Error 627 is not one universal problem. The correct fix depends on the product that displayed it. In Microsoft Win32, error 627 (hexadecimal 0x273) means “The range could not be added to the range list because of a conflict.” Swank media players use 627 for a 10-second timeout while requesting a content-encryption key, Veritas NetBackup uses it for an obsolete internal message condition, and a prisma therapy device manual uses it for a faulty remote-data-transmission-station configuration.

Read the exact wording, application name, and whether the code appears as 0x273 before changing anything. The Windows repair commands below are appropriate only when the message is the Win32 error. Swank, NetBackup, and prisma errors require different actions.

Microsoft’s Win32 table is an actively maintained reference. The Windows troubleshooting procedure below was published by Windows Report on January 27, 2025; it is a set of recommendations, not a Microsoft guarantee. The NetBackup reference is from the NetBackup 10.2 documentation published March 31, 2023, and the prisma manual is dated April 2021.

Fix Windows error 627 (0x273)

Apply this section only if the application identifies a Windows or Win32 error and the hexadecimal value is 0x273. The message describes a conflict in a range list, but the visible trigger may be a damaged system component, a recent software change, a permissions problem, or a network-related operation. Work through the steps in order and stop when the original operation works again.

1. Record the exact failure

Before making changes, copy the complete error text, the program that shows it, the file or folder involved, and what you were doing when it appeared. Note whether it happens once, at every startup, only when opening a particular file, or only over a network. This information prevents you from treating a Swank or NetBackup message as a Win32 problem and gives an application vendor something actionable if Windows repairs do not help.

2. Restart Windows and retry

Save your work, close the affected program, choose Start > Power > Restart, and repeat the same operation after Windows loads. A restart clears temporary locks and pending state. If the error returns immediately, continue rather than repeatedly rebooting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

3. Install pending Windows and application updates

  1. Open Settings > Windows Update (in Windows 10, this is under Update & Security > Windows Update).
  2. Select Check for updates, install available updates, and restart when requested.
  3. Open the affected application and use its own Help, About, or update control to install its current release.

Do not interrupt an update or force a shutdown while it is installing. If 627 began immediately after a particular update, record its date; removal should be considered only after the safer repairs below and only when the update is clearly connected.

4. Temporarily test for third-party software conflicts

Security suites, system optimizers, file filters, and similar utilities can intercept file or network operations. Temporarily pause a non-Microsoft security or optimizer component using its documented pause or exit control, then retry the affected operation. Do not browse, download files, or perform other risky tasks while protection is paused, and turn it back on immediately after the test. If the error disappears, update or reconfigure that product instead of leaving protection disabled. If pausing it changes nothing, re-enable it and continue.

5. Check and repair the Windows component store with DISM

DISM must be run from an elevated terminal. Right-click Start, choose Terminal (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin), approve the permission prompt, and run these commands separately:

  1. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth
  2. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth
  3. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

CheckHealth performs a quick check, ScanHealth performs a more extensive scan, and RestoreHealth attempts to repair component-store corruption. The scan can take time and may appear to pause. Wait for a completion message; do not close the window because the percentage has stopped moving temporarily. If RestoreHealth reports that it could not find repair files, make a note of the exact message and proceed to the System File Checker step.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Verify protected system files with SFC

In the same administrator window, run:

sfc /scannow

Allow the verification to reach 100 percent, then read the result. If Windows repaired files, restart and retest the original operation. If SFC says it found no integrity violations, the system files it checked are probably not the cause. If it says some files could not be repaired, run DISM /RestoreHealth again, restart, and run SFC once more before moving on.

7. Check permissions on the affected file or folder

If 627 appears while opening, saving, extracting, or modifying a particular location, verify that your account can use it:

  1. In File Explorer, right-click the file or folder and choose Properties.
  2. Open the Security tab and select your user account.
  3. Confirm that the required permission—usually read, write, or modify—is allowed.
  4. If it is a managed work or school computer, ask the administrator rather than changing ownership or broadening permissions yourself.

Test with a copy in a folder you own, such as a new folder under your user profile. A successful test there points to access control or the original location rather than a damaged Windows installation. Do not grant “Everyone” full control as a quick fix.

