If Windows 8 shows 0x8007045D—“The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error”—the immediate problem is a failed read or write between Windows and a device or piece of media. The code does not identify one specific failed component. The disc, optical drive, USB device, cable, controller, or storage drive could be responsible.
Start by noting exactly what failed, disconnecting nonessential hardware, installing Windows and manufacturer driver updates, and testing with a clean boot. Then check the affected volume with CHKDSK when appropriate. If the error follows one disc, cable, port, or drive after you test known-good alternatives, use the hardware maker’s diagnostics or service process rather than repeatedly retrying the same operation.

What 0x8007045D means in Windows 8
Microsoft defines 0x8007045D as ERROR_IO_DEVICE: “The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.” Input/output (I/O) is the exchange of data between Windows and storage or other hardware. A read can fail when Windows cannot obtain data from a source; a write can fail when it cannot save data to a destination.

This is not a Windows Update-only code. It can appear while upgrading Windows 8 to Windows 8.1, reading or burning a DVD, copying files to a USB flash drive or another disk, running a backup, or accessing installation media. The operation tells you which hardware path to test. A DVD failure needs different checks from a file-copy failure involving an external drive.

The code itself is a diagnostic result, not a component diagnosis. It does not prove that the disc, cable, drive, controller, or operating-system files are defective. Isolate the path before replacing hardware or attempting repairs that could affect data.
Before you troubleshoot: protect your data
- Save important documents, game saves, photos, and other files to a separate known-good location before running repairs on a disk.
- Do not run CHKDSK repair on a volume containing the only copy of valuable data. Microsoft warns that repairing bad sectors can result in data loss.
- Write down the operation, source and destination drive letters, the device connected, and the exact point at which the error appears. This prevents you from testing the wrong volume.
- If a drive is making unusual noises, disappearing, or repeatedly timing out, minimize use and prioritize copying irreplaceable files before diagnostic work.
Identify where the error occurs
Use the symptom to select the shortest safe test. The table is a triage guide; it does not establish which component has failed.
| Where 0x8007045D appears | Hardware path to isolate | First low-risk test | Escalate when |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 upgrade | External peripherals, drivers, background software, and the system volume | Disconnect nonessential devices, update Windows and manufacturer drivers, then retry with a clean boot | The upgrade still fails after software and peripheral isolation |
| DVD read or burn | Disc, optical drive, supported burn speed, and drive firmware | Try a new or different disc and a slower burn speed | Several known-good discs fail in the same drive |
| Copy to or from USB or another external drive | Device, cable, USB port, enclosure, and destination volume | Use a different cable or port and test a known-good device | The error follows one device or cable across ports |
| Backup or internal-disk access | Source or destination volume, storage controller, and cabling | Back up data, identify the drive letter, and check the affected volume | Manufacturer diagnostics report a hardware fault or the error follows the drive |
How to fix 0x8007045D during the Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade
1. Disconnect nonessential hardware
Shut down the upgrade and remove printers, scanners, cameras, USB flash drives, external hard drives, docking stations, and other peripherals. Leave only the keyboard, mouse or other essential input device, display, network connection needed by the upgrade, and the Windows 8 computer itself. Microsoft lists this as a general upgrade troubleshooting step because an installer can encounter a device or driver while it is reading or writing files.

Restart Windows 8 and run the upgrade again. If the error disappears, reconnect devices one at a time after the upgrade completes. The device connected immediately before the failure returns is a useful suspect, but reconnecting one at a time is still a test rather than proof of a defective device.

2. Install important Windows updates
From the Windows 8 Start screen, open PC settings, choose Update and recovery, and select Windows Update. Select Check for updates, install important available updates, and restart whenever Windows requests it. Run the check again after restarting until no further important updates are offered, then retry the upgrade.
Keep the computer connected to reliable power during the update and upgrade process. Do not interrupt a restart that is applying updates.
3. Update hardware drivers from the manufacturer
Obtain current Windows 8-compatible drivers from the computer maker or the maker of the relevant device. Prioritize storage or chipset, USB, optical-drive, and other drivers connected to the operation that failed. Follow the manufacturer’s installation instructions, restart Windows, and test the upgrade again.
A driver update is most useful when the failure is tied to a particular controller or device. It is not a reason to install unrelated driver packages from an unknown source. Keep a record of the previous driver version so you can use the manufacturer’s rollback or restore procedure if a new driver creates a different problem.

4. Test for background-software interference with a clean boot
A clean boot starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and startup programs. Microsoft recommends it as a way to identify software conflicts, and notes that non-Microsoft antivirus software or outdated software can interfere with upgrades.
- Sign in with an administrator account.
- Press
Windows key+R, typemsconfig, and pressEnter. - On the Services tab, select Hide all Microsoft services. Then select Disable all.
- Open the Startup tab and select Open Task Manager. Disable each enabled startup item, close Task Manager, and select OK in System Configuration.
- Restart the computer and retry the Windows 8-to-8.1 upgrade.
If the upgrade succeeds in a clean boot, a disabled service or startup program is interfering. Restore normal startup after testing: open msconfig, choose Normal startup on the General tab, re-enable services and startup items in groups, and restart between groups. The item that brings the failure back is the one to update, remove, or discuss with its publisher. Re-enable non-Microsoft antivirus protection when you finish the test.
5. Check the system volume
Use CHKDSK on the volume Windows was reading from or writing to. First complete a backup of important files.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Press
Windows key+X. - Select Command Prompt (Admin) and approve the User Account Control prompt.
- Run
chkdsk C: /fif the affected volume is the usual Windows system volume. ReplaceC:with the actual drive letter if the failed operation used another volume. - If Windows says the volume is in use and asks whether to schedule the check for the next restart, type
Y, pressEnter, and restart. - Allow the check to finish. Do not power off the computer while it is examining or repairing the volume.
The /f option asks CHKDSK to repair logical file-system errors. It does not identify every possible hardware failure. Microsoft specifically cautions that repairing bad sectors can cause data loss, which is why the backup comes first. If CHKDSK reports repeated errors, unreadable areas, or a drive that cannot complete the check, move to the manufacturer’s storage diagnostics and data-recovery plan rather than repeatedly forcing repairs.

