Error 0xE0000102 does not have one confirmed Windows 10 or Windows 11 meaning. The operation that triggered it—Windows Update, an installer, a driver, an application, or another task—determines the right repair. Start by recording that context, then restart, install pending updates, back up your files, and use Windows recovery tools in order from least to most disruptive. Do not delete a DLL or edit the registry merely because its name appears in an old forum post.
What error 0xE0000102 means
Current Microsoft documentation does not define 0xE0000102 as one universal Windows 10 or Windows 11 condition. The same hexadecimal code can appear in different workflows, so a fix that is sensible for an update prerequisite may be wrong for a game installer, a device driver, or one damaged application.

Possible triggers include incorrectly configured settings, invalid or corrupt system entries, a failed installation or uninstallation, an improper shutdown, an interrupted update, and missing or damaged system files. Those are possibilities, not a diagnosis. The full message, the program or service that displayed it, and any nearby code or log path are more useful than the number by itself.
First identify where the code appears
Windows Update or a restart after servicing
If the message appears while checking for updates, installing an update, or restarting after one, treat it first as an update or servicing problem. Note the update name or percentage at which it fails and whether Windows rolls back changes.

An installer or uninstaller
If one setup program displays the code, record its product name, version, install location, and whether the failure occurs during installation or removal. Do not assume the whole operating system is damaged when only one package fails.
A device or driver operation
A code shown while connecting hardware or installing a driver requires the device name, its connection type, and the exact driver operation. Keep the device attached only if the instructions for that device require it.
An application or game
When the code appears after launching one application, capture the application name and any crash or installer log location. A problem limited to one program can often be repaired without resetting Windows.

Another operation
For an unknown context, take a screenshot and copy the complete text before closing the dialog. Also record the date, the last successful operation, and whether the computer shut down or lost power immediately beforehand.
Safe troubleshooting sequence
1. Restart normally and retry once
Save work, close open applications, choose Start > Power > Restart, and wait for Windows to finish booting. Retry the exact operation that produced the code. An interrupted task or improper shutdown can leave a pending operation incomplete, so a clean restart is the least disruptive first test.

If Windows is stuck and a normal restart is impossible, hold the physical power button only as a last resort. Repeated forced shutdowns can create additional file-system or update problems.
2. Install pending Windows updates
On Windows 11, open Settings > Windows Update, select Check for updates, and install all offered updates. Restart when prompted, return to the same page, and check again until no restart is requested. On Windows 10, use Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and follow the same process.

Retry the original task only after servicing has completed. Do not remove files from system folders to force an update past an error you have not identified.
3. Run the Windows Update troubleshooter when the failure is update-related
For Windows 11, go to Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters, find Windows Update, and select Run. In Windows 10, open Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters, choose Windows Update, and run the troubleshooter. Apply only the changes it reports, restart, and test the update again.
If the code came from an installer, a game, or a device rather than Windows Update, this troubleshooter is unlikely to address the underlying operation. Use the context-specific repair instead of repeatedly running unrelated troubleshooters.

4. Check the original program or device
For an application installer, obtain the installer again from the publisher that supplied it and confirm that the package matches your Windows architecture and edition. If the error occurs during uninstall, use Settings > Apps > Installed apps (Windows 11) or Settings > Apps > Apps & features (Windows 10) and try the program’s built-in uninstall or repair option.

5. Back up important data before recovery changes
Before using System Restore, Reset this PC, or reinstalling Windows, make a separate copy of irreplaceable files. Windows Backup can include Desktop, Documents, Pictures, Videos, and Music folders, along with selected settings through a Microsoft account and OneDrive.
Open the backup settings available on your edition of Windows and verify that the files you need are actually present in the destination. A backup that has not completed or cannot be restored is not protection. If Windows Backup cannot proceed, check that you are signed in to OneDrive, that sufficient OneDrive storage remains, and that OneDrive itself is working; each can block the backup process.
6. Use System Restore before a reset
System Restore rolls back system files, installed drivers, and settings to an earlier restore point without targeting personal files. It is appropriate when the error began after a recent installation, update, or configuration change and a restore point from before that event exists.

Search for Create a restore point, open the System Protection result, select System Restore, and choose a restore point dated before the failure. Review the affected programs list, save open work, and allow the restart to finish. System Restore is reversible only in limited circumstances, so record the selected point and do not interrupt the process.
7. Reset or reinstall only when less disruptive options fail
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows and can remove applications and settings; depending on the option selected, personal files may be kept or removed. Use it only after a verified backup and after confirming that the problem is operating-system-wide rather than limited to one application.
A clean reinstall is more disruptive still. It removes the existing Windows installation and requires you to reinstall applications, restore data, and reconfigure settings. Choose this path when recovery tools cannot repair the installation, the system cannot boot reliably, or authoritative support specifically directs it. Read every keep/remove choice on screen before confirming.
Choose the recovery option with the least risk

Administrative access is normally required for recovery settings, restore operations, resets, and reinstall media. If the computer belongs to an employer or school, policy may hide these controls; contact the administrator rather than bypassing them.
What not to do
- Do not delete a system DLL, rename files in
C:WindowsSystem32, or edit the registry solely because the filename resembles one in an online post. - Do not repeatedly force power-off during an update or reset.
- Do not assume that a code shown by one application proves Windows has a corrupted system file.
- Do not reset or reinstall before confirming that your backup contains the files you need.
The old iacenc.dll workaround is not a Windows 10 or 11 fix
A Microsoft Q&A case from Windows XP documented 0xe0000102 during an Update.exe prerequisite failure. In that legacy case, the accepted workaround removed a zero-byte C:WINDOWSsystem32iacenc.dll and reran the update.

That report applies to Windows XP, not to current Windows 10 or Windows 11 installations. It does not authorize deleting a similarly named file on a modern system. Do not copy the workaround or change the registry unless a version-specific, authoritative procedure for your exact failure tells you to do so.
Collect evidence if the code returns
Record the operation and timing
Write down the exact step that fails, the complete message, the application or update name, whether a restart preceded it, and whether the failure occurs every time. Include your Windows edition and whether the computer is Windows 10 or Windows 11.
Check Windows logs
Open Event Viewer and review entries created at the failure time under the log that matches the operation, such as Windows Update or an application log. For an installer, preserve the installer’s own log path and error text. The surrounding entries can identify a service, package, or device even when 0xE0000102 itself is generic.
Escalate with the complete record
When contacting Microsoft, the application publisher, or a hardware vendor, provide the screenshot, exact operation, timestamps, relevant log entries, recent changes, and the recovery steps already attempted. This prevents support from treating an update failure as an unrelated application crash.
Windows 10 support status and the longer-term decision
Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. That date does not explain 0xE0000102 or replace immediate troubleshooting, but it matters when deciding whether to keep repairing a Windows 10 installation or plan a supported move to Windows 11. Check hardware compatibility, application requirements, backup coverage, and your organization’s update policy before upgrading.

Because 0xE0000102 has no single confirmed Windows 10 or Windows 11 definition, identify the operation first. Restart, update, back up, and use the least-disruptive Windows recovery option before considering Reset or a reinstall; never apply the Windows XP DLL workaround to a modern installation.