8. Reset networking only when the failure is network-related

Use this step when the error occurs while connecting to a shared folder, service, or other network resource. First restart the modem, router, or access point if you control it, and test another connection. For a Windows adapter reset, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset and follow the restart prompt. Windows removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns their settings to defaults, so you may need to reconnect to Wi-Fi or restore VPN and other adapter settings afterward.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If the same resource fails from several computers, the conflict is more likely on the server, service, or network path. Give the administrator the exact error text and time instead of repeatedly resetting your own PC.

9. Remove software or drivers changed when the problem began

Think back to the first appearance of 627. If you installed, updated, or configured a program immediately beforehand, uninstall that specific change from Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Apps & features in Windows 10), then restart and test. Do not remove unrelated programs at random. For a managed machine, ask the administrator before uninstalling security, backup, or business software.

10. Use System Restore for a clearly dated regression

System Restore can return system files, drivers, and configuration to an earlier restore point without intentionally deleting personal documents. Search for Create a restore point, open it, select System Restore, choose a point dated before error 627 began, and review the affected programs before confirming. Save work and close applications first. A restore can remove programs or updates installed after that point, so record anything you may need to reinstall. If no suitable restore point exists, do not create a new one expecting it to undo the past.

11. Escalate with useful evidence

If the error remains, collect the application name and version, Windows edition and build, the complete message, the operation that triggers it, DISM and SFC results, recent changes, and whether the issue occurs on another account or computer. Send that information to the application’s support team or your system administrator. A generic “error 627” report is insufficient because the same number has several unrelated meanings.

Fix Swank “Error Starting Video: Error Code 627”

Swank defines this 627 as a request to its CENC key service timing out after 10 seconds. It is therefore a playback authorization or network-path timeout, not the Windows range-list conflict. Running DISM or SFC will not repair a timed-out key request.

  1. Confirm that the device has a working internet connection by testing another permitted service.
  2. If the player uses Wi-Fi, move it closer to the access point or test a wired connection where available.
  3. Restart the playback device and retry the same title.
  4. If 627 persists, record the player or platform model, application version, network type, title, time of failure, and exact wording.
  5. Give those details to the hotel, venue, school, or other service administrator responsible for the Swank installation.

A connection that works for ordinary websites can still fail to reach a required key service because of captive portals, filtering, DNS policy, firewall rules, or service-side downtime. Only the service administrator can verify those conditions.

Fix Veritas NetBackup status 627

Veritas describes status 627 as “unexpected message received from bpsynth” and states that the code is no longer used. It is a NetBackup infrastructure diagnostic, not a general Windows repair code. Do not apply registry edits, DISM, SFC, or consumer network-reset advice to a backup server solely because the number is 627.

  1. Capture the job ID, master server and media-server names, client name, NetBackup version, and the exact time of the event.
  2. Preserve the relevant NetBackup logs according to your organization’s retention policy.
  3. Submit a problem report to the NetBackup administrator or Veritas support with the appropriate logs and the surrounding job history.

Because the status is documented as no longer used, the surrounding log messages and current product version are more valuable than the number alone.

Fix prisma/WM090TD error 627

The prisma manual dated April 2021 lists 627 as a faulty remote-data-transmission-station configuration and directs the user to a specialist dealer. This is a therapy-device context. Do not edit the registry, replace communication parts, alter clinical settings, or follow generic PC repair instructions. Stop at the device’s normal safe state and contact the supplier or an authorized specialist dealer, providing the device model, error display, and circumstances in which it appeared.

Choose the correct path

  • Windows message with 0x273: use the Windows sequence—restart, update, isolate conflicts, DISM, SFC, permissions, network reset when relevant, rollback, and System Restore.
  • “Error Starting Video” in a Swank player: treat it as a 10-second CENC key-service timeout; check the connection, restart, and contact the service administrator.
  • NetBackup status 627: preserve logs and submit a problem report; the status is no longer used.
  • prisma/WM090TD device: contact an authorized specialist rather than attempting a user repair.

As an optional shortcut for the Windows troubleshooting path, Outbyte PC Repair can check for and fix more than 100 common Windows issues where possible, including broken system elements, invalid redirects, and shared DLL problems, while also offering settings tweaks, temporary-file cleanup, privacy warnings, vulnerability checks, a real-time boost, file shredding, and an app-crash log. It complements antivirus software rather than replacing it; results vary and no tool repairs every crash. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7, with a free trial by category for at least two days before a paid subscription.
