrupting it can leave the repair incomplete. When DISM completes, run SFC again:
sfc /scannow
Restart and retry Windows Update. If DISM reports that the repair source is unavailable, Microsoft documents using a matching Windows installation source. The source must correspond to the installed Windows edition and architecture; using an arbitrary image can fail or repair the wrong component set.

5. Retry with a clean update state
After the troubleshooter, file checks, cache reset, or DISM repair, restart before testing again. Check one update cycle at a time so you can tell whether the repair changed the result. If one particular update continues to fail while other updates install, record its identifier and use Microsoft’s update-specific guidance rather than repeating cache resets indefinitely.
Fix 0x80070057 during a Windows upgrade or installation
Disconnect unnecessary peripherals
Shut down and unplug external storage, docks, printers, secondary displays, USB hubs, and other devices that are not required for setup. Leave only the keyboard, mouse, display, network connection, and installation media needed to complete the upgrade. Reconnect devices after Windows starts successfully. A peripheral driver or setup component can pass an invalid parameter even when Windows itself is healthy.
Check third-party software and drivers
Temporarily investigate third-party security software, system utilities, and drivers that load during startup. An incompatible driver or background program can interfere with Setup. Use a Windows clean boot to start with Microsoft services and minimal startup programs, then retry the upgrade. Restore normal startup after testing; a clean boot is a diagnostic state, not a permanent configuration.
Do not remove security software or drivers blindly. Record what you disable, obtain the vendor’s current removal or update instructions, and restore protection as soon as the test is complete.
Check storage and installation media
Ensure the system drive has enough free space for the upgrade and that the installation source is readable. Microsoft notes that a device with a small hard drive may need a USB drive for an update or recovery process. A Windows 10 installation or recovery USB is installation media, not a guaranteed cure for this code; use it to repair or reinstall only after protecting personal files and confirming the edition and architecture match the device.
Use Microsoft’s upgrade and installation guidance
Setup failures have different causes from Windows Update download failures. Follow Microsoft’s upgrade and installation error guide for the exact stage and message shown. Avoid registry changes or deleting setup-related data that the guide does not request. If the process reaches a rollback screen, record the displayed code and the point at which it failed before trying another attempt.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. If the error appears in backup, the Store, disk work, or an application
The code alone cannot identify the repair. Ask these questions before changing anything:
- Was a backup being created, restored, or scheduled?
- Was Microsoft Store downloading or updating an app?
- Was a disk being formatted, partitioned, resized, or checked?
- Did one application display the message while opening a file or changing a setting?
- Does the same operation work with another file, disk, account, or location?
For backup and disk operations, stop before retrying if the action could overwrite data. Confirm the destination, source, permissions, and available space in the product’s own documentation. For a Store or application failure, use that product’s repair, reset, update, or reinstall instructions and preserve app data where possible. Do not assume Windows Update cache commands address these unrelated contexts.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Correcting the wrong code: the title’s
0x800070057spelling has an extra zero. Verify the on-screen value. - Running commands without elevation: SFC, DISM, and service-reset commands need an administrator Command Prompt.
- Deleting instead of renaming: renaming the documented update folders gives Windows a clean cache while retaining a rollback copy.
- Stopping services and never restarting them: start BITS, Windows Update, and Cryptographic Services again, then reboot.
- Mixing contexts: a Windows Update repair is not a backup, partition, Store, or application repair.
- Repeating failed upgrades unchanged: remove unnecessary peripherals and test for driver or background-software interference first.
- Ignoring support status: Windows 10’s free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, and security fixes ended on October 14, 2025, according to Microsoft. An update failure in 2026 may therefore involve an unsupported operating system, even after local corruption is repaired.
When to stop troubleshooting
Stop and protect your data if the error occurs during partitioning, formatting, backup restoration, or any operation that could overwrite a disk. Seek qualified assistance when the device cannot boot, DISM and SFC repeatedly fail, setup rolls back after every attempt, or the message names a disk that is disappearing. Keep the exact code, the operation that triggered it, and the result of each command; that information is more useful than trying unrelated fixes.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut after the manual steps, Outbyte PC Repair can check and repair some common Windows issues, clean temporary and cache files, review settings and vulnerabilities, and provide an app-crash log on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. A free trial is available by category for at least two days, followed by a paid subscription.
