The correct fix depends on what you were doing when it appeared: installing a Windows update, playing a video, opening Windows Video Editor, installing an app, repairing system files, or viewing a file on a legacy network share. Capture that context first, then follow only the matching path below. Do not apply every fix indiscriminately.
What error 0x80070057 means
Windows uses 0x80070057 for several unrelated failures. Microsoft associates it with Windows Update installation errors, media-player and codec problems, application failures, and a narrow effective-access problem involving some non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 servers. The text may say “The parameter is incorrect,” but that wording does not identify which parameter or component failed.

Because the same hexadecimal code can come from different components, a registry cleaner, a codec reinstall, or a Windows Update reset is not a universal answer. Start by recording the exact operation and application that produced the message.
Record the trigger before changing anything
- Was Windows installing an update?
- Were you playing a file in Windows Media Player or another player?
- Were you opening or editing a project in Windows Video Editor?
- Were you installing or launching a Microsoft Store app?
- Did the message appear while Windows was repairing itself or starting?
- Were you viewing effective access to a file on a network share?
Note the application name, the file extension, whether other videos open, and whether the same operation fails after a restart. Those details determine which steps are low-risk and which ones can remove caches or app settings.

Fix 0x80070057 during Windows Update
Use this sequence when the code appears beside “Update failed to install.” Microsoft groups 0x80070057 with update failures that can involve corrupted files, permissions, or an incorrect system configuration.
1. Restart and run the Windows Update troubleshooter
- Save open work and restart Windows.
- Open Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Apply any recommended correction, restart if requested, and try the update again.
The troubleshooter is preferable to deleting update data because it can identify a configuration or permission issue without removing the local update cache.
2. Check system files with SFC
- Open Start, type
Command Prompt, right-click it, and choose Run as administrator. - Enter
sfc /scannowand press Enter. - Allow the scan to reach 100 percent. Do not close the window while it is running.
- Restart Windows and retry Windows Update.
System File Checker can repair protected Windows files that are damaged or missing. A result saying that no integrity violations were found does not rule out an update-cache or permission problem; it only means SFC did not find a repairable problem in the files it checked.
3. Reset the Windows Update cache
Use this step only if restarting, the troubleshooter, and SFC did not help. Deleting cache contents is different from deleting personal documents, but it removes locally stored update files that may need to be downloaded again. Back up important work before making system changes.
- Press
Windows key + R, typeservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Windows Update, right-click it, and select Stop.
- Open File Explorer and go to
C:WindowsSoftwareDistribution. - Delete the contents of that folder. If Windows says a file is in use, confirm that the Windows Update service is stopped and try again; do not delete unrelated folders.
- Return to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Restart the computer and check for updates again.
If permissions prevent the service from stopping or the folder from being cleared, stop rather than forcing ownership changes. An administrator or managed-workplace policy may control the service.

4. Use DISM when Windows components themselves appear damaged
When SFC reports corruption it cannot repair, or several Windows features fail at once, run the Deployment Image Servicing and Management tool from an elevated Command Prompt:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthAfter DISM completes, run sfc /scannow again, restart, and retry Windows Update. DISM and SFC are built-in repair tools for corrupted Windows components; neither is a guaranteed fix for every instance of 0x80070057.
Fix 0x80070057 when a video will not play
For playback errors, Microsoft identifies two broad possibilities: a problem with the media file itself or with Windows Media Player, including an audio or video codec problem. Work from the least destructive checks toward app maintenance.
1. Verify the file and format
- Check the extension and confirm that the player supports that type. Microsoft lists MP3, WAV, WMA, AVI, and WMV among commonly supported Windows Media Player formats.
- Try a second file in the same player. If only one file fails, the issue may be specific to that media file rather than Windows as a whole.
- Try the failing file in another installed player only as a diagnostic comparison. A successful test does not prove that the original player is damaged; it shows that the file can be read by at least one decoder.
- Install pending Windows updates, then restart. Updates can include media components and device-driver fixes.
Do not assume that every unfamiliar extension needs a random codec pack. Codec packages from untrusted sources can add unwanted software and may not address an app-library problem.
2. Restore the Media Player library and clear its cache
Microsoft recommends restoring the media library and clearing the player’s cache when playback errors persist. The exact menu names can vary by Windows Media Player version, so use the library-maintenance or media-library reset command exposed by your installed version. Clearing a library cache does not delete the original video files, but it can remove locally stored catalog information and require the library to be rebuilt.

