Error 0x80070422 usually means that the Windows Update service is disabled or stopped. On Windows 7, the first repair is to enable that service in services.msc, start it, restart the computer, and check for updates again. If the service will not start or the code returns, reset Windows Update components using Microsoft’s guidance and record the exact follow-up error. Also check whether the computer is still eligible for updates: Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020, and its final Extended Security Updates (ESU) year ended on January 11, 2023.

What error 0x80070422 means

Microsoft describes 0x80070422 as “Windows Update service is disabled or stopped.” Microsoft Learn classifies the underlying condition as ERROR_SERVICE_DISABLED. In practical terms, Windows Update cannot perform its work because the service is not running or cannot start with its current configuration.

The code normally appears when you open Windows Update and select Check for updates, but the same service problem can surface during an update installation or an upgrade attempt. The number does not, by itself, prove that a particular update package is damaged, that the computer has malware, or that a hardware component has failed. It identifies a service-state problem first.

Windows 7 is no longer a generally supported operating system. Microsoft ended normal Windows 7 support on January 14, 2020. The last Windows 7 ESU year ended on January 11, 2023, and ESU was limited to eligible editions and licensing programs. Microsoft says updates released after January 14, 2020 applied only to devices covered by ESU. Consequently, repairing the service can restore the update mechanism, but it cannot make an ineligible Windows 7 installation receive current Microsoft updates.

Check these conditions before changing anything

  • Use an administrator account. Changing a Windows service requires administrative rights. If the computer belongs to an organization, a policy may prevent you from changing the setting.
  • Write down the complete message. If starting the service produces another code or sentence, record it exactly. That follow-up message determines the next branch of troubleshooting.
  • Decide whether updates are expected. If the installation is not covered by ESU, Windows 7 will not receive post-January-14-2020 updates even after the service is repaired.
  • Back up important files. Before resetting update components or migrating from Windows 7, copy personal documents and any application data you cannot replace. Keep the backup disconnected while you make system changes.
  • Avoid unofficial fix packages. Do not download an executable, registry file, or “one-click” script merely because its name contains 0x80070422. Use Microsoft’s documented instructions and the built-in Services console instead.

Primary fix: enable and start Windows Update

This is Microsoft’s documented Windows 7 sequence. Perform every step in order; changing the startup type without starting the service leaves the current session stopped.

  1. Sign in as an administrator. If you are unsure, ask the person who manages the PC to provide an administrator account or perform the change.
  2. Open the Services console. Press Win+R, type services.msc, and press Enter. Approve the User Account Control prompt if Windows displays one.
  3. Locate Windows Update. In the list of services, find Windows Update. Double-click it to open its Properties window. Do not substitute a similarly named third-party updater.
  4. Set the startup type. In the General tab, open Startup type and select Automatic. This tells Windows to start the service as part of normal system operation rather than leaving it disabled.
  5. Start the service if necessary. Look at Service status. If it says Stopped, click Start. Wait for the status to change. If it is already running, leave it running and continue.
  6. Save the change. Click Apply, then OK. If Start is unavailable, or Windows reports an error, stop here and record that exact message instead of repeatedly clicking the button.
  7. Restart Windows 7. Use the normal restart command. A restart confirms whether the startup setting persists and reloads the update components in a clean session.
  8. Check for updates again. Open Control Panel, choose System and Security, then Windows Update, and select Check for updates. Allow the check to finish before deciding whether the repair worked.

What a successful repair looks like

  • The Windows Update service remains set to Automatic after the restart.
  • Its status in Services is Running, or Windows starts it when the update check begins.
  • The Windows Update window proceeds to a normal check instead of immediately returning 0x80070422.

A successful service start does not guarantee that Windows 7 has an update available. On an installation without ESU, the service may work correctly while no post-support updates are offered. Judge this first repair by whether the service starts and the original disabled-service error disappears, not by the existence of a new update.

If Windows Update will not start

When the Start button fails, Windows usually supplies a second error. Capture its wording and number before changing other services or editing the registry. Microsoft’s cited guidance does not establish one universal secondary cause for every Windows 7 system. A service that immediately disables itself can be affected by a local policy, security software, or system corruption, but those possibilities require different checks.

Check whether a setting is being reversed

Close and reopen services.msc after the failed start attempt. Verify whether Startup type changed back from Automatic or whether the status returned to Stopped. If it did, a policy or another program may be writing the old value back. On a managed computer, contact the administrator before overriding the setting. If security software is installed, review its Windows-service or system-protection events rather than disabling protection indiscriminately.

Use Microsoft’s Windows Update component-reset guidance

Microsoft’s upgrade-error guidance recommends enabling Windows Update, starting it manually, and resetting Windows Update components when the service problem persists. Follow that official component-reset procedure for Windows 7 exactly as written for your edition. The procedure is intended to rebuild update-related state; it is not a license bypass and it does not extend Windows 7 support.