DVD read or burn failures
Try different media
When 0x8007045D appears while reading or burning a DVD, the disc may be defective or incompatible with the drive. Try a new blank disc or a different disc brand for a burn, or a different known-good disc for a read. A single failed disc does not establish that the burner is bad.
Use a slower supported burn speed
Select a slower burn speed in the application than the maximum printed or offered for the disc. Microsoft identifies an unsupported burn speed as a possible cause. If the application does not expose a speed setting, consult its help and the burner maker’s instructions rather than selecting an arbitrary value.
Check the optical drive
Test several known-good discs. If every one fails in the same drive, inspect the drive maker’s firmware guidance and hardware diagnostics. Avoid firmware updates unless the model and instructions match exactly; an incorrect firmware package can make the drive unusable. If the same discs work in another compatible drive, the original optical drive or its connection becomes more likely, but replacement should follow the maker’s service procedure and a data backup.
USB, external-drive, and file-copy failures
Change one variable at a time
- Cancel the copy and safely eject the external device.
- Reconnect it directly to a different USB port on the computer, avoiding a hub or docking station for the test.
- If the device has a detachable cable, use another compatible cable.
- Retry with one small, nonessential file before attempting a large transfer.
- If possible, test the same destination with another known-good device, and test the suspect device on another computer.
If the error occurs only through one hub, port, or cable, that part of the path is the practical next suspect. If it follows the external drive to different ports and computers, stop treating the port as the cause and use the drive manufacturer’s diagnostics and service process. Do not format the drive as a first response if it contains the only copy of your files.

Check the volume involved
Open File Explorer, identify the source and destination drive letters, and run CHKDSK only on the volume implicated by the failure. For example, if the external destination is shown as E:, an elevated Command Prompt command is chkdsk E: /f. Back up important data before accepting repairs, and keep the device connected to stable power until the check is complete.
Backups, installation media, and internal-disk access
Backups
Identify whether the failure occurs while reading the source or writing the backup destination. Test the destination with a small file and verify that it has adequate free space and a stable connection. A second external disk or another supported destination can show whether the original backup device is the part of the path failing. If the source drive produces errors in ordinary file access as well as during backup, prioritize copying essential files and then run the storage manufacturer’s diagnostics.
Installation media
If Windows cannot read an installation DVD or another installation source, test the media in another compatible drive and test the drive with different known-good media. For a burned disc, use a new disc and a slower speed. Keep nonessential USB devices disconnected while accessing the installer so that another device is not introducing an I/O conflict.

For an error that appears while Windows accesses an internal volume, record the drive letter and back up data before running chkdsk drive-letter: /f. If the error recurs after a successful check, use the computer or storage manufacturer’s diagnostics. Persistent failures can involve the storage device, controller, or cabling; Windows’ code alone cannot distinguish among them.
How to tell whether hardware is the cause
Use repeatable substitutions rather than guessing:
- One disc fails, others work: replace or avoid the disc.
- Several known-good discs fail in one optical drive: investigate that drive, its firmware, and its connection.
- One cable or port fails, another works: stop using the failing cable or port and check the computer maker’s service guidance.
- One external drive fails on multiple ports or computers: use that drive maker’s diagnostics and recovery process.
- Different devices fail through the same controller or computer: investigate the controller, chipset, system drivers, and internal cabling.
- The upgrade fails only during normal startup: compare a clean-boot result and then identify the software conflict before restoring normal startup.
Replacement is the final step after isolation and backup. Microsoft’s guidance does not name one universal component that causes 0x8007045D, so replacing a drive merely because the code appeared can discard a working part and leave the real cause unresolved.
What not to do
- Do not assume every 0x8007045D message is a Windows Update defect; the same code covers optical media, external devices, backups, and storage access.
- Do not keep retrying a failing disc or drive without testing a known-good alternative.
- Do not skip the backup before CHKDSK repair, especially when the message accompanies unreadable files or repeated disk errors.
- Do not leave Windows in a clean-boot configuration after testing; restore normal startup so required services and startup programs can run.
- Do not install a driver or firmware package that is not intended for the exact computer or device model.
Optional shortcut after the manual checks
Outbyte PC Repair is an optional shortcut for Windows 8 issues: where possible, it addresses more than 100 common problems involving broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL files, and it includes settings adjustments, temporary and cache-file cleanup, privacy tools, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, a file shredder, and an app-crash log. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a free trial is available by category for at least two days before a paid subscription. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it, results vary, and no tool repairs every crash.
Final check
After the device or software change, repeat the original operation with the same source and destination and confirm that the result is usable—for example, open the copied file, verify the backup, or complete the Windows 8-to-8.1 installer. If 0x8007045D returns and follows the same hardware path, stop changing unrelated settings and move to the manufacturer’s diagnostics or service process with your backup secured.