Before deleting cache data, note custom library locations and back up irreplaceable recordings. If the player cannot rebuild the library afterward, add the folders again through its library settings.
3. Repair or reset the affected player app
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find the affected media-player app, select its three-dot menu, and choose Advanced options.
- Select Repair and test the video.
- If Repair is unavailable or ineffective, select Reset, then test again.
Repair is the safer choice because it is designed to correct the app without clearing all of its stored state. Reset can remove preferences, sign-ins, or library configuration, so record those settings first.
4. Check device drivers if playback is unstable
Graphics and audio drivers can affect playback, especially when the failure occurs across multiple files or after a Windows change. Install drivers through Windows’ normal update mechanisms or the hardware maker’s official support channel. If the problem is limited to one file and another player works, a driver change is less likely to be the first answer.
Fix 0x80070057 in Windows Video Editor
Windows Video Editor is a separate app path from Windows Media Player. A Microsoft Q&A response to a May 2026 report of a video-opening failure recommends repairing the app first. That response is a case-specific recommendation, not a universal diagnosis for every Video Editor error.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Video Editor, open its menu, and select Advanced options.
- Select Repair.
- Open Video Editor and try the project or source video again.
- If the error remains, return to the same page and select Reset.
Reset can remove Video Editor preferences and app data. Write down project locations, preferred settings, and any unsaved work before using it. Keep original videos in their existing folders until the project opens successfully; moving or renaming source files can create a separate path error.

Repair another Windows app that shows the code
If 0x80070057 appears while launching or installing a Microsoft Store app rather than during playback, use Microsoft’s general app-repair path instead of changing video codecs or Windows Update caches.
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Select the affected app’s menu and choose Advanced options.
- Choose Repair and test the app.
- If Repair is unavailable or does not work, choose Reset.
Reset may remove the app’s settings and locally stored data. If the app contains projects or downloads, confirm where those files are stored before resetting. Reinstalling should be considered only after Repair and Reset fail and after you have verified that important app data is backed up.

System-file repair is appropriate when the error is accompanied by failures in several unrelated Windows features, repeated component errors, or an SFC result indicating corruption. It is not a targeted treatment for a single unsupported video format.
SFC first
From an elevated Command Prompt, run:
sfc /scannowWait for completion, read the result, and restart. If Windows reports that it repaired files, retry the original operation. If it reports that some files could not be repaired, continue with DISM.
DISM, then SFC again
Run:
DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealthWhen DISM finishes, run sfc /scannow a second time and restart. These tools scan for corrupted files and restore missing or damaged Windows components, but a successful scan does not establish that system corruption caused your particular 0x80070057 event.

Understand the legacy network-share case
A separate Microsoft article documents 0x80070057 while viewing a user’s effective access to a file on a non-Microsoft SMB 3.0 server through a UNC path. Microsoft attributes that specific behavior to a NULL Owner field in the returned security descriptor.
This is not the normal explanation for a Windows Update or video-playback message. If the error appears only when checking permissions on a legacy network share, map the share to a drive letter and repeat the operation. The same Microsoft guidance points to an update for Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2, so the workaround and update information are version-specific rather than general advice for current video errors.
Safety checks before destructive steps
- Back up important videos, project files, and app data before clearing caches, resetting an app, reinstalling software, or attempting recovery operations.
- Use the exact application and operation that generated the code to choose a path.
- Prefer restart, built-in troubleshooters, and Repair before deleting caches or resetting settings.
- Do not treat 0x80070057 as proof of registry damage, a failing hard drive, malware, or a codec fault.
- Do not run every path in sequence. An Update cache reset will not make an unsupported video format playable, and a codec change will not repair a damaged Windows Update component.
If the error remains
Repeat the original operation after each major change and record what changed. The most useful escalation notes are the exact app, file type, Windows edition, whether other files work, the result of SFC or DISM, and whether Repair or Reset changed the behavior. If only one video fails, preserve the original and test a copy; if every app fails after a system change, focus on Windows component repair; if only a network-share permission check fails, use the legacy SMB path instead of media troubleshooting.
The practical verdict is contextual: Windows Update failures call for the Update troubleshooter, SFC, and possibly an Update cache reset; playback failures call for format and codec checks plus Media Player maintenance; Video Editor failures call for that app’s Advanced options; and suspected system corruption calls for DISM and SFC. None of these steps is a guaranteed fix for every use of 0x80070057.