Do not improvise by deleting arbitrary folders, changing permissions throughout the registry, or importing a registry file from an unknown site. If the official reset procedure reports an additional error, preserve that message and use it to choose the next support path. A reset that completes but is followed by the same 0x80070422 code means the service configuration is still being blocked or reverted, or the installation has deeper corruption.

When system corruption is suspected

If Windows reports that a required service cannot be started, note whether other built-in services also fail. Multiple unrelated failures point away from a single Windows Update setting and toward broader system corruption or policy control. At that point, keep the exact messages, stop making speculative registry edits, and use Microsoft’s Windows 7 repair documentation or qualified technical support. The error number alone is not enough to select a safe registry change.

Choose the next action by the result

Result What it tells you Next action Effect on support status
Windows Update starts after setting the service to Automatic The immediate problem was a disabled or stopped service. Restart once, run a fresh Windows Update check, and install only updates Microsoft still offers for that installation and edition. Does not change Windows 7’s end-of-support status.
The service starts but 0x80070422 returns after reboot The setting is not persisting or another component is disabling the service. Record the state after reboot, check for policy or security-software interference, and use Microsoft’s component-reset guidance. Still depends on ESU eligibility.
The service refuses to start and displays another error A secondary configuration, policy, or corruption issue needs diagnosis. Capture the exact message before changing additional services or the registry; then follow the matching Microsoft guidance. Repairing the service cannot restore unsupported update delivery.
The service works, but the computer is not ESU-covered The update mechanism is functioning, but the operating system is outside Microsoft’s post-support update program. Back up data and plan migration to a supported Windows release. Migration is the durable way to regain a supported update path.

Understand Windows 7’s support dates before spending time on updates

January 14, 2020: normal support ended

Microsoft’s lifecycle guidance states that Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020. Unsupported Windows versions no longer receive regular software updates, security updates, or technical support. Fixing 0x80070422 is therefore a service repair, not a promise that new patches will become available.

January 11, 2023: the final ESU year ended

Microsoft’s Windows 7 lifecycle table lists January 11, 2023 as the end of the final ESU year. ESU was restricted to eligible editions and licensing programs. Microsoft’s FAQ explains that updates after January 14, 2020 applied only to devices covered by ESU. A home installation that was never enrolled cannot gain ESU coverage by changing the Windows Update service.

How to apply this to your computer

  1. Repair the service using the Services procedure above.
  2. After restarting, check whether Windows Update now opens and completes a check.
  3. Determine whether that particular Windows 7 edition and license were covered by ESU during the relevant period.
  4. If it was not covered, treat the repaired service as confirmation of the local fix, then prioritize migration rather than repeatedly resetting Windows Update.

Migration is the durable option for an unsupported installation

When a Windows 7 computer is not ESU-covered, Microsoft recommends upgrading unsupported Windows devices. Before migrating, make a verified backup of personal files and application data, confirm that essential programs and peripherals support the target Windows release, and keep installation media or recovery information available. If the computer is used for games or other software tied to the old installation, preserve save files, activation details, and installers separately from the system backup.

Do not erase the old installation until the backup has been opened and checked on another device or storage location. If the hardware cannot run a supported Windows release, a qualified repair professional can help evaluate replacement or migration options. Continuing to operate an unsupported system may be unavoidable temporarily, but it should be treated as a transition state rather than a security plan.

Common mistakes that make 0x80070422 harder to fix

Changing the wrong service

Windows contains many services with similar names. The documented target is Windows Update. Changing unrelated services can create new startup failures without addressing the original error.

Choosing Manual instead of Automatic

The primary Windows 7 instructions call for Automatic. A service that is left disabled or configured in a way that prevents normal startup can produce the same error on the next update attempt.

Skipping the restart

The restart is part of Microsoft’s sequence. It tests whether the setting survives a new session and ensures that Windows Update is loaded again before you check for updates.

Repeating the same Start command without recording the error

If the service will not start, the follow-up code is more useful than another attempt. Write it down, including punctuation and capitalization, and use it to select the next documented procedure.

Assuming a working service means current security

On Windows 7, service repair and support eligibility are separate questions. A running service cannot provide updates that Microsoft no longer publishes for an installation outside ESU.

Using unofficial registry files or fix executables

These downloads can change more than the Windows Update setting and may make later diagnosis harder. Microsoft specifically provides service and component-reset instructions; use those rather than an unverified script.

A concise decision checklist

  • Is the code exactly 0x80070422?
  • Did you open services.msc with administrator rights?
  • Is Windows Update set to Automatic?
  • Did you click Start when the status was Stopped?
  • Did you click Apply, choose OK, restart, and run a fresh Windows Update check?
  • If starting failed, did you preserve the exact follow-up error?
  • Did you use Microsoft’s component-reset guidance instead of an unofficial executable or registry file?
  • Was this Windows 7 installation covered by ESU, or is migration to a supported release now the appropriate outcome?

For this error, the immediate manual repair is straightforward: enable and start Windows Update, save the setting, restart, and check again. The longer-term answer depends on support eligibility. If the service remains unreliable or the machine is outside ESU, protect the data and move to a supported operating system instead of treating repeated resets as a permanent solution.
